Bihar cabinet approves renaming of Gaya town to 'Gaya Ji' citing sentiment
Briefing the reporters after the meeting the State's additional chief secretary S Siddharth said that the decision was taken in view of local sentiments and the townS historical and religious significance.
Taking to X, Janata Dal United (JDU) National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha thanked CM Nitish Kumar for renaming the town
"I am thankful to the honourable Chief Minister from the bottom of my heart for this important decision of changing the name and hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the residents of 'Gayaji'," he said.
BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also welcomed the decision and said that this decision highlights the religious significance of Gaya.
"The decision of the state cabinet to rename Gaya as 'Gayaji' is a matter of welcome and pride. This decision not only further highlights the religious significance of Gaya but also reflects the NDA government's dedication towards Sanatan culture and commitment to the preservation of religious places," Prasad wrote on X.
Gaya town is known for its religious significance. Lakhs of tourists from across the globe visit Gaya every year during 'Pitrapaksh' to offer 'Pind Daan' to the souls of ancestors.
Gaya was the part of the ancient Magadh Empire. The city is located on the bank of Falgu River. hree hills Mangala-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayoni surround it from three sides. The most attractive destination in Gaya is Vishnupad Temple. The temple is located on the bank of river Falgu River and has footprint of Vishnu incised into a block of basalt. People believe that Lord Vishnu killed Gayasur by placing his foot on Gayasur's chest.
Bodhgaya is also situated in Gaya which is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage centre in the world. It was here under a banyan tree, the Bodhi Tree, Gautama attained supreme knowledge to become Buddha.

Bihar Cabinet reserves 85% of teaching jobs for natives ahead of polls
In the run-up to the Bihar Assembly polls, the state cabinet on Tuesday approved the implementation of a domicile policy for teacher recruitment, reserving approximately 85 per cent of posts for native residents of Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had announced on Monday that the policy would be applied to the recruitment process for school teachers. 'The proposal for giving preference to native residents of the state in teachers' recruitment exams was cleared,' said Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat) S Siddharth following the cabinet meeting. He said that more than 50 per cent of seats were already reserved for residents of the state, as quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) accounted for nearly 50 per cent, with an additional 10 per cent set aside for the economically weaker sections. Siddharth also noted that 35 per cent of posts are reserved for women, and the government has already decided that only Bihar residents will be eligible under that category. The additional chief secretary further stated that of the remaining positions, 40 per cent would now be allocated to native residents of Bihar who had completed their class 10 and class 12 education within the state. He added that this would result in the effective reservation for native residents exceeding 85 per cent. Increased honorarium for school support staff On August 1, Nitish Kumr announced a revision of the honorarium for support staff working in government schools, including cooks, night watchmen, and physical education and health instructors. In a post on X, Kumar stated that the monthly honorarium for cooks under the mid-day meal scheme had been increased from ₹1,650 to ₹3,300. Night watchmen would now receive ₹10,000 per month, while physical education and health instructors would be paid ₹16,000. Additionally, the annual salary increment for instructors has been raised from ₹200 to ₹400. Hike announced for ASHA, Mamta workers In July, the chief minister had also announced a rise in monthly incentives for ASHA workers, increasing their pay from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. The incentive for Mamta workers was likewise doubled—from ₹300 to ₹600 per delivery. Kumar stated that the revised incentive structure would enhance worker morale and help strengthen healthcare services in rural areas. In the lead-up to the Assembly polls, there have been growing efforts to rally public support around the issue of domicile in the state. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has pledged to implement a '100 per cent domicile' policy if the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) forms the government. Union minister Chirag Paswan also recently backed the demand for a domicile policy. Assembly elections in Bihar are expected to be conducted in November.

5 lesser-known facts about Satyapal Malik: From student leader to controversial Governor
Satyapal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on 5 August after a prolonged illness at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in the national capital. Malik was 79. Malik, hailed by many as the 'voice' of farmers, spent the last few years of his life in controversies, including a corruption case handled by the country's premier investigation agency – the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Malik—a Jat leader who has been with both the Congress and the BJP—oversaw the abrogation of Article 370, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 as the governor of the erstwhile state. As fate would have it, Malik died on Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the move taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in its second term. After his stint in Jammu and Kashmir, Malik served as Governor of Goa and Meghalaya, too. Malik was born in 1964 in Hisawada village of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Malik pursued a Bachelor of Science and LLB degrees from Meerut University. Malik entered active politics in 1965-66 as a student leader and served as President of the Meerut College Students Union and the Students Union at Meerut University, which is now known as Choudhary Charan Singh University. Malik was inspired by the socialist ideology of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia. Malik was first elected to any public office as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, as a member of Charan Singh's Bharatiya Kranti Dal. Later, after the formation of Bharatiya Lok Dal, he joined the party and became the general secretary of Lok Dal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by Malik's death. In 1980, Malik entered the Rajya Sabha and later briefly joined the Congress in 1984. He resigned in 1987 over the Bofors scandal and co-founded the Jan Morcha with VP Singh. In 1989, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Aligarh as a Janata Dal candidate and briefly served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism in the VP Singh government. Malik joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2004 and served as its National Vice President until he was appointed Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018. Malik also had his share of controversies. While he courted controversies through his statements as Governor of different states, he was also the Centre of graft investigations by the CBI. Incidentally, Malik had flagged the graft case in the first place. In May, the CBI filed a chargesheet against seven people, including Malik, in a case of alleged corruption in the award of a contract for a hydel project in Kishtwar district. The agency had earlier questioned Malik as a witness. In fact, it was on Malik's allegations that the case was first registered in 2022. In October 2021, two years after leaving office as Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Malik claimed he had been offered ₹ 300 crore in bribes to clear two files. 'One of the secretaries told me that these are shady deals, but he can get ₹ 150 crore each. I told him that I had come to J&K with five kurta-pajamas and would leave with that,' Malik said at an event in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. In November 2018, Malik, the then governor of Jammu and Kashmir, had famously blamed a state holiday for not receiving PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti's fax staking claim to form the government. Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti had faxed a letter to Malik's office declaring a joint bid by her People's Democratic Party and the National Conference, aided by the Congress, to form the government in the erstwhile state, then under the governor's rule. I told him that I had come to J&K with five kurta-pajamas and would leave with that. Hours later, however, Malik, without acknowledging receipt of the fax, ordered dissolution of the Assembly, where the three parties hold 56 of the 87 seats.

He fearlessly and candidly held a mirror to the truth in front of those in power. My deepest condolences to the grieving family and supporters." "I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former Governor Satyapal Malik Ji. I will always remember him as a person who fearlessly spoke the truth until his last moment and consistently advocated for the interests of the people. I express my heartfelt condolences to his family, supporters, and well-wishers," leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said. Once a senior BJP leader, Malik gained attention for his outspoken nature and later emerged as a sharp critic of the party. He stirred controversy by publicly alleging security failures in the 2019 Pulwama attack and highlighting corruption issues in the Kiru Hydropower Project.` Malik died at the age of 79 while undergoing treatment at around at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi.
