Pirates' Ben Cherington Makes Alarming Admission on Yankees' David Bednar Package
The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees made an impact trade on Thursday, and it's clear where both teams stand in the aftermath.
New York is going for broke, having acquired ex-Pirates closer David Bednar to go with Jake Bird and Camilo Doval in its new-look bullpen. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is staring at yet another rebuild, if you can call it that.
What was most frustrating to some, though, was the return the Pirates got from New York. The Yankees sent catchers Rafael Flores and Edgleen Perez, plus outfielder Brian Sanchez. None of those players are currently ranked in MLB Pipeline's Top 100.

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - APRIL 19: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates reacts after striking out a batter in the ninth inning during a game against the Cleveland Guardians at PNC Park on April 19, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. MoreFor a premier closer with 1 1/2 remaining years of control, it was surprising to see the Pirates give up Bednar and not get even a consensus top-five prospect from the Yankees' system. But general manager Ben Cherington did his best to justify the move.
On Thursday, after the deadline had passed, Cherington essentially said the players they got were their favorites available, even though they could have had "ranked" prospects instead.
"We had access to players who were ranked in the way that you were describing," Cherington said, per Alex Stumpf of MLB.com. "We did, and we preferred this package.
"Obviously, every team is going to assess the players a little bit differently, and sometimes, that could be different from the public rankings also. It was our estimation — and our opinion — that this was not just a really strong collection of talent to get for David Bednar, but also the best one that we had access to in this market."
Flores has a chance to be a starter in the majors by next season, and Perez and Sanchez have things to like in their profile. But the Yankees kept virtually every prospect that they think can be an impact major leaguer, not only in this trade, but in their long list of others, too.
Cherington, if he survives the offseason, has to hope Flores quickly proves he's the real deal. Because the biggest move he made at this year's deadline genuinely looks underwhelming for now.

Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr commits egregious baserunning blunder, faces social media backlash
New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr. took heat on social media on Saturday over a head-scratching baserunning blunder against his former team, the Miami Marlins. Chisholm was on first base in the top of the second inning with Paul Goldschmidt up at bat. The Yankees' batter popped up to Marlins' second baseman Xavier Edwards. Chisholm was too far off first base and got caught napping. Edwards then threw the ball to first for the inning-ending double play. Chisholm was criticized by the Yankees' announcers during the broadcast as well as fans on social media for the brain fart. Yankees manager Aaron Boone also received some backlash on social media. "What was Chisholm thinking?" Yankees play-by-play man Michael Kay asked. Color commentator Paul O'Neill was left in shock, saying, "What is going on?" Boone and first base coach Travis Chapman also had an animated conversation in the dugout. Chishlom said afterward he wouldn't have changed anything, adding that he was trying to be aggressive on the basepaths by forcing Edwards to possibly make an error. "I was just trying to be aggressive, already playing with both the middle infielders out there," he said, via The Athletic. "I saw something that I thought they were going to do. He deked it like he was going to do it. He didn't do it. Still trying to be aggressive because I played here before. I know how the field plays. Sometimes you get aggressive and you get caught up and you make an out." Boone said he didn't think about taking Chisholm out of the game. New York lost the game, 2-0. The Yankees only mustered up two hits on Miami. Chisholm was 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout.

Nets ranked as worst team in Eastern Conference by NBA.com
The Brooklyn Nets were one of the more active teams in the NBA this offseason as they are looking to tweak their roster while planning for the future. Brooklyn is still in the early stages of its rebuild so the team isn't necessarily looking to make it to the playoffs next season, but the view of the team from pundits suggests that next season could be a tough one. John Schuhmann recently published his power rankings for every team in the Eastern Conference and in his list, he had the Nets ranked as the worst team in the conference following their offseason moves. The most notable moves that Brooklyn made was selecting five players in the 2025 NBA Draft and trading Cam Johnson to the Denver Nuggets for forward Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick. One of the more interesting parts about the Nets' performance during the 2024-25 season is that they finished with a 26-56 record despite beginning the campaign with a 9-10 record, putting them on pace to finish slightly below 40 wins on the season. Given that Brooklyn was hoping to get a high draft pick in the 2025 Draft, they eventually traded Dennis Schroder to the Golden State Warriors to start what would eventually be a harder push to the rebuild. Whether or not the Nets are hoping to improve on their record from the 2024-25 campaign, they are still hoping to improve on both sides of the floor, especially when it comes to efficiency on the offensive end. "They took 24% of their shots, the league's highest rate, in the last six seconds of the shot clock, according to Second Spectrum tracking. Their effective field goal percentage of 44.2% in the last six seconds ranked 25th," Schuhmann noted. As it stands, the Nets will be heading into next season with Nic Claxton at center, Porter at one of the forward spots, Egor Demin at point guard, and presumably Cam Thomas at the shooting guard spot. Brooklyn will be hoping that their rookies and young players make strides over the course of what could be another rough season from a wins and losses perspective. "Over the last 20 years, the 2014-15 Sixers had the highest percentage of their minutes (37%) that went to rookies, and only one of their nine rookies was a first-round pick. The Nets could certainly challenge that mark and maximize their odds for a higher selection than they got this year," Schuhmann wrote.
