Observer06-05-2025

MUSCAT, MAY 6
In a key step toward advancing Oman's clean energy ambitions, the fieldwork phase of an offshore geotechnical investigation has been successfully completed for a major green ammonia plant in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD).
Finalised in April 2025, the fieldwork included deep and shallow borehole drilling, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), and detailed assessments of pipeline routes and marine anchoring points. These investigations provide the technical foundation for the design and construction of the green ammonia facility, a strategic project aligned with Oman Vision 2040's goals for economic diversification and renewable energy leadership.
In a statement, Darkocean Geostar UAE, the company leading the survey efforts, said the work equips developers and regulators with the essential data needed to support safe and sustainable engineering decisions for the project.
'This marks a critical milestone in the development of the Duqm ammonia plant,' said Dr Surya Kumar Ippenta, PMP, Managing Director of Darkocean Geostar. 'Our work provides stakeholders with the data needed to advance Oman's sustainable industrial future.'
Duqm is rapidly positioning itself as a key hub in Oman's green energy value chain, attracting global attention for its strategic port access, industrial infrastructure, and growing cluster of hydrogen and ammonia ventures. The upcoming ammonia plant is expected to utilise green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources, converting it into ammonia for export to global markets seeking low-carbon fuel alternatives.
Alongside the geotechnical surveys, Darkocean Geostar is currently conducting oceanographic data collection at the project site. This next phase will provide crucial insights into marine currents, sediment movement, and environmental dynamics—information necessary for infrastructure planning and environmental compliance.
Industry observers emphasise the importance of such data in de-risking major infrastructure investments and expediting regulatory approvals. The timely completion of field investigations strengthens confidence among investors and project stakeholders involved in Oman's clean energy sector.
The Duqm SEZ, under the supervision of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), is a cornerstone of the Sultanate of Oman's strategy to become a regional leader in green fuels. With critical fieldwork now complete, the ammonia project is poised to advance into design, permitting, and construction, marking another step in Oman's transition toward a sustainable energy future.

Oman's GDP rises to RO 10.53 billion in Q1 2025

MUSCAT: Oman's gross domestic product (GDP) at current market prices reached RO 10.53 billion in the first quarter of 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 4.7 per cent compared to RO 10.056 billion in Q1 2024. According to preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, this growth was largely driven by non-oil activities, which grew by 4.1 per cent to reach RO 7.132 billion. Key contributors included service activities (RO 4.837 billion), industrial activities (RO 1.968 billion), and agriculture and fisheries (RO 326.6 million), the latter showing a robust 11.1 per cent growth. Oil activities also made a significant contribution, rising by 6.8 per cent overall to RO 3.706 billion. Although crude oil activity dropped by 7.5 per cent to RO 2.735 billion, this was offset by a substantial 89 per cent increase in natural gas activity, which added RO 970 million in value. The results reflect the Sultanate's continued push toward economic diversification while maintaining strong energy sector performance, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. — ONA

Building real investment trust in Oman: Beyond the headlines

Oman has made clear that investment is central to its future. Through Vision 2040, the country has set an ambitious goal: to grow a stronger, more diverse economy that creates jobs, brings in new technologies, and improves life for its people. To get there, we need strong private-sector participation, smart partnerships, and a steady flow of capital — both local and international. In the past few years, we've seen a real push to attract investment. Government entities, businesses, and media have all played a part. Large-scale projects — some worth hundreds of millions of rials — are being announced with confidence. These stories capture attention, show momentum, and send a positive signal about Oman's economic outlook. But behind every announcement, there's an important question: Are we delivering what we're promising? This isn't about doubt — it's about alignment. Not all projects that are announced are fully funded yet. Sometimes, the companies involved are still building their operational capacity. Other times, the investment figure is a long-term estimate, not something immediately available. That's fine — many successful economies do this. What matters is how clearly we explain the difference. WHAT INVESTORS (AND CITIZENS) REALLY WANT? Investors — especially experienced ones — are not just impressed by big numbers. They're looking for reliable partners, transparent systems, and projects that actually move forward on schedule. Citizens, too, want to see how these investments improve livelihoods, create opportunities, and deliver on national goals. That's why it's time to make transparency a core part of how we talk about investment in Oman. Simple steps can make a big difference. For example: • Sharing the source of financing and the project timeline. • Clarifying whether an agreement is preliminary or final. • Publishing regular updates on major projects. When people see clear information, trust grows. When trust grows, capital follows. GOOD PROGRESS — AND ROOM TO IMPROVE To be fair, Oman has made important progress. Platforms like 'Invest Easy' have improved the investor experience. Laws are more open. Institutions are modernising. The vision is clear. But some challenges remain. Investors still report facing delays or needing to coordinate with multiple government bodies to get started. More integration and data-sharing between agencies would help. A central dashboard that tracks all major projects — their stage, status, and impact — could be a game-changer. LET'S FOCUS ON IMPACT, NOT JUST SIZE Often, the success of an investment is judged by the amount of money announced. But a smaller project that delivers real results — jobs, skills, exports — can be just as valuable. We should highlight stories of real impact, not just large numbers. The goal isn't just to say 'Oman is open for business' — it's to show how business is actually being done here, and done well. A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY Telling the right investment story isn't only the job of the government. It's a shared responsibility — between ministries, companies, media, and citizens. We all have a role in shaping how Oman is perceived by the world. Let's aim for a national conversation on investment that's realistic, honest, and inspiring. One where the numbers are accurate, the expectations are managed, and the projects are seen through to the end. Oman has everything it needs to become a trusted investment hub: stability, leadership, vision, and talent. Now it's time to match our communication with our strengths — and turn headlines into long-term value. QASIM AL MAASHANI The writer is the head of business and politics section at Oman Observer.

Oman's first green ammonia project begins receiving key cargo

MUSCAT, JUNE 27 Project cargo has begun arriving at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) for Oman's first green hydrogen and ammonia venture — a landmark initiative set to kickstart the Sultanate of Oman's gigawatt-scale green energy industry. Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Company SAOC (GHC), a wholly owned subsidiary of India-based renewable energy developer ACME Group, is developing the green ammonia plant with an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). The project, estimated at around $750 million, is designed for phased expansion to 1.1 million tpa. Last week, Khimji Ramdas Shipping announced the successful discharge and inland delivery of the first major consignment of project cargo from the Port of Duqm to the plant site. The shipment comprised 14 packages of oversized equipment, including a single unit weighing 120 metric tonnes. This shipment marks the first in a series of heavy cargo deliveries expected at Port of Duqm in the run-up to the plant's scheduled commissioning in Q1 2027. Forthcoming consignments will include solar PV modules, trackers and electrolysers — key components already under contract as part of the project's broader supply chain. Earlier this month, GameChange Solar, a global leader in solar tracking systems, announced a deal to supply its Genius Tracker technology for a 450 MWp solar installation that will generate renewable electricity for the project. The 1P single-row tracker system is engineered to withstand high winds and extreme weather conditions, making it suitable for Al Duqm's coastal environment. Leading Chinese manufacturer Sungrow Hydrogen revealed it had been contracted to supply multiple sets of 1000 Nm³/h alkaline electrolysis systems, along with flexible green hydrogen production solutions. Deliveries are expected to be completed by end-2025. Fellow Chinese company Shuangliang Hydrogen has also secured a contract to supply hydrogen production equipment for the same project, with delivery similarly due by year-end. In parallel, UAE-based DarkOcen Geostar recently completed the fieldwork phase of an offshore geotechnical investigation at SEZAD. The campaign included borehole drilling, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and evaluations of pipeline corridors and marine anchor points to support the development of future marine infrastructure for the ammonia plant. The Duqm green ammonia project is one of nine large-scale green hydrogen initiatives planned for development across Oman's Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates over the next decade. These projects collectively represent investments exceeding $40 billion. The timely delivery and execution of the Duqm plant is seen as pivotal to unlocking Oman's broader hydrogen strategy. As part of a long-term offtake agreement signed last year, Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara will lift the full annual output from the first phase — 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia — reinforcing the project's strong commercial foundation.
