J&K Cong netas detained as police block rally seeking statehood

PTI photo JAMMU: J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra and senior functionaries GA Mir, Lal Singh, Raman Bhalla, and Ravinder Sharma were detained Sunday as police blocked the party's planned 'statehood march' in Jammu. They were taken to the police lines and released later. Congress has ramped up its statehood campaign under the banner 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq', holding protests and rallies across the region. A heavy police contingent halted the protest as Congress functionaries and workers began marching toward Raj Bhawan to submit a memorandum to LG Manoj Sinha demanding the restoration of J&K's statehood, which was revoked following the abrogation of Article 370 in Aug 2019 and bifurcation of the region into Union territories, including Ladakh. Karra said the party would proceed with its 'Delhi Challo' programme Monday to gherao Parliament on the first day of the monsoon session, despite police crackdowns in Jammu and Srinagar. 'These harsh measures will only strengthen our resolve,' he said, adding that MPs from INDIA bloc support the demand for full statehood. Former JKPCC chief and ex-minister Mir said: 'We're not asking for anything special — this is a commitment made by the PM himself.'

Congress leaders detained in Jammu as police foil street march for J&K Statehood

The top leadership of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir, including the party's national secretary G.A. Mir and its J&K president Tariq Hameed Karra, were detained in Jammu on Sunday (July 20, 2025), as the police foiled the party's street campaign for the restoration of 'full statehood' to J&K. The Congress leaders faced off with the J&K police when they began a protest in Jammu's Gandhi Nagar area under their 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq (Our State, Our Rights)' campaign, with a 'Jammu Chalo' march on Sunday, and plans for a 'Delhi Chalo' march to gherao Parliament as well. 'In a blatant display of authority, the police under the control of the BJP and the Lieutenant Governor's administration arrested the party leaders,' a Congress spokesperson said. 'Undermines democracy' The Congress accused the police of 'manhandling' Rajouri MLA Iftkhar Ahmed. 'The J&K police behaviour during the 'Jammu Chalo' march for Statehood restoration is utterly unacceptable. This kind of behaviour directed at an elected representative not only undermines democratic principles but also infringes upon the right to peaceful protest,' the Congress spokesperson said. The party said it was imperative that authorities conduct a thorough investigation immediately, hold those responsible accountable, and reinforce democratic values to restore and maintain public trust in public institutions. 'Such actions cannot be endured in a healthy democracy,' the party spokesperson added. 'Undeclared emergency' The J&K party chief, Mr. Karra, slammed the police action. 'The administration used undemocratic methods to foil our peaceful campaign, which has been going on for the past six months. Today's procession was in favour of our 'Chalo Chalo, Delhi Chalo' campaign. We will not be silenced or stopped,' he said. 'Our party's peaceful call for 'Jammu Chalo' to demand the restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir was met with a massive show of force. Barricades, locked gates, and a protest site turned into a chawni (cantonment). Is this the new normal? An undeclared emergency where submitting a memorandum and protesting for our rights is treated as a crime?' he added. The Congress leaders and workers were heading to the Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum on the restoration of Statehood when the police took action against them. Raising issue in Parliament 'Did Prime Minister Narendra Modi lie on the floor of Parliament about granting statehood for J&K? If not, why has J&K Police arrested JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra ji and other Congress leaders? Why did they seal the PCC Office in Srinagar yesterday & stop our party workers from protesting peacefully for statehood?' Congress leader and MP K.C. Venugopal asked, in a post on X. During the upcoming Parliament session, the INDIA bloc plans to raise the demand for immediate restoration of full statehood to J&K, Mr. Venugopal said. 'This farce cannot go on any longer,' he added. The street protests by the Congress in J&K come days after the Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister demanding the restoration of Statehood to J&K, which was downgraded to a Union Territory and saw its special status scrapped in 2019.

March for statehood: J&K Congress president among others detained, later released

Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra among many, including sitting legislators and senior party leaders, was detained on Sunday by police during their march demanding restoration of statehood to J&K. The march was organised under the banner 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq' which was foiled by police for the second time in the past two days. On Saturday, a Congress march to Raj Bhawan in Kashmir was stopped by police in Srinagar town. In Jammu, Congress workers led by Karra and other senior leaders took out the march to submit a memorandum at Raj Bhawan on Sunday. However, they were first stopped near their party headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk. After a brief exchange of words and minor scuffle with police, they continued their march, only to be intercepted again on the Residency Road. They were detained and taken to district police lines in buses, but were released after some time. Criticising the authorities, Karra said that their action shows their frustration and their mentality that they do not believe in a democratic system and have no respect for people's voice. He said that the workers were not on the roads to spread unrest, but to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Lieutenant Governor championing people's demand for statehood. Pointing out that the Congress will not be cowed down, Karra said the party will go ahead with its 'Delhi challo' programme on Monday to 'ghareo' Parliament on the Monsoon Session's first day. The INDIA bloc MPs support the demand for Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, he said.

J&K's ‘dual control' leading to disconnect with people, says Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra

The Congress on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) said the dual control of Jammu and Kashmir has 'immensely contributed to chaos leading to the disconnect and non-representation of people both at political as well as administrative level'. 'Disconnect and non-representation of people are apparently visible on the ground. The Centre is running away from the promises it made on the floor of Parliament to people of J&K. The Congress won't remain silent, we will continue to fight vigorously for the Statehood and safeguarding rights of our people, who have suffered enormously on all fronts due to the policies of BJP,' J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra said. The JKPCC has launched meetings of block presidents of three Lok Sabha segments of Kashmir region. 'The party will also be holding district level conventions under the slogan Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq shortly to reiterate Congress party's strong urge for restoration of complete statehood to J&K,' a Congress spokesman said. The first phase of district-level conventions mission Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq was completed in the Jammu region. Mr. Karra asked the district presidents and party workers 'to gear up for the upcoming district level political conventions, which will send a strong signal to the BJP government at the Centre that its diversionary tactics from the real issues concerning J&K will not be accepted'. 'The deliberate delay in restoration of Statehood will no longer work, Centre has to take urgent measures to restore statehood to J&K which has been snatched by a stroke of pen,' Mr. Karra said. He also asked BJP's J&K unit 'to clear its stand whether they are in favour of restoration of Statehood or not?'
