Coronation Street favourite sacked on the spot after weird behaviour

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Debbie Webster decided to kiss Ryan Connor during Monday night's episode of Coronation Street, but things did not end well when he tried to offer her support.
Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) was diagnosed with dementia on Coronation Street some months ago, but on Monday night's episode of the ITV soap, her struggles started to take their toll on other residents of Weatherfield.

The Street favourite manages the Chariot Square Hotel and was at the front desk alongside colleague Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) on what appeared to be a normal morning until things took a surprising turn. When an angry guest started an argument with Debbie over her lack of sleep, the hotel manager fired back at her with a torrent of sarcastic comments that the customer caught on camera. However, Ryan convinced her to delete the footage and when he tells Debbie that he managed to appease her letting her know that his boss is "under a lot of stress" at the moment, a delighted Debbie grabbed him and kissed him. Ryan was visibly shocked and left the front desk for a period of time, but when he returned and attempted to confront Debbie over the incident, she seemingly had no recollection.

When Debbie's partner Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) came to the hotel looking for her, he found Ryan, who explained that she was out but revealed his concerns to him after he researched vascular dementia following her surprise move. He wondered if she had "misread the signals", and confessed that she kissed him earlier that morning but Debbie herself interrupted the awkward moment as she came back to work. Oblivious to what has gone on, Ronnie tells Debbie that Ryan has told him about the kiss but she looked confused for a second and then decided to brush it off as a "friendly smacker".

Things only got worse in for all involved in the situation when Ryan decided to try to diffuse things by suggesting they forget about everything, but an angry Debbie took offence at the fact that others had been discussing her condition and stormed out. Later on, Debbie worried that no one would be able to look at her without seeing her condition and when Ryan tried to apologise to her whilst mentioning her condition again, she decided to sack him on the spot and ordered him to clear out his locker.
In the Rovers, she explained to Ronnie that she refuses to see her condition as a "death sentence", but the kiss seemed to have been the least of Debbie's worries as earlier that morning she had caught brother Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) with a split lip and bruises. She soon realised he was in need of financial help and offered to step in. But she mistakenly believed that he only needed a small sum, although in the garage it soon became apparent that the mechanic was in far more debt than originally thought.

Following a threatening phone call overheard by Abi ( Sally Carman), she coaxes the problem out of him and he claims that he is £50,000 in debt to those whom he loaned the money from to keep his business going. A desperate Abi pleaded with Carl to raise the money and admitted that she "couldn't bear" to lose him as their secret affair continued to heat up. But when Carl revealed the full extent of his need to Debbie, she was exasperated he refused to reveal to her what he actually wanted it for. She left the pub, and, moments later, Abi appeared and he reassured her that he was "in the clear" about everything. But that was not the case, as he received a text message demanding the money.
For actress Sue, she previously spoke of how "frightened" she was in taking on the dementia storyline and explained to The Mirror: 'I was a little bit frightened. It was a lot of information to process, because it's not like a drama series where you might be doing it for six weeks. This is playing someone with dementia for one, two, three years. So, it was a case of 'can I do it? Am I ready?'

"I don't do things by halves. I'm either all in or all out. I like to research and get the best I can out of a script, so it can consume my life for as long as the story lasts.'
Recalling the meeting with cobbles boss Kate Brooks, Sue, 57, added: 'Our first chat was really thorough. She said: 'I love Debbie and I want you to tell this story. It's going to be a heartbreaking journey of emotion and honesty. Sad, hopeful, uplifting and truthful. Will you do it?'
'I went home and didn't sleep a wink that night. I talked it through with my husband. He said 'what would be the reason for not doing it?' I realised it was fear."

ITV crime series with 'perfect' Rotten Tomatoes score available to stream now

Fans are hailing the series - starring former Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose-Ayling Ellis - as 'groundbreaking' and 'addictive' An ITV crime thriller series has been hailed for its "riveting" acting. TV critics have been unable to pull themselves away from the programme, which many say is "addictive". ‌ Starring in the lead role in Code of Silence is Strictly Come Dancing star Rose Ayling-Ellis as Alison Brooks, a deaf civilian who is drafted in to assist a major police investigation; with all their hopes pinned on her ability to help aid their search. ‌ "Alison Brooks' lipreading skills pull her into the police's investigation of a dangerous gang, but her undeniable connection with criminal Liam Barlow threatens everything," the official synopsis reads. ‌ The series, which is now available on ITV and aired on the channel in May, has been given a perfect score of 100% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Although some feedback is mixed, it appears the one thing in common is that everyone could agree they couldn't stop watching. One critic wrote: "Yes, this is a pretty traditional crime drama in a host of ways, but it's got a true star turn in the lead and a story that will keep you entertained from start to finish." ‌ Lavishing praise on Ellis, another wrote: "With Code of Silence (Ayling-Ellis) is revealed to be something else: a riveting actress with the talent to anchor a knuckle-biting criminal caper." One noted: "But although it's not a heavyweight crime drama, it's still worth a watch for its simulation of the deaf experience. The handling of lip-reading is fascinating, and the sound effects are perfect." "Is every second of this series satisfying? Nope. Still, overall, Code of Silence is truly groundbreaking, and the first three instalments are sublime," wrote another viewer. ‌ Someone else added: "You can watch and learn - or at least newly appreciate an under-acknowledged world - without being shortchanged on your entertainment at all. That's quite a triumph." "Coincidences abound... But it's still enjoyable, and the sheer talent of the people involved keep things absorbing. An addictive Sunday night drama," someone else penned. ‌ It appears the show has already become a smash hit with viewers, with a second series reportedly already underway. During her stint on Strictly Come Dancing, Ayling-Ellis won the show in 2021 with a routine that grabbed viewer attention when the accompanying music fell silent halfway through to mirror her experience of being deaf. Between her time in the BBC dance competition, her previous stint in EastEnders and her starring role in this ITV crime thriller, Ayling-Ellis has become a face to champion the deaf community in its entirety.

Sharon Osbourne said Ozzy hated her Ozempic use as she reveals why she did it

Sharon Osbourne revealed her beloved late husband, Ozzy Osbourne, was worried about her about using Ozempic, which she took to help her lose weight Sharon Osbourne admitted her late husband, Ozzy Osbourne, was concerned about his much-loved wife after she started using Ozempic. The mum-of-three, 72, tried the drug, which is designed to treat diabetes - but is now used for weight loss - in 2023 to help her lose a few pounds. ‌ However, after injecting Ozempic, which manages glucose levels, Mrs O, who stopped taking the medication after weighing less than 100 lbs., admitted she had lost too much weight, which left doting husband Ozzy concerned. ‌ Revealing she was tired of her weight "going up and down", she told Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway on ITV 's Good Morning Britain: 'I was just fed up of going back and forth with my weight, constantly like this. And I just thought, I've tried everything – everything I've tried. And so, I thought well, might as well try it (Ozempic) and I did.' ‌ However, admitting that her husband was not a fan of the drug, she confessed: 'He doesn't like it. And he's scared. He thinks that something's going to happen to me. (He thinks) 'This is it. There's nothing's perfect. If you've got skinny, then something else is gonna happen.'' Speaking on whether she was happy with her weight loss, she concluded: 'I could do with putting on a few pounds, but at this point, the way my body is, it's not listening. It's staying where it is.' Sharon, who is now grieving the tragic loss of her husband Ozzy, after he passed away at the age of 76, mere weeks after his final gig in his home city of Birmingham, has spoken openly about her health concerns over the years. ‌ The fiercely protective mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer in the summer of 2002, the same year that The Osbournes premiered on MTV. Sharon, who found fame as Ozzy's manager, did everything she could to protect her children from the heartbreaking realities of the disease, which had spread to her lymph nodes. In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, the X Factor star was asked why she continued working during her illness. Sharon replied: "Because I didn't want my kids and my husband to know how sick I was. When you say 'cancer', everybody always thinks 'death'. And you've got to remember it was 23 years ago." ‌ The Celebrity Big Brother star continued: "At that point, cancer wasn't the same as it is now. So everybody always thought it was a death sentence and I didn't want my kids to have fear constantly surrounding them. I didn't want it." Sharon, then 49, didn't shy away from discussing her cancer while filming, with the show including everything from her chemotherapy treatment to her decision to turn to Cher's wig maker after her hair fell out. However, although the family put on a brave united front, Ozzy later opened up about his fears for Sharon's life in an interview with Classic Rock magazine. He revealed: "I thought she was going to die. I never knew anybody that had survived cancer. As far as I was concerned, patient plus cancer equals death. But my wife is a very strong woman."

Karen Pirie viewers open-mouthed as EastEnders star pops up in ITV detective drama with VERY different look

Karen Pirie viewers have been left open-mouthed after a EastEnders star popped up in a new ITV detective drama with a distinctly different look. The second series of Karen Pirie, a series based on Val McDermid's Inspector Karen Pirie, fit our screens earlier this month. The show originally aired its first series on ITV in September 2022. It stars Lauren Lyle as DS/DI Karen Pirie, Chris Jenks as DC /DS Jason Murray, Zach Mywatt as DS Phil Parhatka and Rakhee Thakrar as Bel Richmond. ITVX's official synopsis reads: 'The relentless Scottish DI returns with a baffling new cold case. 'Can she crack the infamous 80s disappearance of an oil heiress and her son? BAFTA-winning drama starring Lauren Lyle.' And some have just realised where they recognise Dr. River Wilde from, the character who is Karen's best pal and professor of forensic anthropology and archaeology. Dr. River is played by actress Emer Kenny, 35, who has previously played a number of other roles in various TV shows. But many will remember her taking on the role of Zsa Zsa Carter in EastEnders in 2010. One said on the EastEnders Facebook fan page: 'Emer Kenny who played Zsa Zsa Carter is in the new ITV show Karen Pirie.' 'I thought it was her!' 'Same here I recognised her from somewhere.' The former soap star starred in 56 episodes and also appeared in the first and second series of EastEnders: E20. Her alter-ego is the daughter of Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) and Mark Reynolds. She turned up in Walford and caused a scene after she kissed Peter Beale (Thomas Law) at a party in front of Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa). Zsa Zsa then appears in E20, where her relationship with Leon Small (Sam Attwater) plays out and decides to move to France in her van because of the drama. Not only that, she's also been a screen writer for the BBC soap for three episodes, with one in 2012, another in 2013 and another the following year. One of Emer's first roles was playing Gail in Coming Down the Mountain. She later played Kate in Freefall, Rebecca in Lesbian Vampire Killers and Joan Bartlett in Eric and Ernie. Between 2012 and 2014 she played Danielle Reeves in Pramface. She also played Hope in Beaver Falls, Rachel in Badults and Izzy in Siblings. Emer took on the role of Penelope Windermere between 2017 and 2021. Most recently she's appeared in The Duchess and The Curse. The actress has also done a lot of writing over the years for various TV shows. Some include EastEnders, Doctors, Holby City, Harlots, Save Me, Karen Pirie and The Curse. Emer is married to TV presenter Rick Edwards, 46 and the couple share one son. The pair tied the knot in 2016, but met three years prior at a Jessie Cave show, with Rick proposing just six weeks later. Earlier this week ITV viewers dubbed Karen Pirie 'the new Line Of Duty ' and binged through episodes. The show is produced by World Productions, the same company behind other hits including Bodyguard and Line Of Duty. Sunday's episode saw Detective Karen investigate a challenging kidnapping case when a man's body is found. The remaining episodes of the new season will air each Sunday evening on ITV1, and will be available to stream on ITVX. The new season of Karen Pirie was well-received by some fans who took to social media to rave. One posted on X: 'Enjoyable first episode of the new series, so intriguing I immediately binge-watched the other two on ITVX!' Another chimed in: 'I thought #KarenPirie was excellent TV, looking forward to next Sunday.' Someone else said: '35 minutes in and I'm hooked. This is brilliant #KarenPirie.' 'Feel like I've been waiting a lifetime for this new series of #KarenPirie,' one fan posted. 'The new Line of Duty I think!' someone else said, according to WalesOnline. Another reportedly added: 'Watched the first three episodes already! So good.' 'Tried watching #KarenPirie but really don't care about any character past or present. Boring drama by numbers.' The new season of Karen Pirie was well-received by some fans who took to social media to rave, though not everyone was so impressed The Mail's Christoper Stevens rated the drama an impressive five out of five stars. He described the story line and various 'plots as deep and dark as a coal mine shaft'. 'The characters aren't merely well drawn — they're alive, constantly seeking to understand and learn more about each other,' the critic gushed. Karen Pirie airs on ITV1 on Sundays at 8pm and streams on ITVX.
