‘Now you'll dictate to directors which names they should use…': Kerala HC to censor board amid row over ‘Janaki' in film title

The Kerala High Court Monday asked whether the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is dictating the names and stories of the movies now.
On the second day of hearing of the petition of producers of Suresh Gopi-starrer movie 'JSK: Janaki vs State of Kerala', which was denied certificate over the name Janaki, another name for Goddess Sita, the bench of Justice N Nagaresh directed Deputy Solicitor General of India (DSGI) O M Shalina, who appeared for the CBFC, to submit an affidavit on July 2, detailing the reasons for not issuing the screening certificate to the film.
On Monday, the DSGI told the court that film name Janaki refers to the Hindu goddess Sita, and the petitioners can use a neutral name for their film. The CBFC also submitted that the title of the film violates the guidelines issued by the Union Government in conformity with the Section 5B(2) of the Cinematograph Act, which deals with certifying films.
At this stage, the court asked, 'Now you will dictate to directors and artists which names they should use and which stories they should tell. What is wrong with Janaki? How is it contemptuous of a religion? … That is the freedom of artists.''
The court said 80 per cent of the names in India have religious connotations and that the CBFC cannot dictate which name should be given or which story should be told.
Observing that the board has no right to interfere with the story of a film, the court directed the CBFC to give a convincing answer how the name Janaki amounted contemptuous to racial, religious or other groups.
When the petitioner said the film is about the fight of a rape survivor and Janaki is the name of the protagonist, the court wondered, 'Janaki is not a rapist. If a rapist is named as Rama, Krishna, Janaki, then I can understand. The heroine is fighting for justice, what is the problem with that name?''
Rajya Sabha MP and advocate Haris Beeran, who appeared for the producers, said the teaser of the film has been certified by the CBFC. The teaser was released three months back and so far no complaints had emerged related to the title Janaki, he pointed out.
'Has anyone complained about the name Janaki? Whose sentiments are being hurt? Has anyone actually raised an objection?' the judge asked.
Following opposition to the CBFC regional office's first demand for a change in the title of the film, the matter was taken up by the Revising Committee of the board, which also called for the name change. On Friday, while hearing the petition, the court had directed the CBFC to furnish the show cause notice the CBFC had served on the film producers, Cosmos Entertainments.
The case will be taken up again on Wednesday. The Pravin Narayanan-directed film, also starring Anupama Parameswaran in the lead role, reportedly revolves around the legal battle of an assaulted woman named Janaki against the state.

Assam: 132 persons apprehended for alleged illegal cattle slaughter, unauthorised sale of beef

The Assam Police apprehended 132 persons under the state's Cattle Preservation Act on Tuesday for alleged illegal cattle slaughter and unauthorised sale of beef in eateries. A total of 112 eateries were searched during the day and 1,084 kg of meat, which the police suspect is beef, was seized, Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told Scroll. While consumption of beef is not illegal in the state, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans its slaughter and sale in areas predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities or in areas that fall within a 5 km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery), or other religious institutions belonging to Hindu religion or any other institution or area as 'may be prescribed by the competent authority'. It also places tight restrictions on cattle transportation. On Tuesday, a suo-motu drive was initiated in the state to check reported incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and sale of beef in restaurants without authorisation, PTI quoted Kumar as saying. 'The main intention of the drive is to stop violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act,' Kumar told the news agency. In December, public consumption of beef, including at restaurants and community gatherings, was banned by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state. A legislation or legislative amendment to this end has not been passed yet. The crackdown on Tuesday came against the backdrop of more than 150 persons being arrested in Dhubri after animal remains alleged to be of a cow were recovered near a Hindu temple, The Indian Express reported.

‘20 to 30 bullets fired': Utah ISKCON temple targeted in suspected hate crime

The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, renowned globally for hosting the annual Holi Festival, has come under attack in a suspected hate crime, with over two dozen bullets fired at the premises over several days, causing significant structural damage. Bullet mark on a part of the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah.(X/ ISKCON) According to ISKCON, 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple building and surrounding property during night time hours while devotees and guests were inside. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, including to the temple's intricately hand-carved arches. Condemning the attack, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed solidarity with the community and urged swift action. In a post on X, it stated, "We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice." A similar incident had occurred earlier this year when, on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was found desecrated just days ahead of a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, according to temple authorities. The official page of BAPS for the United States shared the details of the March 9 desecration on the social media platform X and emphasised the community's resilience. "In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail," BAPS Public Affairs wrote. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also pointed to the incident on X, linking it to rising anti-Hindu sentiment and noting that the vandalism came shortly before the planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles. "Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close," CoHNA posted, while listing other recent temple attacks since 2022 and calling for an investigation. Last year, acts of vandalism also targeted the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on the night of September 25. That incident followed closely after a similar attack on a BAPS temple in New York. Messages such as "Hindus go back" were found scrawled during those attacks, deeply alarming the local Hindu community. Despite repeated provocations, community leaders continue to affirm their unity and commitment to confronting hate.

Chargesheet against Hindu monk submitted

The Bangladesh Police on Tuesday submitted a chargesheet to the Chittagong court against 38 people, including Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, in connection with the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif. On Nov 26 last year, the court denied bail to Das in a separate sedition case, ordering his detention. Following the hearing, at least 20 people were injured in violent clashes between his supporters and law enforcement personnel near the court premises, during which Saiful was hacked to death. Out of the 38 people named in the chargesheet, 20, including Das, are in custody, while the remaining are absconding. The chargesheet was submitted to the court's prosecution wing.
