4 held in gang-rape of two minors; BJD seeks stringent action
'We are writing to you with a sense of profound shock, anguish and outrage over the horrific abduction and alleged gang-rape of two minor cousins within the jurisdiction of the Golanthara police station,' the memorandum said.
The BJD leaders, who included the sitting MLAs and former MLAs, urged the SP to expedite the investigation into the Golanthara incident and ensure a clear and strong message is sent that such monstrous acts will not be tolerated.
The BJD also demanded strengthening of intelligence gathering to neutralise criminal elements and prevent such heinous crimes from happening in the future. The memorandum said the BJD will be closely monitoring the progress of the case and will not rest until justice is delivered to the victims and their families.
Among others, Berhampur Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei, former MPs Rajashree Mallick and Chandra Sekhar Sahu and former MLAs Ramesh Chandra Choupatnaik, Bikram Panda and several others were part of the delegation.
Meanwhile, Odisha Police on Saturday arrested four persons on the charge of raping two minor sisters in Ganjam district. The four accused were nabbed while trying to escape from the State, the Berhampur SP said, adding they were booked under different sections of BNS and POCSO Act. He said while the accused youths were in the age group of 21-22 years, the cousins were 13 and 14 years old. The incident took place at a village in Golanthara police station area on June 3 when the sisters were on their way to attend a wedding ceremony.
The incident came to light on June 5 when the mother of one of the survivors reported the matter to the police, who subsequently arrested the four accused in a series of raids.
The SP said that one of the accused was an acquaintance of a girl. He took the two girls to a place, where the four youths allegedly gang-raped them, and later dropped them near their village. Police said the statements of the survivors were recorded. Their medical examinations have been conducted. Both the girls were produced before the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for
counselling.

'Sagar Patil, the Savadatti taluk president of (Hindu right-wing group) Sri Ram Sena, wanted the Muslim headmaster to face serious charges leading to his transfer. To carry out the plan, he enlisted the help of Madar by blackmailing him over his relationship with a person from another community,' Belagavi superintendent of police (SP) Bhimashankar Guled said on Saturday. The three had allegedly purchased pesticide from a shop in Munavalli village on July 18. 'To execute the plan, the accused roped in a student related to Patil and offered him ₹500 and snacks to mix the pesticide into the school's water tank,' SP Guled said. 'To prevent the student from identifying the substance, the pesticide was transferred into a plastic soft drink bottle. After mixing it into the water inside the tank, the boy discarded the bottle nearby,' the SP said, adding that the bottle was a key piece of evidence that helped investigators uncover the crime. Police traced the shopkeeper from whom the pesticide was purchased. 'Based on the shopkeeper's account, the three accused were detained. During interrogation, they confessed to the conspiracy and were arrested,' Guled added. The accused have been booked under Section 123 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are remanded to judicial custody. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday condemned the incident, describing it as a 'heinous act' rooted in communal hatred. 'Religious fundamentalism and communal hatred can lead to heinous acts, and this incident, which could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children, is a testament to that,' Siddaramaiah wrote in a post in Kannada on X. Mistaken for thief, Nepalese woman brutally beaten in UP's Bareilly, 4 held
A Nepalese woman, who had recently come to Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly in search of a job, was allegedly beaten by a mob on suspicion of theft, police said on Sunday. The woman, identified as Sushmita Saru Magar alias Kajal, 30, hailing from the Pokhara district in Nepal, was admitted to the hospital in serious condition, they added. Around 1 am, while speaking over the phone on the terrace, she was spotted by alarmed residents who suspected her to be a burglar and raised an alert. A panicked Sushmita attempted to re-enter the house through the terrace door but failed. Terrified, she jumped off the roof to escape, only to be surrounded and beaten by a mob wielding sticks. A video of the incident that surfaced on social media shows Sushmita pleading, 'I am not a thief,' with folded hands as the mob continued to attack her. The video sparked public outrage and prompted swift police action. Superintendent of police (city), Bareilly, Manush Pareek, confirmed that a case was registered under BNS sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 127(2) (wrongful confinement) at Quila police station based on the viral video and the victim's statement. The police said four individuals—Gaurav Saxena, Shivam Saxena, Aman Saxena, and Arun Saini—all residents of Baradari have been arrested, while efforts are on to apprehend others involved in the incident. 'We are committed to ensuring justice for victims. No one is allowed to take the law into their own hands,' the SP city said. The assault left Sushmita with serious injuries, including two broken teeth and a fractured leg. She is receiving treatment at a local hospital. She informed police that she had previously worked in Noida but lost her job and came to Bareilly through a contact to seek work. The incident follows a pattern of heightened vigilance in Bareilly, where residents have been on edge due to frequent drone sightings at night. These drones, often suspected of being used for theft or smuggling, have led to increased community patrols and suspicion of outsiders, contributing to the mob's overreaction in this case. Last week, a 35-year-old local Anil Kumar was brutally beaten by a group of residents in Bareilly's Subhash Nagar at night. Mistaking him for a drone operator or thief due to his late-night movement, the mob attacked him, leaving him with severe injuries. Police had registered a case against unidentified assailants and further probe into the incident is underway.
