Aadhar: Key To Digital India Identity And Governance

India.com5 days ago
For Ramu, a daily wage labourer from rural Bihar, it was a constant struggle when he landed in India's bustling economic capital, Mumbai. Devoid of Aadhar, Ramu was not able to open his bank account, thereby forcing him to keep his meagre income in cash all the time when he moved out of his house. To top it all, he was not able to purchase a motorcycle, which he thought he would use to keep himself mobile on the busy roads of Mumbai. Slowly, Ramu started facing a lot of difficulties when he went to the fair-price shop for his monthly ration, purchasing a SIM card, etc. All his visits to the government office were a big time ordeal, as he was met with the demand for furnishing a unique ID, which he did not possess, leaving him out of the essential services designed to support citizens like him.
Ramu is not an isolated case. There are many like him who might be facing a lot of difficulties in day-to-day life when it comes to Aadhar cards. Today, Aadhar has become a vital and the most important document for every Indian citizen Issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI),This 12-digit unique identification number, loaded with biometric data, has turned out to be a universal proof of identity and address across the nation.
Today, nobody in India could even think of doing without an Aadhar card as it has become an integral part of the human identity in the country. Its significance extends far beyond a mere document; it is the lynchpin for Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), ensuring government subsidies like pensions and LPG reach rightful beneficiaries directly, curtailing leakages and enhancing transparency.
Going a step forward, Aadhaar has been a vital part in driving financial inclusion, allowing millions of Indians to open bank accounts, get government subsidies, apply for loans, and get ration with the simplified "Know Your Customer" (KYC) processes.
Why Aadhaar Is So Important for Indians
Aadhaar is incredibly important for people in India. It does many vital jobs that have completely changed how we get government benefits and services from private companies.
Key Ways Aadhaar Helps Indians:
Aadhaar is crucial for the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) program. Every year, the Central Government provides subsidies for things like LPG cylinders, pensions and scholarships, which goes directly into the bank account of the individual. Without Aadhar, the individual can't access the important government schemes and subsidies.
Sarkari Job: In India, people eagerly pursue government jobs, where Aadhaar verification is mandatory for applications. These coveted positions offer stability and benefits, driving intense competition. Aadhaar ensures secure identity checks, streamlining the hiring process for various public sector roles
Aadhaar makes it simpler for millions to open bank accounts and use the banking services for their day-to-day financial needs. The banks perform "Know Your Customer" (KYC) process where Aadhar and the biometrics play a major role in deciding whether the person is eligible for the banking services. Aadhar is also important when one wants to use services like AePS and the UPI for digital payments.
Above all, Aadhaar is like a certificate that proves who you are and where you live. This means, that you do not have to carry lot of different documents when applying for the crucial things such as bank accounts, phone connection, passport. This is because the biometric system in Aadhar card uses your fingerprints and eye scans, which adds to an extra layer of security and helps prevent identity theft.
You'll find Aadhaar is essential for getting many government services, from health programs to education funds and utility connections. It makes these services quicker and more focused on what citizens need.
Because Aadhaar is unique and linked to your biometrics, it helps get rid of fake or duplicate identities from lists of people getting benefits. This saves the government a lot of money by making sure only those who deserve benefits actually get them.
Aadhaar gives people a digital identity they can carry anywhere and easily prove online. This lets them use online banking, store important documents in DigiLocker, and access many other online services smoothly.

Indian auto exports rise sharply as home market remains sluggish in June: Report

Domestic passenger vehicle sales declined by 7–8 per cent YoY in June 2025, driven by weaker performances from key players like Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Maruti Suzuki. But firms like Mahindra & Mahindra, JSW MG, and Toyota posted decent growth, which muted the general decline (Photo is representational) Check Offers The Indian automotive industry has sustained its growth momentum from the success of exports in its main segments- two-wheelers (2W), commercial vehicles (CV), and passenger vehicles (PV)- even as domestic sales have been more uneven, or mixed. According to a report released by Axis Securities for June 2025, the outstanding overseas demand continues to be a strong engine for growth, but homegrown consumption demonstrates different patterns for categories and manufacturers. Two-wheeler exports shine amid domestic slowdown The two-wheeler segment registered a marginal 2 per cent growth in overall wholesale volumes in June 2025. However, this uptick was almost entirely fueled by a striking 35 per cent year-on-year (YoY) rise in exports. Domestic sales, on the contrary, decreased by 3 per cent YoY, indicating a discord between the development of global and local markets. Also Read : Indian auto industry starts FY26 on mixed note: Domestic sales dip, exports see sharp rise The report also noted an increase in Q1FY26 two-wheeler exports of 22 per cent, while domestic volumes for the quarter were down by 6 per cent YoY. Axis Securities noted that the segment's outlook could improve on the back of several upside triggers such as a rural demand revival, new model launches, favourable fiscal policies, and restocking by manufacturers. Passenger vehicle sales dip but exports surge Domestic passenger vehicle sales declined by 7–8 per cent YoY in June 2025, driven by weaker performances from key players like Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Maruti Suzuki. But firms like Mahindra & Mahindra, JSW MG, and Toyota posted decent growth, which muted the general decline. In spite of the softness at home, exports in the segment continued to be a hope. Maruti Suzuki was the pace-setter with a 37 per cent increase in overseas sales, followed by Tata Motors (68 per cent), Hyundai (13 per cent), and Mahindra (36 per cent). As a result, PV exports are expected to sustain growth, while domestic volumes are projected to expand in the low-to-mid single-digit range in FY26. Also Read : Maruti Suzuki clocks 6 per cent sales decline in June 2025, exports cushion the blow CV segment flat The commercial vehicle segment saw a 2 per cent YoY dip in Q1FY26 wholesale volumes, largely due to declines from Tata Motors (-9 per cent) and flat performance from Ashok Leyland. Yet, VECV, M&M, and Maruti gained 9 per cent, 4 per cent, and 7 per cent respectively. Whereas Axis Securities has a conservative view of CVs—anticipating flat to low single-digit growth—it is expecting the bus sub-segment to drive hope in the face of increasing demand in public and institutional transportation. The report indicates that exporting markets are still likely to be the growth driver for India's auto space over the near term. Domestically, performance will depend on consumer attitudes, favourable trends in the rural economy, and regulatory support. With segments showing mixed trends, automakers may have to rethink strategies to sustain the momentum both in the domestic and export markets. PM Modi in Brazil for BRICS Summit, Trump tariffs likely in group's focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Sunday (Saturday evening local time) for the BRICS Summit 2025 in Rio de Janeiro after wrapping his Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago visits. Prime Minister Narendra has a packed agenda for the BRICS Summit 2025 in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.(AFP) This is the fourth leg of PM Modi's five-nation tour, which began on July 2. Modi then landed in Argentina for the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over five decades. Now he is in Brazil, from where he will head to Namibia to cap off his longest diplomatic tour yet. The BRICS summit will be held without the presence of the two big bloc leaders. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not attend the meeting this year. However, the annual summit has a packed agenda. PM Narendra Modi in Brazil: India's BRICS agenda PM Narendra Modi's first priority is that the BRICS bloc of nations calls out terrorism in clear terms. The BRICS declaration in Rio de Janeiro is expected to condemn the Pahalgam terror attack, which took 26 lives, mostly of tourists, in the Jammu and Kashmir resort town of Pahalgam on April 22. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the attack, targeting terror infrastructure in PoJK and Pakistan. Apart from that, the BRICS summit is expected to adopt a framework for climate finance, collaboration on artificial intelligence, and a new health initiative aimed at reducing disparities. India is also pushing for trade settlement in national currencies, which would reduce the global South's dependence on the US dollar. BRICS on Trump tariffs BRICS leaders' meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday is also expected to decry US President Donald Trump's "indiscriminate" trade tariffs, saying they are illegal and risk hurting the global economy. Emerging nations, which represent about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output, have united over "serious concerns" about US import tariffs, according to a draft summit statement reported by AFP. The draft summit declaration does not mention the United States or its president by name, but leaders gathering for talks on Sunday and Monday could amend it. "We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO (World Trade Organization) rules," AFP quoted the draft text. The draft text warned that such measures "threaten to further reduce global trade" and are "affecting the prospects for global economic development."

Govt initiatives drive India to become fourth most equal country

In yet another significant achievement for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, India's Gini Index now stands at 25.5, making it the fourth most equal country in the world, after the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Belarus, according to a World Bank report. The Gini Index is a simple yet powerful way to understand how equally income, wealth or consumption is distributed across households or individuals in a country. It ranges in value from 0 to 100. A score of 0 means perfect equality. A score of 100 means one person has all the income, wealth or consumption and others have none, hence absolute inequality. The higher the Gini Index, the more unequal the country. India's score is much lower than China's 35.7 and far lower than the United States, which stands at 41.8. It is also more equal than every G7 and G20 country, many of which are considered advanced economies. India is not only the world's fourth-largest economy; it is also one of the most equal societies today. This is a remarkable achievement for a country of its size and diversity. It reflects how India's economic progress is being shared more evenly across its population. Behind this success is a consistent policy focus on reducing poverty, expanding financial access, and delivering welfare support directly to those who need it most. According to the government, India's strong standing on the Gini Index is not a coincidence. 'It is closely linked to the country's sustained success in reducing poverty across both rural and urban regions. The Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief by the World Bank highlights this achievement as one of the most significant in recent years,' according to an official statement. According to the World Bank report, 171 million Indians have been lifted out of extreme poverty over the past decade. The share of people living on less than $2.15 a day, which was the global threshold for extreme poverty till June 2025, fell sharply from 16.2 per cent in 2011-12 to just 2.3 per cent in 2022-23. Under the World Bank's revised extreme poverty threshold of $3.00 per day, the 2022-23 poverty rate would be adjusted to 5.3 per cent. India's progress towards greater income equality is backed by a series of focused government initiatives. Some of the key schemes and initiatives are PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar and Digital Identity, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Ayushman Bharat, Stand-Up India, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), and PM Vishwakarma Yojana, among others. 'What sets India apart is its ability to balance economic reform with strong social protection. Targeted schemes like Jan Dhan, DBT, and Ayushman Bharat have helped close long-standing gaps. At the same time, programmes such as Stand-Up India and PM Vishwakarma Yojana are helping people create wealth and secure livelihoods on their own terms,' said the government.
