Meta and Oakley's next-gen smart glasses are a GoPro for your face

As someone who has a set of the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, I'm pretty happy with them. But my biggest complaint has got to be around the camera, which can only shoot in 1080p. Meta and Oakley have just unveiled their latest bit of smart eyewear, and it solves that problem. In fact, these smart glasses are more like a GoPro for your face.
The Oakley Meta HSTN are a new line of Performance AI glasses that attempt to fuse Oakley's sporty design with Meta's growing obsession with putting AI into absolutely everything. And the result actually looks quite compelling – I think they're a big upgrade over the Ray-Ban models in a few key ways.
So what's the deal? Like other smart glasses, when you're busy doing something, instead of fumbling for a phone or strapping a camera to your chest, you simply say, 'Hey Meta, take a video.' But this time around your exploits are captured in crisp 3K. Not quite 4K, but definitely a big step up from the 1080p resolution of the Meta Ray-Ban glasses.
While the Meta Ray-Bans are more for everyday wear, Oakley's version is design for those who are active. Or at least those of us who like to look the part while having a pint post-'workout.' And unlike the Ray-Bans, Oakley Meta HSTN actually looks like it could survive being put through some rough and tumble.
Battery life promises to be decent too. You'll get up to 8 hours per charge, and the case adds an excellent 48 hours on the go. Meta reckons it even gives you 50% of juice in 20 minutes, which is faster than most people can lace up their trainers. The open-ear speakers mean your music stays pumped without cutting you off from traffic.
There's also Meta AI integration, of course – because it wouldn't be a Meta product if you couldn't talk to it. I actually think Meta's AI is one of the best parts about the current Ray-Ban models. With the Oakley specs, you could ask about the wind on the golf course, check surf conditions, or just have a chat.
The Limited Edition Oakley Meta HSTN are available to pre-order from 11 July at $499. The rest of the line-up starts at $399 and will be available later this summer across the US, UK, and a host of other countries.

A new Xbox has launched – but it doesn't look like a console

We've finally just got an Xbox handheld console, thanks to the updated ROG Ally. But now, there's a brand new Xbox you can buy – and it isn't even a console. Microsoft and Meta have birthed a bizarre but somehow compelling offspring: the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition. It's a VR headset that looks like it could belong under your telly. Microsoft has taken Meta's Quest 3S headset and dressed it up in Xbox's Carbon Black and Velocity Green. It's the first limited edition Quest headset ever, and I've got to admit, it's got some serious shelf appeal. The bundle is quite the care package. You get the custom 128GB headset, matching Touch Plus controllers (for the full Xbox experience), an Elite Strap for comfort, a limited-edition Wireless Controller, and three months each of Meta Horizon+ and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. That's a lot of gear before you've even pressed start. The partnership between the brands isn't exactly new – they first rolled out Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest back in 2023 – but this is the most physical expression of that alliance yet. It's the gaming giant's way of saying, 'Who needs a telly when you can game on a floating screen hovering in your living room?' And thanks to cloud gaming, you've got access to a hefty library of titles like Avowed, Oblivion Remastered, and the gloriously swampy South of Midnight, all without a console in sight. It's also a win for continuity. If you start a game in VR, you can continue it on your console or PC, without missing a beat. Progress, achievements, and that unsaved moment of panic mid-boss fight? All travel with you. The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is available now for $400/£400 from Meta, Best Buy, Argos, and EE. Supplies are limited – and knowing Xbox fans, this thing might vanish faster than your storage space.

Finally! WhatsApp gives into one of its ‘biggest requests' – could Instagram follow?

Hell has frozen over. Well at least that's what it seemed like would have to happen before WhatsApp launched….an iPad app for Apple's popular tablet. And it's available now through the App Store. Yes, 15 years after the debut of Apple's tablet and 16 years after the launch of the independent WhatsApp (before it was swallowed by Meta) we finally have what the company itself admits was one of its 'biggest requests'. And no wonder. According to DataReportal, WhatsApp is used by around a quarter of the world's population. Over 2bn people. Yep. So the question remains why it has taken so long to do an app for the world's most popular tablet. Head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart stated in a 2022 interview with The Verge that 'people have wanted an iPad app for a long time… We'd love to do it'. Clearly not so much as to do it within the last three years, leaving iPad users in the odd place of having to use WhatsApp through the browser. And that's even though the app has been available natively on macOS for some years (used as a paired device with your phone) and was revamped in 2023 alongside the Windows equivalent. Could it have been that Meta didn't want to make it easy for the iPad to grow among its users, harboring hopes of its own tablet range? Or is it simply that the app was traditionally tied to a phone number? Perhaps, but maybe we won't find out until the email appears as part of some future court case or other public record. In any case, the iPad app is the same app you'll know and love from your iOS or Android phone so you can message all those time-consuming groups and make video and audio calls with up to 32 people, share your screen. You can once again use both front and back cameras. It also works with the iPad's multitasking capabilities including Split View and Slide Over as well as the much-maligned Stage Manager so you can use another app while you're on a video call or sending a message. As the WhatsApp blog post states, Stage Manager is available on iPad Pro with M4, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later) and iPad Air (5th generation), iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and later), iPad Air 13-inch (M2 and later). Oh, and WhatsApp also works with Apple Pencil as well as any Bluetooth keyboard or Magic Keyboard as you'd expect.
