Technical glitches in SCADA system being addressed to streamline drinking water supply
When chairman of Palayamkottai Zone of Tirunelveli Corporation M. Francis wanted to know the fate of SCADA system, at the cost of ₹46 crore, in the council meeting held on Thursday. Superintending Engineer Kannan said this sensor-based system was installed in the Corporation to improve pumping of drinking water from the pumping stations and distribution.
While 57 of the 102 sensors in SCADA system were receiving and transmitting signals properly, others did not due to lightening and accumulation of sediments being pumped along with drinking water from the wells, sunk in the Tamirabharani. Hence, the supplier, who was maintaining the system, had been asked to address this technical glitch.
'The supplier has applied a solution on trial basis in two spots, for which the Corporation need not pay anything. Since SCADA system is yet to become fully operational due to unforeseen technical issues, the entire amount intended for this project has not been given to the supplier. So, the contract firm will address all these issues to our satisfaction and hand it over to us,' Mr. Kannan said.
When Mr. Francis wanted to know about the progress of Murappanadu drinking water scheme, Commissioner N.O. Sukhaputra said the technical feasibility study for sinking an infiltration well at the right point in the Tamirabharani was going on as the Thoothukudi Corporation, which had sunk its infiltration well in the same area, was not happy with the spot selected for this scheme.
'Hence, we've identified another area in the river for sinking the well,' Dr. Sukhaputra said.
When chairperson of Tirunelveli Zone Maheshwari complained about damage caused to roads and drainage channels in her zone after the stretches were dug for laying underground drainage (UGD) pipes long back, Mr. Kannan said ₹11.36 crore had been earmarked for repairing the damaged drainage channels and ₹10 crore had been allotted for each zone for relaying the roads.
'A total of 436-km-long roads had been damaged due to the UGD work. We will repair them soon,' he added.
As councillor Gokila Vani of ward 12 urged the officials to take effective steps to control stray dog menace, several others backed her, saying the public were facing a serious threat from the stray dogs.
'If you continue to remain silent on this serious issue, the upcoming holidays will become a nightmare for our children,' Ms. Gokila Vani warned.
The officials said animal birth control exercise would be in place from May 10, but the reply did not satisfy the councillors.
When Ms. Gokila Vani asked why the construction of the primary health centre at Selvi Nagar was delayed, Dr. Sukhaputra instructed the Executive Engineer to visit the spot and resume the work immediately.
The council meeting condoled the demise of Pope Francis and expressed anguish over the killing of 28 persons in Pahalgham.

Salem Corporation provides manure produced at MCCs to farmers for free
The Salem Corporation is providing manure produced at the micro composting centres (MCC) to farmers free of cost. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards and collect the manure. The 60 wards in the Corporation generate over 550 tonnes of garbage every day, which is segregated as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste is sent to the MCCs located at 36 places to produce manure, and the remaining is sent to the Chettichavadi dump yard. Each MCC has the capacity to produce two tonnes of manure. This manure is being provided free of cost to farmers and people involved in terrace gardening. Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan was instructed to provide this manure to farmers. The Commissioner inspected MCCs and directed the staff to distribute the manure for free. The details of manure distributed to farmers should be provided at the monthly farmers' grievances redress meetings. Civic body officials said that at present 200 tonnes of manure are available at the MCCs. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards along with the application for receiving the manure. People who own terrace gardens can also apply with proper details, the officials added.

Maize cultivation to cover 5,500 hectares in Virudhunagar district
A target of 5,500 hectares of cultivation of maize in Virudhunagar district has been set under the Special Project on Maize Cultivation. In a statement, Virudhunagar District Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said maize remained the top crop among the millets in cultivation in the district. Under the project, farmers would get a kit comprising seeds, fertilizers and bio-fertilizers. Demonstration plots would be set up to explain to the farmers all techniques to be adopted for better yield. The Collector said a subsidy of ₹6,000 per acre would be given under the National Agricultural Development Project for paddy cultivation under system of rice intensification. The subsidy for cotton seeds was ₹140 a kg and for nipping the terminal bud of the main stem was ₹1,250 an acre. The farmers could approach the office of the Assistant Director of Agriculture,to get more details, the statement added.

Stick to stipulated deadline, Tirunelveli Corporation Commissioner tells officials and contractors
Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana, who inspected some of the ongoing development works in Palayamkottai and Thatchanallur zones of the urban civic body on Monday, instructed officials and contractors to stick to the stipulated deadline for completing the projects with superior quality. Since the clogged sewage channels near the water tank at Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai Zone would cause instant flooding during downpours on the Tiruchendur Road and along the Pothunala Street, Dr. Monika inspected the drainage channels at this spots and asked the officials to regularly clean these channels to avert flooding. When the Commissioner visited the Ramasamy Temple and the road connecting this temple and LIC Divisional Office near VOC Ground, she appealed to the public and the traders running roadside eateries not to leave the garbage getting generated in their shops on the road and dump it in the nearby drainage channels. She also instructed the officials to ensure cleanliness along this busy road by constantly monitoring the traders. 'Those who defy the Corporation's instructions and discard waste on the roads or dump it in the drainage channels should be taken to task if the repeated appeals go in vain,' she said. When she inspected the ongoing works at Children's Park, swimming pool, skating rink, walkers' path etc., all under the Smart City Mission near Bharathi School, the Commissioner asked the officials and the contractors to complete the projects assigned to them within the stipulated deadline. 'Any compromise on quality will be viewed very seriously as it will land you in legal complications besides blacklisting,' the Commissioner warned. Superintending Engineer Kannan and Assistant Commissioners Purandira Das and Johnson Devasahayam accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.
