Coronation Street fan favourite fired on the spot after strange behaviour
The Coronation Street star ran into some bother on the cobbles this week. Coronation Street's Debbie Webster was diagnosed with dementia on the ITV soap some months ago but on Monday night's episode, her struggles began to take their toll on other residents of Weatherfield. The fan favourite, played by Sue Davaney, manages the Chariot Square Hotel and was at the front desk beside colleague Ryan Connor, portrayed by Ryan Prescott, on what seemed to be an ordinary morning until things took an unexpected turn. When a disgruntled guest started arguing with Debbie over her lack of sleep, the hotel manager hit back at her with a series of sarcastic comments which the customer caught on camera. However, Ryan managed to convince her to delete the footage and when he told Debbie that he was able to get her to change her mind by saying that his boss is "under a lot of stress" at the moment, a delighted Debbie grabbed him and kissed him. Ryan was left visibly shocked by her actions and left the front desk for a period of time. When he came back, he tried to confront Debbie over the incident but she seemingly had no memory of it. When Debbie's partner Ronnie Bailey, played by Vinta Morgan, came to the hotel looking for her, he bumped into Ryan, who explained that she was out but he voiced his concerns ton him after researching vascular dementia following her unexpected lunge on him, the Mirror reports. He considered if she had "misread the signals", and admitted that she kissed him earlier that morning but Debbie herself interrupted the awkward moment as she came back to work. Oblivious to what has gone on, Ronnie tells Debbie that Ryan has told him about the kiss but she looked confused for a second and then decided to brush it off as a "friendly smacker". Things went from bad to worse for all involved when Ryan attempted to diffuse the situation by suggesting they forget about it. However, an angry Debbie took offence at the fact that others had been discussing her condition and stormed out. Debbie was then left worried that no one would be able to interact with her without seeing her condition first. When Ryan tried to apologise to her whilst mentioning her condition again, she decided to sack him on the spot and ordered him to clear out his locker. In the Rovers, she told Ronnie that she refuses to see her condition as a "death sentence". However, the surprise kiss seemed to have been the least of Debbie's worries as earlier that morning she had caught brother Carl Webster, played by Jonathan Howard, with a split lip and bruises. She quickly realised he was in need of financial help and offered to step in. Debbie made the mistake of thinking her brother only needed a small sum before it became clear that the mechanic was in far more debt than originally thought. After a threatening phone call overheard by Abi, played by Sally Carman, she finally gets the problem out of him and he claims that he is £50k in debt to those whom he loaned the money from to keep his business going. A desperate Abi pleaded with Carl to raise the money as she said that she "couldn't bear" to lose him as their secret affair continued to heat up. However, when Carl revealed the full extent of his needs to Debbie, she was exasperated that he refused to reveal to her what he actually wanted it for. She left the pub, and, moments later, Abi appeared and he reassured her that he was "in the clear" about everything. This was of course a lie as he received a text message demanding the money. Actress Sue previously opened up about how "frightened" she was to take on the dementia storyline. She told the Mirror: 'I was a little bit frightened. It was a lot of information to process, because it's not like a drama series where you might be doing it for six weeks. This is playing someone with dementia for one, two, three years. Last year, Metro exclusively revealed that the iconic character was set to be diagnosed with young-onset dementia. The storyline divided fans – who were pleased that Sue was finally being given her place in the spotlight – but furious that Debbie would ultimately be killed off. Despite the overwhelming number of viewers opposing the plot, it was officially confirmed in January, and within a matter of weeks the character began to suffer memory loss. Her condition was then officially confirmed by a private doctor, with only her younger brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) present. She's since concealed it from all of her family, and ended her relationship with partner Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) for fears he would have to one day become her carer. She also felt like brother Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) was already going through enough, following his cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy. In upcoming scenes, she suffers another setback. When she arrives at her Chariot Square Hotel and spots Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) at the bar, she challenges him for drinking underage. Debbie's behaviour quickly becomes erratic, and she smashes a glass on the bar. Next week in Coronation Street, a heartbreaking secret will be revealed as Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) finally tells the rest of her family that she has dementia. Debbie's brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) is the only person who knows about her health at the moment, but a collapse at Speed Daal changes everything. Also in Weatherfield, Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) makes a mistake when she leaves a troubled teen alone, while Sally (Sally Dynevor) and Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) take a risk and report a neighbour to social services. Brody (Ryan Mulvey) attempts to wind Daniel (Rob Mallard) up and spills his drink over his work, so Lisa threatens to arrest him for harassment. When Carla (Alison King) pops by, she finds Lisa putting Brody in handcuffs. At the station, Brody refuses to explain what the bottle of pills he's got in his pocket are for. Alone in his cell, Brody calls out to Lisa that he needs his medication but she heads off, believing he's just trying to wind her up again. Brody then suffers a seizure. Meanwhile, Sally shares her concerns about Lou's (Farrell Hegarty) children with Tim and reckons they should speak to social services. Also, Maria (Samia Longchambon) returns from the police station and tells Gary (Mikey North) that she's been released pending further investigation. When she finds Lou, Maria rails at her for making the police report, but Lou says it wasn't her. Later, Lou calls to see Gary and they share a beer together. Elsewhere on the cobbles, Todd (Gareth Pierce) decides to get drunk after seeing Theo's (James Cartwright) family picture. In the pub, Sean (Antony Cotton) checks the dating app on his phone, and is shocked to find a picture of Theo on there. When James (Jason Callender) explains to Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown) that Laila kept him up most of the night, she offers to take over. Later, Daniel tells Dee-Dee that she should talk to Amy (Elle Mulvaney) about doing a slot on student radio about black women's maternity experiences. At the Rovers' Drag Night, Theo replies to another of Millie's numerous texts. He eventually gets settled into the evening, but is shocked when Sean lets slip that Todd and Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) used to be together. When Todd spots Theo's phone on the table, he puts it onto airplane mode, leaving Theo to believe that Millie got bored of texting him. As Theo bonds with Billy, they decide to swap numbers but as he reaches for his device, Theo realises it's on airplane mode. He changes it back, and realises Danielle (Natalie Anderson) has been trying to call because Millie is in hospital, leaving him furious at Todd. At the Chariot Square Hotel, Debbie and Bernie (Jane Hazelgrove) find Brody enjoying a drink with a mate. When the youngster fails to provide ID, Debbie loses her temper and smashes his drink on the bar. Also, Dee-Dee realises that she'll have to take Laila for her vaccinations on her own. After the appointment, Dee-Dee admits to Michael that she found the whole experience emotional. During a chat with Daniel, Dee-Dee wonders if she's mentally strong enough to do Amy's radio interview. Elsewhere, just as he leaves for his chemo session, Kevin (Michael Le Vell) spots an awkward glance between Abi (Sally Carman) and Carl (Jonathan Howard). At the café, Bernie realises Debbie has forgotten to pay for her order. Coronation Street's Debbie breaks down as she receives life-changing diagnosis
Debbie Webster's (Sue Devaney) whole world turned upside down in tonight's Coronation Street when she was officially diagnosed with vascular dementia. The soap icon had noticed signs that something wasn't quite right and booked an appointment with a doctor a few weeks ago. Following their discussion, he referred her to a neurologist for further tests, believing that her symptoms could be a sign of dementia. Debbie's world came crashing down as the neurologist confirmed the doctor's suspicions, before explaining that there was no medication to treat the illness. Instead, the neurologist told Debbie to keep on top of her cardiovascular health before sending her on her way with a stark warning not to look up the life expectancy online. Outside the hospital, Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) urged her to share the news with the rest of their family, like the leaflet she'd been given suggested, but Debbie made it clear that she wasn't ready to tell them yet. She told Carl she needed some time to think, and spent a while longer sitting alone in the car park. It was there that she was approached by a distressed and confused woman, who was unable to recognise her daughter. The daughter thanked Debbie for her kindness, before revealing that the woman has vascular dementia, leaving Debbie horrified. Terrified Debbie soon returned to the Chariot Square Hotel, where Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) excitedly told her that he'd put in an offer for them to buy No.6, and it had been accepted. However, Debbie revealed that she wasn't going to move with him, and broke off the engagement, claiming that she didn't love him anymore. In reality, she just wanted to protect him from her illness, but he didn't know this.
