Pune: Students' unions protested on Saturday against
Savitribai Phule Pune University

Rahul Sasane, the president of the University Student Struggle Action Committee, said, "Many students went to attend the event, but were denied entry. Students are the fundamental and the most vital aspect of a university. The university holds this reputation because of the students. Yet, students were denied entry to this celebrationWe condemn this action of the university."
Higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil attended the event.
TOI's calls and messages to the SPPU registrar, pro vice-chancellor and vice-chancellor enquiring about the issue remained unanswered.

But when it comes to providing subsidised meals or accommodation to students, the university officials cite lack of funds.

The SPPU management was wasting money unnecessarily on celebrations, said Abhishek Shinde, the secretary of the SFI's city unit, also an SPPU student. "Tell us how this event will help or benefit students, or even teachers?" asked Shinde.
Atharv Ingle, a student, said, "There has been an invaluable contribution of all stakeholders associated with the university behind its improvement in the ranking.
The most important of these is the student community. Depriving students of this programme shows the narrow mentality of the university administration.

Rs 1.07 lakh bill: In Madhya Pradesh, 168 labourers, 65 masons deployed to apply 4 litres of paint at school; probe ordered

BHOPAL: After bills showing 168 labourers and 65 masons were deployed for applying just 4 litres of paint at a school, and 275 workers and 150 masons for 20 litres at another school in Shahdol district went viral on social media, the state's school education minister ordered a probe into the matter. Minister of School Education Rao Uday Pratap Singh directed the principal secretary of school education and the commissioner of public instructions to initiate an investigation. Meanwhile, the district collector of Shahdol also ordered a separate inquiry and appointed SDM Beohari, Narendra Singh Dhurvey, to conduct it. The controversial bills were from government schools in Sakandi and Nipaniya villages under Beohari tehsil of the district. According to the documents, Rs 1.07 lakh was allegedly withdrawn to apply just 4 litres of oil paint at the school in Sakandi, while Rs 2.3 lakh was shown as spent for 20 litres of paint at the school in Nipaniya. 'A probe has been ordered, and notices have been issued to the district education officer as well as the principals of the schools. We have also received the probe report for the Sakandi village school. Replies to the notices are expected by evening. Even if the construction and repair work is still ongoing, payment for materials can be withdrawn—but payment for labourers can only be made once the work is complete,' Shahdol district collector Kedar Singh told TOI.

Sena's Buldhana MLA sparks row with remarks on Maratha kings

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: On Saturday, Shiv Sena 's Buldhana MLA Sanjay Gaikwad caused a political controversy by making remarks perceived as disrespectful towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. During an interaction with reporters in Hadoletti village, Latur, Gaikwad SAID the two Maratha kings were multilingual and questioned Uddhav and Raj Thackeray's opposition to teaching Hindi as a third language in primary schools. Gaikwad visited Hadoletti to meet an elderly farmer who has been manually ploughing his field due to the inability to afford oxen or a tractor. TOI reported the farmer's plight and the govt assistance provided following the news. His comments followed Raj and Uddhav Thackeray sharing the stage in Mumbai for the first time in two decades. "If they had united 15 years ago, it might have made some difference. It is too late now. I don't think Maharashtra will see any real change because have come together." Reaffirming his position on multilingualism, Gaikwad asked, "Will you speak in Marathi when you go to another state?" He said survival in a globalised world requires knowledge of multiple languages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! 93% of Bihar voters given enumeration forms, 13.2% have submitted them: EC

Gyanesh Kumar NEW DELHI: With enumeration forms distributed to 93.7% of Bihar's 7.9 crore electorate so far and 13.2% electors already submitting the completed and signed forms, EC officials Saturday told TOI that documents can be added or uploaded by electors whose enumeration forms were submitted with incomplete documentation, right until July 25. July 25 is the last date for submission of the filled-up enumeration forms. "As of Saturday 6pm, over one crore enumeration forms (13.2% of Bihar's electors) have been received. The percentage of forms distributed has also gone up to 93.6%, with 7.4 crore forms given to the electors," an EC spokesperson said. Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while welcoming the fast-paced work on SIR in Bihar, said the exercise will be completed as scheduled, with the cooperation of all and 100% transparency. Sources in the poll panel told TOI that where enumeration forms are short on one or more required documents, there shall be a window for the elector concerned to submit them anytime before July 25. "In order to get one's name in the draft electoral roll, the strict condition is to sign and submit the pre-printed enumeration form before July 25. This step will filter out non-existent voters, either dead or migrated ones who are no longer ordinary residents of that assembly constituency," said an EC officer. Though BLOs will give their recommendation on "inclusion or exclusion" while submitting/uploading the filled up enumeration form, the electoral registration officer or assistant ERO is expected to scrutinise the forms "not recommended" by BLOs only after draft rolls are published on Aug 1. As many as 77,895 BLOs are going house-to-house to help the electors fill out their emuneration forms and collect them. In some cases, they are taking live pictures of the electors and uploading them, saving the elector the trouble of getting their pictures clicked. After the draft rolls are published on Aug 1, claims and objections may be filed by political parties or any member of the public until Sept 1. The final electoral roll will be published on Sept 30. Those still aggrieved can file first appeal with the district magistrate and second one with the chief electoral officer.
