Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve to direct next James Bond film

Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios has announced.
The untitled film will be the first since the studio took creative reins of the storied film franchise after decades of control by the Broccoli family.
Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman had maintained that before the next Bond was cast, they would first develop a screenplay and find a director.
Now, they have one of the most respected blockbuster-makers in Hollywood, who is coming off a pair of widely acclaimed "Dune" films.
Villeneuve has also been nominated for the Oscars four times, won seven Canadian Screen Awards, five British Academy Film Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards.
In a statement, the 57-year-old French Canadian filmmaker said he grew up watching Bond movies.
"I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory," Villeneuve said.
"I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour."
Since taking creative control of Bond in February, Amazon MGM has worked quickly to get the next movie going.
The studio is also trying to win over fans sceptical of the new corporate leadership and those fearful of future spin-offs.
"James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers," said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
Villeneuve beat out a field of directors floated for the movie, including Edward Berger (Conclave), Paul King (Paddington 2), Edgar Wright (Baby Driver), and Jonathan Nolan, co-creator of Westworld and brother to Christopher Nolan.
"Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy," said Pascal and Heyman.
"It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it's ours, too."
No release date has yet been announced for the next Bond movie.
Villeneuve will shoot the third Dune film this summer. If production on Bond began next year, a release sometime in 2027 would be likely.
Villeneuve's first two Dune films have together surpassed $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) in box office worldwide and been nominated for a combined 15 Academy Awards, winning seven.
His other films include Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, Enemy, and Incendies.
Amazon bought MGM Studios in 2022 for $US8.5 billion, but did not gain creative control of the studio's most prized asset until this year.
Until this film, every Bond director has been hand-picked by the Broccolis.

‘The Simpsons' producer breaks silence on Marge Simpson's shocking death after fan backlash

'The Simpsons' executive producer Matt Selman has spoken out about the surprising decision to 'kill off' Marge Simpson during a flashforward scene in the show's Season 36 finale. Although the move caused major controversy within the hit cartoon's loyal fanbase, Selman slammed the backlash and claimed that it was 'ridiculous', The NY Post reports. 'Obviously, since 'The Simpsons' future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they're all different every time,' he told Variety during an interview published on Thursday, June 26. 'Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago,' Selman, 53, added. ''The Simpsons' doesn't even have canon!' The episode in question, titled 'Estranger Things' and which aired on May 18, focuses on siblings Bart and Lisa Simpson as they slowly grow apart after they stop watching 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show' together. After a 35-year time jump, the audience learns that Marge has died, Bart and Lisa are estranged, and Homer Simpson, the family's dad, is living in a retirement home. A short scene from Marge's funeral shows Homer in tears while the rest of the Simpsons family stands around him. At the end of the Season 36 finale, Marge watches from Heaven as Bart and Lisa save their dad from the retirement home and reconnect over a reboot of 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show.' 'I'm so happy my kids are close again,' the Simpsons family matriarch says. It is then revealed that Marge met and married Beatles superstar Ringo Starr while in Heaven. But viewers were not happy to learn that the show's creators 'killed off' Marge Simpson, and many took to social media to express their shock and outrage. 'I haven't even watched The Simpsons in 10+ years but they really killed MARGE?!' one person wrote on X after the episode aired. 'What's this I'm hearing they killed Marge Simpson off?' another fan added. 'Marge Simpson is dead?' a third critic commented. 'Utter woke nonsense!' Surprisingly, Selman welcomed the backlash and claimed that it was further proof that 'The Simpsons' and its beloved characters are still relevant after 36 years on TV. 'I guess this speaks to the fact that people care about Marge,' he told Variety. 'At the end of the day, it's probably good for business even when these ridiculous, misleading stories go viral!' 'The Simpsons,' which premiered on Fox in 1989, remains the longest-running animated show on television. Fox renewed the show, which has won 37 Emmys, for four more seasons in April.

‘Absurd': Prince William ‘won't let Prince Harry's kids become working royals'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's two young children won't have royal roles once Prince William becomes king. The claim is being made by several royal experts who noted that the Prince of Wales has been preparing for his future role as monarch while supporting his father, King Charles, who has cancer. 'It's utterly absurd for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to believe their children might one day choose to become working royals,' Kinsey Schofield, host of the To Di for Daily podcast, told Fox News Digital. 'That kind of entitlement isn't just wishful thinking — it borders on delusion,' she claimed. 'These are American children who've been raised oceans away from the monarchy, with no exposure to the customs, culture, or continuity that define royal life.' 'Harry closed that door himself the moment he boarded Tyler Perry's private jet and handed over his life story to a ghostwriter for Spare,' Schofield added. Schofield's statements came shortly after it was suggested in recent reports that Harry, 40, wanted to keep HRH titles for his children – or His and Her Royal Highness – so that they can decide for themselves whether they want to be working royals when they grow up. However, The Times U.K. reported that 'under the next reign, roles for Archie and Lili as working royals are unlikely.' Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are raising their children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, in California. Fox News Digital reached out to Kensington Palace and Archewell, which handles the offices for the duke and duchess, for comment. 'Prince William will not be thinking of giving the Sussex children formal future royal roles — ludicrous!' British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital. 'The children are being raised in America and, as I understand, do not have any understanding of the British royal family,' she explained. 'They will not have received the guidance to fit into royal life and royal expectations should not even be a thought … And why would Harry and Meghan want this for their children anyway? They stepped down as working royals, painted the British royal family in the most aberrant light, and ran as far away from them as possible!' Royal experts previously told Fox News Digital that Harry and William are not on speaking terms. Their relationship deteriorated following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to step back as senior royals in 2020 and move to California. Since their royal exit, the couple has aired their grievances in interviews and documentaries. Harry's explosive 2023 memoir 'Spare,' featuring embarrassing details about the House of Windsor, only made things worse. In May, Harry told the BBC that he wanted to reconcile with his family but his father, 76, wouldn't speak to him. According to The Times, Harry's pleas 'did little to thaw the family freeze.' Sources told the outlet that William's attitude towards his brother had shifted significantly – to 'indifference.' 'Where he once raged at his brother's outbursts — after the publication of Spare, a friend told me that though he was determined not to publicly respond even though 'inside he's burning' — the anger has subsided to indifference,' wrote royal editor Roya Nikkhah. 'A friend tells me: 'What has struck me the most recently is that he just doesn't mention it at all. It used to be that the family stuff was taking up a lot of space in his head, it was a very close relationship and he was very upset. But he's not letting it get to him at all anymore. It is a change. It's sad, but it's a much healthier space for him to be at,'' she shared.

Brian Campeau's country-tinged left turn, and Erik Satie—from the sublime to the surreal

Brian Campeau Presents Jo Dellin And The Bone Spurs is the latest album from the Canadian-born, Melbourne-based singer songwriter. Reinventing his sound with each record, the music here forays into country and bluegrass, with songs of love and loss punctuated by fiddle, pedal steel guitar and… yodelling. Brian is in The Music Show studio to perform two songs from the album live and talk about his endless musical flexibility. And on the 100th anniversary of his death, Andy remembers Erik Satie, composer of delicate, contemplative piano works, and 'obscene' operas. A true eccentric, his personal quirks (such as keeping two broken pianos on top of each other in his flat, one filled to the brim with unopened mail) paint a complicated picture when set alongside his meditative, introspective Gnossiennes and Gymnopédies. Pianist and conductor Reinbert De Leeuw speaks about the unique challenges of performing them, in an interview from The Music Show archives. Plus, hear new music from jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson, and The Rolling Stones pay tribute to 'the king of zydeco' Clifton Chenier.
