[UPDATED] Immigration Dept will work with police in probe into militant group

New Straits Times13 hours ago
PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department will provide its full cooperation to the police in the investigation into a Bangladeshi militant group.
"The matter is under police action. It is being handled by the police, so I would prefer not to comment further on it," said Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban.
"However, we take the issue seriously and will provide full cooperation to the police in their investigation and in taking appropriate legal action," he said during the department's shooting programme with the media here today.
Earlier today, police said 100 to 150 Bangladeshi nationals were involved in the radical militant group that was crippled recently. It aimed to spread Islamic State ideology here and in Bangladesh.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the group focused on recruiting Bangladeshis working in factories, petrol stations and construction sites.
Police detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals linked to the group last month.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said the operation began on April 24 and was carried out in three phases in Selangor and Johor.
Of the 36 Bangladeshis who were detained, five were charged under Chapter VIA of the Penal Code, which involves offences related to terrorism, while 15 were issued deportation orders.
The remaining 16 are still under investigation.

Body with gunshot wounds left at hospital amid robbery probe

CCTV footage showed two persons arriving in a dark-coloured car and leaving the body at Sultanah Aminah Hospital. PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating the discovery of a man's body left at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru, believed to be linked to an attempted robbery at a petrol station in Gelang Patah. Johor police chief M Kumar said the body, found with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, was dropped off at the hospital early yesterday morning without any identity documents. CCTV footage showed two persons arriving in a dark-coloured car and leaving the body at the hospital. Police are working to identify them. Fingerprint checks identified the victim as a 42-year-old man from Sungai Petani, Kedah, with four prior criminal offences. A post-mortem confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Preliminary investigations revealed that around 12.10am, a group armed with parangs attacked another group, one of whom had a pistol, at a petrol station in Gelang Patah. The altercation led to shots being fired. Police later arrested two local men and a foreign national, aged between 30 and 40, in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur, at about 7pm yesterday. A Glock 19 pistol, a firearm licence book, bullets, a magazine with six 9mm rounds, a car and spent bullet casings were seized. One suspect is a personal bodyguard, though police are verifying the legality of the firearm involved. All three suspects have been remanded until July 10. Kumar said police are working to determine their connection to the dead man.

Malaysian authorities dismantle Islamic State-linked funding network

Xinhua 04 Jul 2025, 17:45 GMT+10 KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian authorities have dismantled an Islamic State-linked funding network operating in the country, which mainly relied on Bangladeshi nationals working in Malaysia, Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said on Friday. According to Bernama, Mohd Khalid told a press briefing that the group collected funds by charging an annual membership fee, as well as other voluntary contributions based on members' financial means. The group's members were working in labor sectors such as factories, construction sites, and petrol stations across Malaysia. "The funds collected were then transferred abroad using e-wallet applications and international money transfer services," he said, adding that no Malaysians were found to be involved. Mohd Khalid added that the group also used social media platforms and messaging apps to recruit new members.
