Khaleej Times28-04-2025

Dubai Design District (d3), the global creative ecosystem that is part of Tecom Group PJSC, held a celebratory event to mark more than a decade of enabling design excellence.
d3 hosted global industry leaders during 'Beyond a Decade of Design', a special event reflecting on its role in cementing Dubai's position as a global hub for creativity and design since opening its doors in 2015. During the event, d3 highlighted its upcoming expansion project, comprising more than 500,000 sq.ft. of new premium spaces, to serve growing customer demand including from top-tier global companies. Also marking the occasion, the district launched the d3 Design Award, a prestigious new award platform to celebrate industry talent in the region.
'Dubai Design District (d3) was founded with a vision to transform regional design prowess into globally impactful results, and over the past decade, has enriched Dubai's knowledge economy by championing creativity and innovation,' said Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District (d3) part of Tecom Group.
'd3's pivotal expansion project will uphold our community's legacy of welcoming, nurturing, and amplifying design excellence, cementing Dubai's position as a global destination for design, creativity, and innovation, in line with Dubai Economic Agenda 'D33', Dubai Creative Economy Strategy, and Design Sector Strategy 2033.'
d3, one of Tecom Group's most sought-after specialised districts, was launched with the vision of empowering regional talent to play a defining role in strengthening Dubai's knowledge economy. In the decade since it opened for business, the district's community has grown to include more than 1,100 businesses and 20,000 creative professionals.
d3's upcoming expansion will play a vital role in serving demand from global customers in the design, fashion, and creative industries. The project, which includes the development of six Grade-A office buildings, will add more than 500,000 sq.ft. of gross leasable area (GLA) to the district, cementing d3 appeal as the destination of choice for creative minds from around the world.
Representing an investment of Dh825 million, the new development, which was announced by Tecom Group in August 2024, will feature office spaces built in line with LEED certification standards, offering stunning views of the Dubai skyline including the iconic Burj Khalifa, and is set for completion by H1 2028. The project will also include sports facilities, community spaces, ample parking, fine dining options, and an extended promenade, complementing the surrounding residential developments.
Nurturing future talent
Reaffirming its commitment to nurturing creative and innovative designers, the district announced the launch of the d3 Design Award to recognise exceptional design talent each year. Designers who live in the region will be eligible to enter the new awards, with the inaugural winner to be announced during Dubai Design Week in November.
Also as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, d3 will publish a specially curated commemorative illustrated book this year to showcase the city's most talented and inspiring design minds. A memento that celebrates regional creativity, the book will be distributed at global design events to highlight the work and ideas of talented Emirati designers.
d3 is today home to three academic institutions and hosts more than 100 events each year, including globally impactful platforms such as Dubai Fashion Week and Dubai Design Week. Home to in5 Design, the sector-focused vertical of Tecom Group's in5 incubator, the district has also supported more than 120 start-ups in the design sector since its inception.

Why are luxury European jewellery brands flocking to Dubai?

From luxury designers to schools and production facilities‭, ‬Dubai is fast becoming a jewellery hub with a growing number of European brands relocating or expanding to the city in a movement that is cementing the emirate's position in the luxury market as a crossroads of East meets West‭.‬ Panos Melekkis is one of those names‭. ‬The Cypriot fine jewellery designer has been part of a family business spanning generations‭, ‬but he tells‭ ‬KT LUXE‭ ‬that Dubai was the ideal choice for his bespoke design studio‭, ‬embodying‭ ‬'the spirit of modern luxury and artistic innovation'‭.‬ ‭ ‬'The city attracts a global clientele who appreciate exclusivity and craftsmanship‭, ‬making it the perfect environment to showcase‭ ‬my creations‭,‬'‭ ‬he said‭. ‬'My atelier in Dubai Design District‭ (‬D3‭) ‬is a place where artistry and craftsmanship converge‭, ‬where clients can immerse themselves in the creative process and witness the transformation of raw materials into masterpieces‭.‬' He says that with its ease of doing business‭, ‬Dubai offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and creativity‭, ‬and D3‭, ‬in particular‭, ‬has become a hub for luxury and innovation‭.‬ 'In Dubai‭, ‬I have access to a global market of high-net-worth individuals who seek exclusive‭, ‬personalised creations‭,‬'‭ ‬he explained‭.‬ ‭ ‬'The city's vibrant luxury scene and advanced manufacturing capabilities allow me to experiment with cutting-edge techniques and source the rarest gemstones‭. ‬This creative freedom‭, ‬combined with the ability to cater to a diverse‭, ‬international clientele‭, ‬is what sets my Dubai operations apart from my roots in Cyprus‭.‬' He says that in the Dubai market‭, ‬his family's bespoke designs‭, ‬high-value diamond pieces‭, ‬and rare coloured gemstones‭, ‬are particularly popular‭, ‬with clients seeking out exclusivity and personalisation‭, ‬and valuing pieces that reflect their individual tastes and tell a personal story‭.‬ But‭, ‬he admits‭, ‬Dubai has also played an influential role in his evolving direction and style‭. ‬'Cyprus‭, ‬with its rich history and Mediterranean influences‭, ‬gave me a deep respect for heritage and the timeless allure of classic design‭. ‬Dubai‭, ‬on the other hand‭, ‬has exposed me to a world of bold‭, ‬contemporary luxury‭, ‬pushing the boundaries of innovation and redefining opulence‭. ‬Together‭, ‬these influences have shaped my aesthetic‭, ‬blending the timeless elegance of European artistry with the dynamic energy of the modern Middle East‭.‬' Sophie Claudel‭, ‬director of L'ÉCOLE‭, ‬School of Jewellery Arts‭, ‬which already has campuses in Paris‭, ‬Hong Kong and Shanghai‭, ‬says that the school's recent expansion to Dubai is‭ ‬'the natural next step'‭.‬ 'We felt that Dubai combines a diverse melting pot of cultures‭, ‬it merges tradition and modernity‭, ‬and has a deep and strong history with jewellery‭, ‬so it makes perfect sense for L'ÉCOLE to be here‭,‬'‭ ‬she told‭ ‬KT LUXE‭.‬ The move coincides with last year's founding of The Dubai Business Group for Gold and Jewellery Designers‭, ‬a Dubai Chamber initiative recognising the city's growing design community and that aims to help develop local talent beyond the city's famous gold and diamond markets‭, ‬promoting Dubai as a global jewellery design hub‭.‬ The school‭, ‬which has classes for children and adults‭, ‬has seen interest not only from the community but also‭, ‬being a rare addition to the country's educational landscape‭, ‬has attracted professionals from the industry‭, ‬with programmes centred on art history‭, ‬gemology‭, ‬and craftsmanship‭.‬ 'Dubai is in full expansion mode and attracts so many talents from all over the world‭. ‬It is becoming a significant cultural hub‭ ‬in the region with a growing status as a centre for design and the arts‭.‬' She said this is having a major influence on the industry‭. ‬'This appreciation is appealing to jewellers from around the world to open their doors and share their craftsmanship and expertise‭.‬ 'We are witnessing many Maisons recognising this and creating immersive experiences for the community of Dubai‭, ‬showcasing their‭ ‬exceptional history and unique jewellery creations‭. ‬For institutions like L'ÉCOLE Middle East‭, ‬this environment enables meaningful contributions to the regional creative economy and supports the long-term‭ ‬development of the jewellery sector‭.‬' We are witnessing many Maisons recognising this and creating immersive experiences for the community of Dubai‭, ‬showcasing their‭ ‬exceptional history and unique jewellery creations‭" Sophie Claudel‭, ‬Director Of L'éCole Italian firm GDM Precious Metal Refining Recovery and Recycling has also recently come to the UAE‭, ‬becoming the country's first end-to-end recovery and refining plant of precious metals‭, ‬including gold‭, ‬silver‭, ‬platinum‭, ‬palladium‭, ‬and copper‭.‬ Emanuele Esposito‭, ‬director general of Gold Metal DMCC‭, ‬said that for the company‭, ‬there are huge benefits of the expansion‭. ‬'Dubai enables a level of integration that's structurally difficult elsewhere‭. ‬Here‭, ‬recovery‭, ‬refining‭, ‬secure storage‭, ‬and precious metals trading co-exist within a unified operational framework‭ ‬—‭ ‬streamlined‭, ‬compliant‭, ‬and future-ready‭.‬ 'As a refinery operating across industrial waste disposal‭, ‬electronic recovery‭, ‬and investment-grade bullion production‭, ‬we benefit from the UAE's regulatory clarity and logistical efficiency‭. ‬We're able to deliver outcomes with speed and precision that would be far more restricted in other jurisdictions‭.‬' As a luxury destination and a destination for small business‭, ‬Dubai offers the perfect second home‭. ‬'Dubai is a global benchmark for luxury‭, ‬trust‭, ‬and innovation‭. ‬Our presence here places the company at the heart of a thriving ecosystem‭, ‬trusted by investors‭, ‬private clients‭, ‬and artisans alike‭,‬'‭ ‬Esposito said‭.‬ 'In Italy and across Europe‭, ‬Dubai is regarded as the epicentre of modern luxury‭ [‬and‭] ‬‮…‬‭ ‬aligning with Dubai is a strategic move‭.‬‭ ‬It communicates that we operate to international benchmarks in a market that values both sustainability and precision‭. ‬It reinforces our identity not only as a refinery but also as a long-term partner in the global precious metals value chain‭.‬'

Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and Marriott International Enhance Collaboration with MoU to Strengthen Hospitality Ecosystem

Post Views: 32 Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Marriott International which aims to further boost the city's international visibility, diversify the destination offering, elevate guest experiences, and nurture next-generation industry talent. The MoU extends the long-standing collaborative efforts between DET and Marriott International, and marks another important step in advancing the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to further consolidate Dubai's position as a leading global destination for business and leisure. Signed by His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), part of DET, and Sandeep Walia, COO, Middle East & Luxury, Europe, Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, the MoU reinforces their commitment to accelerate the growth of the city's tourism and hospitality sectors. The MoU sets the foundation for potential collaborations whereby Dubai will be prominently promoted to guests worldwide through Marriott International's portfolio of hotels. In addition, potential joint marketing initiatives including multi-channel advertising, high-impact social media campaigns, and influencer collaborations will spotlight Dubai's unique attractions, cultural heritage, and exceptional experiences, aiming to drive wider international awareness and visitor demand. His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), part of DET, said: 'The growth and resilience of our tourism sector is driven by robust strategies and the collective commitment of forward-thinking partners such as Marriott International. The new MoU is inspired by visionary leadership to ensure Dubai remains at the forefront of global tourism and hospitality innovation. By leveraging the reach and expertise of one of the world's most prominent hotel groups, we are amplifying Dubai's global profile and delivering richer experiences to our visitors. As we pursue the ambitious goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, such alliances embody the spirit of public-private collaboration that define Dubai's continued success in delivering unforgettable experiences to visitors from around the world.' Sandeep Walia, COO, Middle East & Luxury, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International, added: 'We are proud to have a portfolio of over 50 hotels in Dubai across all segments – select, premium and luxury, that align with the diversity of experiences the city offers for every type of traveller. DET continues to set an example of unity and cohesion between the public and private sector, and their collaboration has been an integral part of our long-standing legacy and success in this market. We remain committed to working with DET to deliver memorable moments to guests from across the globe and provide them with an opportunity to unlock and discover experiences in this beautiful destination.' Plans include the integration of Dubai's iconic landmarks, culinary scene, and immersive experiences into Marriott International's seasonal travel packages and within the group's loyalty programme offering. This initiative aims to provide guests with authentic, locally-curated experiences, deepening their connection with the city and supporting Dubai's position as a must-visit destination. The collaboration between DET and Marriott International highlights the strength of Dubai's public-private partnerships in driving sustained tourism sector growth, evidenced by a robust performance so far in 2025. Dubai welcomed 7.15 million international overnight visitors in the first four months of this year, up 7% on the same period last year. This follows a record 18.72 million visitors, who arrived in Dubai in 2024, a 9% YoY growth. To further elevate service standards, DET's Dubai College of Tourism (DCT) will deliver specialised training for hotel staff through its Dubai Way programme, featuring customised training modules focused on customer service excellence, cultural awareness, and guest relations, ensuring that hospitality professionals deliver world-class service tailored to diverse global visitors. The MoU reflects DET's ongoing efforts to establish meaningful partnerships, including the Hospitality Apprenticeship Programme for Emiratis launched by DCT and Marriott International in March 2025. Through this initiative, students receive exclusive internship and mentorship opportunities with industry leaders, further supporting Dubai's talent development agenda and specifically helping to build a broad pool of home-grown talent for the tourism workforce. With over 80 properties and 23,000 rooms across 23 renowned brands in the UAE – including 59 properties in Dubai alone – Marriott International continues to play a key role in shaping the city's hospitality landscape. DET's collaboration with Marriott International is part of its broader strategy to engage global industry leaders in shaping a future-ready tourism sector.
