Kate Forbes to step down at next Holyrood election
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes has said she will not stand at next year's Holyrood election. In a post on social media, the MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch said that after "careful thought" over Summer she had "decided not to seek re-election" but would "continue to serve the First Minister, the Government and my constituents to the best of my ability until May 2026." In a letter to the First Minister, Ms Forbes — whose daughter Naomi turns three this month — said she did not want to "miss any more of the precious early years of family life." The announcement comes just two days before the Deputy First Minister is due to be interviewed on stage at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of The Herald's Unspun Live series. Ms Forbes had often been talked about as a potential leader of the SNP. She said: "It has been an incredible privilege to serve the people of the Highlands since 2016 as the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch. "In that time, I have also been grateful for the opportunity to serve in Government, initially as Minister for Public Finance, then as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and more recently as Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Gaelic. "I am in no doubt about the scale of my duties as a local representative, an activist and campaigner, and a Government Minister. "Quite rightly this job entails long days far from home, constant attention and total dedication. As I consider the upcoming election and the prospects of another term, I have concluded that I do not wish to seek re-election and miss any more of the precious early years of family life. "I remain wholly supportive of you today just as when I backed you to be Leader of the SNP and First Minister of Scotland, and I will continue to serve my constituents and the public with diligence over the next year. "I look forward to campaigning for the SNP at the next election, to return you as First Minister for another term and lead Scotland to independence." Ms Forbes is the 36th MSP to announce they won't be standing at next year's election. Responding to the announcement, John Swinney paid tribute to Ms Forbes "for her invaluable contribution to public life over the last ten years." He tweeted: "The challenges of frontline politics are considerable, and I understand the decision she has made although I wish it was not the case. "I am pleased that Kate will continue to serve in my government and to make a significant contribution to the work of the Scottish National Party. Tesla's July China-made EV sales fall 8.4%
BEIJING (Reuters) -Tesla's sales of China-made electric vehicles in July fell 8.4% from a year earlier, reversing a mild increase in June, in the face of rising competition from rivals offering lower-priced new models. Deliveries of Tesla's China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, including exports to Europe and other markets, reached 67,886 units last month, down 5.2% from June, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed on Monday. Its biggest Chinese rival BYD, with its Ocean and Dynasty lineups of EVs and plug-in hybrids, maintained almost flat global passenger car sales at 341,300 vehicles in July.

Italy fines fast-fashion giant Shein for 'green' claims
Italy's competition watchdog said Monday it has fined the company responsible for Shein's websites in Europe one million euros ($1.15 million) for false and confusing claims about the e-commerce giant's efforts to be environmentally "green". The AGCM watchdog accuses the China-founded fast-fashion colossal of having "adopted a misleading communication strategy regarding the characteristics and environmental impact of its clothing products". The fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services Co. Ltd, the company responsible for managing Shein's product trading websites in Europe, the authority said in a statement. The AGCM accused it of "misleading and/or deceptive environmental messages and claims... in the promotion and sale of Shein-branded clothing products". These were "in some instances, vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in others, misleading or omissive". In particular, claims about the recyclability of products "were found to be either false or at least confusing", it said. Consumers could easily be led to believe Shein products were made exclusively from sustainable materials and fully recyclable, "a statement which, given the fibres used and current recycling systems, does not reflect reality". The AGCM also took issue with the retailer's claims it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. These "vague" pledges by a company which has seen phenomenal growth in recent years were "contradicted by an actual increase in Shein's greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 and 2024", it said. In a statement to AFP, Shein said it had "cooperated fully" with the watchdog's investigation and "took immediate action" to address the concerns, saying all environmental claims on the website were now "clear, specific and compliant with regulations". Environmentalists have long warned of the damage wreaked by the fast-fashion sector's wasteful trend of mass producing low-cost clothes that are quickly thrown away.
