Auburn football among several SEC schools in tight race for four-star WR Jase Mathews

Auburn remains high on the radar of Jase Mathews, who could announce his commitment soon.
Auburn football remains in the mix to land a talented wide receiver from Mississippi ahead of his commitment date. Will they close the deal?
Jase Mathews, a four-star wide receiver from Leakesville, Mississippi, is in the final stages of making his college decision and has placed Auburn high on his radar. Auburn is in the mix to land him, alongside fellow SEC squads Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and LSU. He gave an insight into his commitment decision in a recent interview with Rivals.
'I am really close to making a decision,' Mathews said. 'It is something I am thinking a lot about. My commitment should come before the season starts. I don't have a date set yet, but I am getting close.'
The next two months will be stressful and exciting for Mathews as he weighs every option and programs look to create separation. How does Auburn stack up? Mathews says that his relationship with one assistant coach is keeping them in the running.
'It is the connection with coach (Marcus) Davis that stands out the most,' Mathews said.
Ole Miss is the frontrunner according to Rivals with a 35.7% chance to land him, with Auburn next in line with a 23.5% forecast. Hugh Freeze and the Tigers' coaching staff are working to land a wide receiver for its 2026 haul after losing Denairius Gray to Kentucky last week. Auburn currently holds the No. 86 recruiting class according to 247Sports' 2026 rankings, and a commitment from Mathews, who is the No. 3 receiver in the 2026 class according to On3, would do wonders for its recruiting morale.

Georgia Predicted to Deal Recruiting Blow to Struggling SEC Program

Georgia Predicted to Deal Recruiting Blow to Struggling SEC Program originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs are on two different trajectories entering 2025. For starters, Auburn has not competed for a national title since 2013, when the Tigers lost to the Florida State Seminoles 34-31. Georgia's last national title was in 2022 after beating the TCU Horned Frogs 65-7. Advertisement Things got worse for Auburn on Wednesday, as it was predicted to lose the race for four-star safety Tyriq Green to Georgia. On3 Sports' Steve Wiltfong, Chad Simmons, Adam Gorney and Sam Spiegelman all had the Bulldogs landing Green. Georgia has the advantage already with Green, as he is a native of Buford, Georgia. Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze and Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Green is the No. 13 safety in the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2026 class. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine also heavily favors the Bulldogs. Georgia is the frontrunner, with a 93.5% chance to land the prospect. Auburn is in second at 2.5%, followed by the Miami Hurricanes at 1.3%. Advertisement If Kirby Smart does earn a commitment from Green, it would not be the first time Georgia has hurt Auburn in recruiting. The Bulldogs already flipped longtime Auburn commit Shadarius Toodle in June. Georgia is not the only SEC team to steal a commit from Auburn, either. The Kentucky Wildcats flipped four-star receiver Denairius Gray from the Tigers on July 1. Auburn's 2026 class currently ranks 71st on On3 Sports and is highlighted by four-star edge rusher Hezekiah Harris, four-star athlete Peyton Falzone and three-star linebacker Adam Balougun-Ali. The Tigers face the Baylor Bears in their season opener on August 29. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Rory McIlroy's Haircut at Scottish Open Has Fans Wondering if Poppy Cut It

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Say goodbye to Rory McIlroy's curly hair because he shaved it off ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open. The Northern Irishman unveiled a new cut on Wednesday morning, and it made many fans do a double-take. A few golf outlets tweeted out the photo, and it is among the many reasons the five-time major winner went viral this week. NORTH BERWICK, SCOTLAND - JULY 09: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland talks to the media during a press conference prior to the Genesis Scottish Open 2025 at The Renaissance Club on July 09, 2025 in North Berwick, Scotland. More Photo byMcIlroy's comparison of elite athletes during his press conference and the persimmon driver he received for completing the grand slam were also among the news that people couldn't stop discussing. McIlroy's signature curly hair has been part of his brand, whether he admits it or not. Now, he no longer resembles himself, and the trolls enjoyed making fun of his lack of hair. One X, formerly Twitter, user wondered if his toddler, Poppy, cut it for him. Some people didn't think the child did it, but himself. "With all that money, you'd think he wouldn't have to cut it himself," another fan joked. Many fans commented that his hair change made him appear significantly older than 36. "Well, he looks 20 years older." Some people thought he looked like the iconic character, Mr. Bean. However, outside the Poppy comment, this reaction from X user Cill Chainnigh may be the best one. McIlroy has not had the easiest time since winning the Masters and career grand slam. Regaining that confidence he had in Augusta has not been the easiest thing to do. It has been a roller coaster of emotions for him, and it also seemed like a stressful time. The issues began at Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship, where his driver was non-conforming. He skipped the media after the news broke and did not speak again until the RBC Canadian Open. The 2023 Scottish Open winner would go on to miss the cut in Canada and post his worst finish in his long PGA Tour career. At the U.S. Open, McIlroy received more criticism for his comments on the media. He finished T19. A couple of weeks later, at the Travelers Championship, he made more comments about the media. Still, McIlroy finally recorded his first top 10 since the Truist Championship in May with a T6. Maybe McIlroy is on the rise again as the final major championship approaches in his home country. Not to mention, he could be finding form for the playoffs and the upcoming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. However, if he does not play well this week at the Scottish Open, fans will likely blame the new haircut and not let him forget about it. Red Sox's Alex Bregman offers optimistic return timeline ahead of MLB All-Star break

The post Red Sox's Alex Bregman offers optimistic return timeline ahead of MLB All-Star break appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox are riding a four-game winning streak and gaining ground in the AL East, but the biggest boost might still be coming. Alex Bregman's injury update on Monday came with real optimism, as the star third baseman told reporters he's targeting a return before or just after the MLB All-Star break 2025. Advertisement Speaking to MassLive's Christopher Smith, Bregman revealed he's feeling close to game-ready and hopeful to return to the lineup sooner rather than later. Smith later shared the exchange on X (formerly known as Twitter). 'Trending toward a return here really quickly whether it's the end of this week or the first game after the break. One of those two. But hoping it will be the end of this week.' Bregman has been sidelined since May 23rd with a strained right quadriceps. Monday marked his 40th missed game of the season, but the veteran slugger says he may avoid a rehab assignment altogether. That would be a welcome development for a Red Sox team currently sitting at 47-45 and in striking distance of a postseason spot. Prior to the injury, the two-time World Series champion was slashing .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. Since signing a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston in February, he quickly emerged as a central piece of the Red Sox offense, taking over at third base while Rafael Devers shifted to designated hitter. His early-season highlights included a five-hit, two-homer game against the Tampa Bay Rays and recognition as AL Player of the Week Advertisement His return could be pivotal in a potential Red Sox playoff push. The team currently sits fourth in the AL East, just 6.5 games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays, three games back of the second-place New York Yankees, and two behind the Rays. With Bregman back in the lineup, Boston would regain a reliable middle-of-the-order bat capable of shifting close games in their favor. Bregman noted that he doesn't expect to participate in the All-Star Game itself, despite being named as a reserve. Instead, he plans to keep training through the break and may attend the Home Run Derby as a spectator. While Boston has posted a strong 7-3 record over their last 10 games, including wins in seven of their last eight, adding Bregman back into the mix could be a game-changer. His injury update comes at a pivotal time, as the Red Sox aim to carry momentum out of the break and strengthen their hold in the Wild Card race. If his quad holds up and he returns in form, Bregman could be the missing piece the club needs to make serious noise in the second half of the season.
