Abdullah calls for holistic implementation of NEP, calls it ‘magnificent and far-reaching' framework

Srinagar, Jul 22 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday advocated for a holistic implementation of the National Education Policy, and urged educators to empower learners.
Emphasising the importance of reflection and course correction, the chief minister said, 'The New Education Policy is now five years old. This is the time to evaluate where we have succeeded, where we have fallen short, and what more can be done to implement it better'.
A policy is only as effective as its application and understanding, he said.
Terming the NEP-2020 a 'magnificent and far-reaching' framework, Abdullah stressed that the real change will come only when the policy is understood in its true spirit and implemented with sensitivity to local needs and realities.
Pointing to gaps in subject availability and staff, the chief minister said that many government schools and colleges are unable to offer a wide range of subjects due to faculty shortages.
'In Jammu, only a few schools offer Urdu; in Kashmir, a few offer Hindi. Even regional languages like Kashmiri, Dogri, or Punjabi are taught in very limited number of institutions. These gaps need to be filled gradually, within our available resources,' he said.
He also addressed frequent comparisons between government and private schools, highlighting that government institutions operate in areas where private schools often do not venture.
'Setting up a school in Srinagar is easy. Try opening one in Gurez, Tangdhar, or Machil. Our teachers work in extreme conditions, away from the spotlight, and deserve recognition,' he said.
Abdullah also emphasized the importance of inclusivity in education. 'Every child — regardless of physical or learning challenges — deserves a chance to learn. Are our schools truly inclusive and accessible to all? This workshop is a good step in that direction,' he said.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday (July 25, 2025) joined the growing clamour from relatives and political parties to constitute an inquiry into the killing of a 21-year-old youth during an alleged shootout in Jammu a day ago. The deceased, Mohammad Parvez, was engaged in sand mining as a profession. According to the family, Parvez and his brother-in-law, residents of Niki Tawi, left home on Thursday to buy medicine. Family members were later called to identify a body at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu by the police. Parvez got married two months ago, with his family claiming he had nothing to do with drug peddling. However, several Jammu-based news portals citing police officials, claimed there was a shoot-out with drug peddlers at Surey Chak area in Jammu's Satwari area on Thursday and Parvez was killed. The police did not furnish further details about the incident. Parvez's family along with the Gujjar community refuted the claim. 'It is a fake encounter,' Talib Hussian, a Gujjar social activist, said. Guftar Ahmed, a Gujjar leader who joined deceased's family in their protest on Friday, said, 'Top officials of the J&K Police should see the act of police on ground zero. Not a single FIR was registered against him. Union Home Minister and J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha should take strong action against officials involved in the killing of tribal youth,' Mr. Ahmed said. A spokesman of the Gujjar Bakerwal Students Alliance said the 'selective killing of Gujjar youth in Jammu through fake encounters is alarming'. 'Why was Parvez Ahmed murdered? 'An Inquiry is being initiated to uncover the truth and ensure justice in this case. The J&K government led by Mr. Abdullah will ensure that justice is delivered in the case,' Mr. Rana said. Former J&K Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said the tribal youth was 'killed by the police and labelled as a drug dealer'. 'Even that may be the case, we still live in a democratic country where justice is served through rule of law as opposed to khap panchayats or kangaroo courts. Sincerely hope the Director General takes cognisance of this shocking incident by ordering a time bound impartial probe. We must not descend or condone a culture of extra judicial encounters because that's precisely what alienates people,' Ms. Mufti said. BJP leader Ravinder Raina also condemned the incident. The Islamic Welfare Organisation also expressed deep anguish and outrage over the 'tragic killing' of the Gujjar youth. 'Such a brutal and senseless act not only shatters the faith of the people in the law enforcement agencies but also raises serious questions about the continued misuse of power and growing trend of extrajudicial actions,' the organisation said. The organisation 'unequivocally condemned the act and demand a time-bound high-level judicial probe to ascertain the facts behind the killing'. 'The family of the deceased deserves justice, and the community demands transparency, fairness, and accountability from the system,' it added.

Muslim bodies urge govt to ensure end of Israeli aggression in Gaza
New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) Prominent Muslim bodies and Islamic scholars on Friday appealed to the government to stand against injustice and take swift action to ensure that the 'continued Israeli aggression" in Gaza ends, asserting that India has historically aligned itself with the oppressed and it is time to reaffirm that legacy. In a joint statement, prominent Muslim organisations and Islamic scholars called on both the Indian government and global powers to intervene and stop the 'continuing atrocities" in Gaza. 'We, the undersigned leaders of Muslim organisations in India, Islamic scholars and peace-loving citizens strongly condemn the deepening genocide and humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. On behalf of over 200 million Indian Muslims and all peace-loving citizens of our beloved country, we express our unwavering support and solidarity with the people of Palestine," the statement said. 'We appeal to the government of India, international leaders, and people of conscience worldwide to stand against the injustice and take swift action to end the continued Israeli aggression," it said. 'The relentless assault on the Palestinian people has taken the form of a brutal genocide, characterised by systematic destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and refugee camps. Since October 2023, nearly 100,000 innocent Palestinians, including a significant number of women and children, have lost their lives," the statement claimed. The international community cannot afford to remain silent, it said. 'We call upon all states to sever military and economic ties with Israel and back the UN General Assembly's call to end the illegal occupation. UPSC aspirant caught using unfair means during govt job exam, barred for 3 years
A civil services aspirant has been barred for three years over the alleged use of unfair means during a government job recruitment exam. Besides, her candidature for the current year's examination also stands cancelled, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced on Friday. "As the candidate has violated the rules of the Examination and is found to be guilty under the rule of the Examination - 12(1)(h) 'being in possession of or using unfair means during the examination'," the UPSC said in a post on Linkedin. The commissions announced the cancellation of the aspirant's candidature for this year, and said she was debarred from appearing in all future examinations conducted by the UPSC for a period of 3 years. The UPSC said that the decision was in line with standardisation of penalties, and also shared a document outlining how violation of rules is dealt with. "Any candidate found guilty of indulging in unfair means or misconduct during examinations faces strict disciplinary action as per rules, including debarment from future examinations, as the strictest action," UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The official termed UPSC 'an epitome of merit and fair system' and said that the commission ensures that candidates get selected purely on merit basis. The action against the UPSC aspirant comes over an year after the commission cancelled former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar's provisional candidature. Puja allegedly misrepresented her identity and used forged documents to clear the 2022 civil services examination. She submitted fake Other Backward Class (OBC) and disability certificates, and claimed that her family income was ₹6 lakh per annum, to qualify for the OBC non-creamy layer category. A detailed probe later revealed that her father had declared assets of ₹40 crore when he contested general elections as an Independent, and her family owned several immovable properties and vehicles.
