India Today06-05-2025
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday appealed to the people of the state to embrace the Tamil language more consciously in everyday life, especially while naming children and businesses."Whenever I attend a marriage function, I request the couple to keep a beautiful Tamil name for their (future) baby," Stalin said at an event."We are Tamils living in Tamil Nadu, yet we often choose North Indian or English names. I urge people to avoid that and give their children Tamil names," he added.advertisement
Extending the appeal to local vendors, he added, "You all consider your shops as your children. If they have English names, please replace them with Tamil ones. Make unique Tamil words your shop's identity. Even if a name is in English, at least write it in Tamil."Speaking of Tamil language and identity, a similar note was struck a month ago during a rally in Rameshwaram, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had touched upon the importance of Tamil pride.Referring to letters he received from Tamil Nadu leaders, he had noted that none were signed in Tamil, despite their stated pride in the language. "If we are proud of Tamil, then I would request everyone to at least sign their name in Tamil," PM Modi had said.Must Watch

Devendra Fadnavis to inaugurate Kusumagaraj Marathi language centre; lay foundation stone of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj special centre

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other ministers of the Maharashtra cabinet will be in JNU on Thursday evening to inaugurate the Kusumagraj Special Centre for Marathi Language, Literature and Culture. The language centre has been named after renowned poet and Jnanpith awardee Kusumagraj, and will focus on Marathi language, literature and cultural traditions. The Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Centre for Security and Strategic Studies, which will be under the School of International Studies. It will explore indigenous strategic traditions based on the Maratha empire. The centre is envisioned to become a hub for military history, strategy and future policy development rooted in India's past. The Kusumagraj centre will offer postgraduate and certificate-level programmes to promote multilingualism and cultural understanding. 'It will offer MA in Marathi and certificate courses to go with the NEP for non-Marathi speakers like those who speak Tamil. A lot of students from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have opted for Tamil and there are many who speak Tamil whenever we have functions. This is encouraging because this will unite India and make people more sensitive to other languages of the country. The present state government is giving importance to Marathi, which has been declared by the Centre as one of the classical languages, also because Marathi is a language of great repute and know for its literature,' JNU's VC Santishree Pandit told reporters recently. The State government has announced the funds of ₹10 Crore for each centre. The Marathi centre was first announced in the year 2007 by then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Maharashtra government wants to construct an equestrian statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inside the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University. 'We have held preliminary talks with the Vice Chancellor of the University. She is positive about it. A statue of our most revered king in the renowned university will mean spreading the importance of his valour and about Maratha history on a national platform which is holds such a key position in the academic world,' Maharashtra minister Uday Samant told The Hindu. 'We have sought land from JNU for the project. Once the land is allotted, the State government will construct the statue in the campus. There is an in-principle approval for the State government's proposal,' Mr Samant said.

Rajendra Chola birth anniversary fete begins at Ariyalur; PM to attend finale on July 27

ARIYALUR/CHENNAI: The birth anniversary celebrations of Chola emperor Rajendra I (Aadi Thiruvathirai festival) commenced on Wednesday at the historic Brihadeeswarar temple in Gangaikondacholapuram in Ariyalur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest for the grand finale of the festival scheduled for July 27, announced the union government. At an event to mark the commencement of the festival, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who also holds the archaeology portfolio, said the DMK government in 2021 declared Aadi Thiruvathirai as Rajendra Chola's official birth anniversary based on historical research. He credited historian Kudavayil Balasubramanian for identifying, through detailed epigraphic studies, that Rajendra Chola was born in the Thiruvathirai star of the Tamil month of Aadi, and not in Margazhi as previously believed. Transport Minister SS Sivasankar, who was present on the occasion, said, 'When Rajendra Chola designed the temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, he intentionally built the tower shorter than that of Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar temple, out of respect for his father Rajaraja Chola. He didn't want to be seen as a son who surpassed his father. In today's political scenario, many must reflect on this Chola message.' Tourism Minister K Ramachandran, Information and Publicity Minister MP Saminathan, and VCK leader Thirumavalavan also took part in the event. Meanwhile, a release said Kalakshetra Foundation will stage a special Bharatanatyam group recital, followed by Devaram Thirumurai chanting by traditional Othuvars during the festival. A booklet on Devaram hymns, published by the Sahitya Akademi, will be formally released. The festival will conclude with a musical presentation by music maestro Ilaiyaraaja and his troupe. The release said objectives of the festival include highlighting the profound philosophical roots of Shaiva Siddhanta and the role of Tamil in its dissemination, honouring the contributions of the Nayanmars to the spiritual fabric of Tamil culture, and celebrating the extraordinary legacy of Rajendra Chola I and the Chola dynasty.
