Caste Census Key to Social Justice, Says Youth Welfare President Khalid Naveed
Mahabubnagar: Social activist Khalid Naveed, President of Youth Welfare Mahabubnagar, has welcomed the proposed national caste census by the central government as a crucial step towards ensuring social justice and equality in India.
In a press statement, he emphasized that for decades, caste data collection has been limited to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, leaving Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and other marginalized communities underrepresented in policymaking.
'The caste census will provide accurate socio-economic data, allowing the government to better target welfare schemes and reservations,' Naveed stated. He noted that existing programs often fail to reach the most disadvantaged due to intersecting inequalities of caste, gender, geography, and poverty.
Following the release of Bihar's caste census in 2023, which revealed that OBCs and Extremely Backward Classes made up over 63% of the state's population, several states including Telangana initiated similar surveys. This created momentum for a nationwide caste census, now backed by the Central Government—a significant policy shift after 70 years.
Naveed also referenced the 1980 Mandal Commission, which advocated for OBC reservations but lacked updated caste data. Similarly, the 2011 Socio-Economic and Caste Census was never fully published, drawing criticism from scholars and activists.
While critics argue the census might deepen caste divisions, Naveed stressed that a transparent and accurate caste enumeration would promote fair representation, help recalibrate reservation policies, and ensure that affirmative action reaches those who need it most.

"There's no justifiable reason to deny reservation to Jats in Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Deeg when their socio-economic condition is no different from Jats in other parts of the country," she said. "Even my own community (Scheduled Castes) supports this demand," she added. Jat leaders reiterated that the community is united on the issue and prepared to take their movement forward if no concrete steps are taken by the govt within the given timeframe. In Rajasthan, Jats are included under the 21% reservation for OBC. However, those domiciled in Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Deeg districts are excluded from the central OBC reservation scheme.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Reiterating his plan to carry out a march in Mumbai on Aug 29, quota activist Manoj Jarange on Sunday said the upcoming agitation would be a "decisive fight" in securing the desired reservation for the Maratha community from the OBC category. "The agitation in Mumbai will not be to press for our demand anymore, but to ensure the decision is taken by the govt in our favour at any cost," he said. Jarange, at a meeting with his supporters at Antarwali Sarathi from Jalna district, appealed to the Maratha community to register their participation in the statewide march planned in Mumbai. "We have to enter the battlefield now and ensure victory. We have to prepare so that no one can deny our demands," he said, addressing his supporters. The community is fighting for the cause for the last two years and the quota battle has reached its final stage now, he said. The proposed march is to commence from Antarwali Sarathi on Aug 27 and reach Mumbai on Aug 29. "All the people of Mumbai, including migrants, served us in the past during our last agitation. Even if it is the rainy season, please come to drop me off in Mumbai. I will take care of the next things.
