MLB trade rumors: Will Diamondbacks deal Zac Gallen at deadline?

Gallen has struggled with his command this season, and hasn't pounded the strike zone as in the past, opened a lot of eyes this past week when he overpowered the San Francisco Giants. He allowed just five hits and one run in seven innings, striking out 10 batters. It reminded everyone of his sheer talent, dominating the New York Mets and New York Yankees earlier this season, going 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings.
It may be premature to say he's completely back, but teams scouting him have been impressed, believing that the D-backs will trade him before he hits free agency this winter.
The irony of Gallen's success is that the better he pitches, the higher his trade value, but also the better chance that the D-backs keep him since he could get them back in the playoff race.
"I would like to not be in that discussion," Gallen, who has three top-10 Cy Young finishes in the last five years, tells USA TODAY Sports. "I would like for us - and it starts with me - to put us in a position where the front office believes this is a team they can add to where we can finish this thing out and see what happens come October. Let's see what happens."
And, obviously, the better Gallen pitches, the bigger his bank account will become when he becomes a free agent in November.
"I've never been a person that really thinks about the eternal factors, and all of that stuff," Gallen says, "even going to back to being drafted. It's a thing. It's there. It is what it is. You just got to go handle your business."

Two-time champ Pete Alonso, Kyle Schwarber decline HR Derby invites

July 7 - Two-time champion Pete Alonso of the New York Mets said Sunday that he will not be participating in the Home Run Derby this year in Atlanta. Alonso won the popular event that is held one day before the All-Star Game in 2019 and 2021. He had been a participant in each of the last five times the event was held. "I just decided not to do it this year," Alonso told reporters on Sunday of the July 14 event. "I have never really fully enjoyed the three off-days, so I just want to be in the best possible position to help this team win in the second half. "I'm in a groove with certain things. I definitely will do it again. It doesn't mean no forever. Alonso was chosen to play in the All-Star Game for the fifth time. He is batting .287 with 20 homers and 73 RBIs in 91 games. Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber also said Sunday that he won't be part of the derby. He participated in 2018 and 2022. It's a good bet Schwarber will strongly consider being part of the competition next year when the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby are held in Philadelphia. "I'm not going to do the Home Run Derby," Schwarber said Sunday of the 2025 event. "Maybe see what happens next year." Schwarber was named to the All-Star team for the third time in his career on Sunday. He is batting .251 with 27 homers and 63 RBIs in 90 games. Other players expected to pass on the event are Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers. There are just three confirmed participants with the Home Run Derby being held a week from Monday -- Seattle Mariners star Cal Raleigh (35 homers), emerging Washington Nationals slugger James Wood (23) and Atlanta Braves standout Ronald Acuna Jr., who has nine homers in 40 games since missing nearly 12 months due to an ACL injury. --Field Level Media

Giants activate 3B Matt Chapman (hand) from IL

July 6 - The San Francisco Giants activated third baseman Matt Chapman from the 10-day injured list prior to Saturday night's contest against the host Athletics. Chapman is batting fourth while playing in his customary defensive spot at the hot corner. Chapman was sidelined with a right hand injury sustained in a game against the Atlanta Braves on June 8. He jammed the hand while diving back to first base in the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately displayed he was in pain. Chapman, 32, played in a rehab game for Triple-A Sacramento on Friday night in Reno, Nev., and went 0-for-3 with a walk. San Francisco was just 9-14 without Chapman and has lost eight of its past 11 entering Saturday's contest in West Sacramento, Calif. The five-time Gold Glove Award winner is batting .243 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 65 games this season. He is in his second season with the Giants. The Giants also designated infielder Sergio Alcantara for assignment, optioned right-hander Mason Black to Sacramento and recalled righty Tristan Beck from the River Cats. Alcantara, 28, was hitless in four at-bats in his lone game for the Giants, which was his first big league appearance since 2022 for the San Diego Padres. He has a .207 career average in 193 games over four seasons with five teams. Black, 25, allowed five runs (three earned) and five hits over four innings in Saturday's 11-2 loss to the A's in his first big league appearance of the season. He is 1-5 with a 6.47 ERA in 10 appearances (eight starts) over the past two seasons with San Francisco. Beck, 29, was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in six relief appearances with the Giants earlier this season. He is 4-3 with a 3.66 ERA in 46 appearances (four starts) over three seasons with San Francisco. --Field Level Media
