Bangladesh orders fugitive ex-leader Hasina to return to face trial

The Hindu16-06-2025
Bangladesh's war crimes court ordered fugitive ex-leader Sheikh Hasina on Monday (June 16, 2025) to return to face trial on charges amounting to crimes against humanity.
Ms. Hasina (77) fled Dhaka by helicopter to India in August 2024 at the culmination of a student-led mass uprising. She has defied an extradition order to return to Bangladesh.
Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024 when Hasina's government launched a crackdown in a failed bid to cling to power, according to the United Nations.
Ms. Hasina and former senior figures connected to her ousted government and her now-banned party, the Awami League, are being prosecuted in Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
Prosecutors have filed five charges against Hasina, including abetment, incitement, complicity, facilitation, conspiracy and failure to prevent mass murder — charges that amount to crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law.

'The court directed the prosecution team to issue a notice as soon as possible, summoning them to appear before the court,' chief prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam said on Monday (June 16, 2025).
The trial will resume on June 24 without her if she fails to return.
The prosecution argues that Hasina ordered security forces, through directives from the interior ministry and police, to crush the protests. Ms. Hasina is on trial with two other officials.
One of them, former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who faces similar charges, is also a fugitive.
The second, ex-police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, is in custody and was in court on Monday (June 16, 2025).
The prosecution of senior figures from Hasina's government is a key demand of several of the political parties now jostling for power. The interim government has said it will hold elections in April 2026, although some parties are pushing for an earlier vote.

Why Voter List Revision In Bihar Has Put West Bengal, BJP In Focus

The Opposition parties have moved the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission's move to update and revise the voter list in Bihar only months ahead of the polls. While the opposition parties are smelling a conspiracy behind the move, the Election Commission has now asked Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states to prepare for Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Reports indicate that poll officials have discovered Bangladeshi, Nepali, and Myanmar nationals in Bihar during the poll revision. Amid the ongoing tussle and SIR exercise, there has been a concern among the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal as well. While the Election officials say an investigation is underway in the incidents of the finding of foreign nationals in Bihar, the Trinamool Congress has alleged that the SIR move is aimed at disenfranchising lakhs of voters that will ultimately benefit the BJP, the saffron party leaders have claimed that intensive revision, as mandated under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, is necessary for weeding out illegal migrants. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders have voiced concerns that the Election Commission's (EC) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is covertly targeting West Bengal. An Indian Express report notes that leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) see this exercise as potentially pivotal for their party's success. West Bengal's Chief Minister and TMC chairperson, Mamata Banerjee, has accused the EC of acting as a 'stooge of the BJP' by rushing the SIR in Bihar. She has questioned whether this is a clandestine way to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC). For the BJP, West Bengal is a critical state in its quest for national political dominance. Party leaders acknowledge this, also highlighting the state's symbolic importance as the birthplace of the Jana Sangh founder, Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The BJP has long alleged widespread illegal immigration in West Bengal, claiming that the ruling TMC has allowed it to secure more votes. BJP leaders reportedly believe that choosing Bihar as the first state for the SIR was a strategic move, allowing them to work out any issues before a more 'compact' exercise in West Bengal. Since Bihar is an NDA-ruled state, the EC and the Central government can maintain that their motives are entirely 'transparent'. TMC MP Mahua Moitra described the exercise as a tactic to disenfranchise millions of voters. She told The Indian Express that Bihar SIR is a ploy to disenfranchise crores of marginalised voters who will certainly not be able to provide documentation in time. "The BJP is using the EC as its special election machinery, and this exercise will be the absolute burial of an already dying free voting system," she said. In response to the TMC's allegations, BJP MP Raju Bista noted that such a revision of electoral rolls is mandated by the Representation of the People Act, 1950, to ensure their accuracy. Bista alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government is trying to create fear among minorities to hold onto its vote bank.

BJP's Sanjay Jaiswal Hits Back At Tejashwi Yadav Over Sootra Remark, Calls Him ‘Uneducated', Seeks Apology

New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the presence of alleged foreign nationals in Bihar's electoral rolls has escalated into a bitter political clash, with BJP leader Sanjay Jaiswal launching a scathing attack on RJD's Tejashwi Yadav. The issue emerged amid the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which has now become a flashpoint between the ruling and opposition parties in the state. Reacting strongly to Tejashwi Yadav's dismissal of reports about foreign nationals being found on the voter list, Jaiswal accused the RJD leader of being "uneducated and irresponsible." 'Only Tejashwi Yadav can make such comments about media personnel or any human being in general,' Jaiswal told ANI. 'The problem with Tejashwi Yadav is that he is not educated, which is why the people at his home make him memorise whatever they want, and he just repeats it. But if someone asks him a question outside of that, he will create this kind of mess.' Demanding a public apology, Jaiswal further said, 'Tejashwi Yadav should publicly apologise, express regret, and take an oath that he will not say anything beyond what he is taught at home.' #WATCH | Bettiah, Bihar: On the statement of Bihar Legislative Assembly LoP & RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, BJP leader Sanjay Jaiswal says, "...Only Tejashwi Yadav can make such comments about media personnel or any human being in general. The problem with Tejashwi Yadav is that he… — ANI (@ANI) July 13, 2025 The verbal duel intensified after Tejashwi ridiculed reports that Bangladeshi, Nepali, and even Myanmar nationals were listed as voters in Bihar. "Who are these sources?" Tejashwi asked, mocking the authenticity of the claims. 'These are the same sources that said Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore have been captured.' He further added sarcastically, 'Ye sootra ko hum mootra samajhte hai.' … — Tejashwi Yadav (@yadavtejashwi) July 13, 2025 Tejashwi also raised questions about the timing and motivation behind the SIR exercise. 'SIR was conducted for the last time in 2003 under the UPA government. Since then, we have seen many elections, including the ones in 2014, 2019, and 2024. In those elections, we lost by three to four lakhs. Does that mean all these foreigners voted for PM Modi? This means that the NDA are at fault for any dubious elements' names getting added to the voter lists.' Accusing the process of being politically driven, he said, 'That means all the elections they have won have been a fraud... SIR is a complete eyewash. The EC is working as a cell of a political party.' Earlier, a report by news agency IANS quoted Election Commission officials as saying that their field-level teams had identified a 'large number' of suspected foreign nationals, mainly from Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, during the ongoing voter list verification. With Bihar heading into assembly elections later this year, the controversy over the SIR drive and its findings has assumed significant political importance. The process, aimed at cleaning up the electoral rolls, may also influence a broader national conversation on voter roll verification, particularly with an emphasis on individuals' place of birth.
