Donald Trump to Tim Cook: Don't 'make in India'
US President Donald Trump has reportedly asked Apple CEO Tim Cook to stop expanding iPhone production in India and increase manufacturing in the United States instead. During a state visit to Qatar, Trump revealed he had "a little problem with Tim Cook" regarding Apple's growing manufacturing presence in India. "I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday," Trump said of his conversation with the Apple chief executive officer in Qatar.

Microsoft announces job cuts, to lay off 6,000 employees
Microsoft has announced that it will lay off 3% of its global workforce, affecting thousands of employees across all levels, teams, and geographies, amounting to over 6,000 employees. The cuts at the Redmond giant, which employed 228,000 people as of last June, aim to reduce management layers and streamline operations.

Government sends notice to Flipkart, Amazon for selling Pakistani flags
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued notices to e-commerce platforms in India including Amazon India, Flipkart, Ubuy India, Etsy, The Flag Company, and The Flag Corporation over the sale of Pakistani national flags and related merchandise. In a post on Twitter (now X), the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi said that the ministry has directed ecommerce companies to immediately take down such listings, calling the sale 'insensitive' and a violation of national sentiment.

RayBan Meta Glasses arrive in India, price starts at Rs 29,990
Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses officially entered the Indian market, with nationwide availability set for May 19. The AI-powered eyewear, priced starting at Rs 29,900, will be sold through Ray-Ban.com and select optical retailers across the country. The glasses feature Meta AI integration, allowing users to make hands-free queries, stream media, and handle communications through voice commands.

Amazon cuts jobs in devices division
Amazon has reportedly fired 100 employees within its Devices and Services division. According to a report by Reuters, the company said the jobs represented a small number of the total for the unit and were part of its regular business review. The Devices and Services unit is responsible for developing popular hardware products such as the Echo smart speakers, Fire TV devices, and Ring security systems. To recall, Amazon also laid off some employees from Alexa-related jobs in 2023.

For nearly two decades, smartphones have all worked pretty much the same, whether you bought an Apple iPhone or a smartphone running Google 's Android system: You have a grid of colorful apps that you tap on. But this year, Apple and Google are finally taking separate next phone operating system arriving this fall, iOS 26, includes a transparent aesthetic mimicking the look of glass and making apps and buttons blend in with content on the screen. Google is doing the opposite with its newly released operating system, Android 16, which emphasizes brighter, punchier are just cosmetic changes that may represent the beginning of a greater split between iOS and Android. Google is also leaning heavily into integrating Gemini , its AI chatbot, to automate tasks like writing emails, editing photos and creating shopping lists. In contrast, Apple has released a small set of AI features and has postponed the debut of a revamped version of Siri because of technical challenges, so the company is focusing on making its software interface look this means for you, the consumer, is that your technology experience may differ drastically depending on which type of phone you buy in the coming years. For example, if you take a screenshot of a website with the date and time for a concert event, a suggestion to add the concert to your calendar will appear. Or if you take a screenshot of a handbag you are shopping for, you can tap a button to do a web search for similar-looking handbags. (That's similar to Google's Circle to Search tool, which lets Android users draw circles around objects to do image-based searches. Many users have called the feature a gimmick because it is seldom useful.)As for Siri, Apple was supposed to release an overhauled version of its virtual assistant with AI to rival Google's Gemini this spring, but those plans have been postponed indefinitely after internal testing found that it was inaccurate on nearly a third of its requests. For now, users can talk to the old-school Siri and redirect some requests to OpenAI's popular chatbot, ChatGPT.(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft , claiming copyright infringement of news content related to AI systems. Rupee falls 20 paise to close at 86.12 against US dollar
Mumbai, Jul 17 (PTI) The rupee declined 20 paise to settle at 86.12 against the US dollar on Thursday amid a stronger greenback, outflow of foreign funds and volatile global crude oil prices. Selling trend in the domestic equity markets and uncertainties over the outcome of the ongoing India-US trade talks further pressured the rupee, according to forex traders. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.93 against the US dollar and traded in the range of 85.80-86.13 during the day before settling at 86.12, down 20 from its previous close. The rupee had declined 16 paise against the US dollar to close at 85.92 on Wednesday. 'The strong dollar index kept rupee weak while fall in Asian currencies also did not help as rupee continued to depreciate towards 86 levels. Near-term premiums rose on the VRRR auctions by the RBI while one-year premiums were generally constant," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. 'For tomorrow (Friday) we expect the range of 85.75 to 86.25 to continue with trade deals are the only things to be watched for," he said. An Indian commerce ministry team is in Washington for another round of talks on the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement. The four-day talks, which started on Monday, are expected to conclude on Thursday. US President Donald Trump has said the proposed trade deal with India would be on the lines of what America has finalised with Indonesia on Tuesday. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was marginally down by 0.06 per cent to USD 68.48 per barrel in futures trade. Pakistan piggybacks on Trump's quad visit to press for stopover in Islamabad
Donald Trump TOI correspondent from Washington: A political and diplomatic dogfight is underway over a prospective visit to Pakistan by US President Donald Trump en route to the Quad summit in India in September amid a gradual recalibration of ties in the region. Pakistani business leaders and influencers are working overtime to convince the White House of a Trump visit after pulling off a coup by arranging a luncheon meeting last month for the country's army chief Asim Munir with the US President. Munir charmed Trump by endorsing him for a Nobel Peace Prize, playing up to his craving for one, and the Pakistanis are now promising the US President more honors and trade access if he visits, despite having thrown itself at China's feet for survival. Although the White House has not confirmed Trump's Quad attendance given New Delhi is yet to nail the dates -- which also depends on the leaders of Japan and Australia -- Pakistan's excitable media broadcast that the US President would visit Pakistan on September 18, before retracting the report because Trump will be on a state visit to the UK from September 17-19. He has just delivered a tariff shock to Japan and also riled up Australia, while India has proved to be a tough negotiator, frustrating his trade boffins attempts to strong-arm New Delhi into a quick deal. In fact, Trump's fetish for tariffs and his fixation on trade deals puts a question mark over the strategic salience of the Quad even as long-time allies and partners adjust to his mercurial approach. According to some diplomats, India itself may have to reassess its approach to Trump-era Washington after a rosy-eyed view of long-term strategic ties with the US. They acknowledge that Trump's response during his second term to the Pakistani outreach – driven more by opportunism than any strategic vision – clearly caught India off guard. New Delhi resents the re-hyphenation that would be implicit in such a two-fer, but has no way of thwarting it. If Trump does visit Pakistan, it will be the first US Presidential trip to the country in nearly two decades after George W Bush layover in 2006. Bush stopped by in Islamabad for a few hours under a tight security blanket on his way back from a three-day visit to New Delhi, talking up counter-terrorism cooperation with Pakistan while rejecting its pleas for a nuclear deal similar to the one he forged with India. Presidents Obama and Biden both disdained even a stopover while Trump himself trashed Pakistan during his first term, accusing it of "nothing but lies & deceit" and providing "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan." Pakistan is now promising to turn itself into a safe haven for US businesses promoted by Trump associates -- including transforming Islamabad into the "crypto capital of South Asia" and a "global leader in the digital finance revolution,' -- to land a Presidential visit. During his first term, Trump is famously said to have complained about landing in Iraq and Afghanistan with the lights on Air Force One turned off (as a security measure), despite the US having spent billions on the countries. If the Pakistan stopover comes through, he may well insist on landing in full sight – to soak up the fanfare and flattery.
