SFA's amateur system risks another season of chaos for youth football
When the Scottish FA's Comet system crashed last year, you'd have thought it would have acted as ample warning against a repeat.
Hundreds of matches were called off and a generation of volunteers were left in a state of frustration over their dealings with the SFA's complex computer registrations system.
Several sources last year spelled out that Comet was overly complicated for the grassroots game.
And too many people were stuck for too long in a 'computer says no' death loop.
But roll on 12 months and with the new season six weeks away the computer pile-up is happening again with Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) checks.
We can't overstate the importance of keeping kids safe but after last year's issues, there can be no excuse for another round of infuriating delays, exacerbated by the lack of any human helpline to streamline the process.
Football is a moneymaker at the higher levels. And the SFA, which governs our national game, is not short of a few bob, with millions coming in via grant funding before any other revenue is even added up.
That's why there is no excuse for failing to see this coming.

The SYFA needs a team of professional administrators that can master any system or database required to run the game.
Professionals must be available at the end of a phone to educate the officials of clubs who give up their own free time to bring youngsters into the game.
And the SFA needs to sort this out well before next summer – or they will score a hat-trick of own goals that no one wants to see.
Welcome back, Lewis Capaldi
Lewis Capaldi's return to music with an unannounced performance at Glastonbury showed just how much he has been missed.
The singer had been on an extended break from music since 2023 due to his mental health struggles.
The break had followed a concert on the same Pyramid Stage two years ago, when his voice 'packed in' and fans had to help him finish his biggest hit, Someone You Loved.
Everyone understood Lewis, who suffers from anxiety and Tourette's, needed to put his health first.
It was wonderful to see him once more engaging with his fans in his modest way, despite his incredible talent.
He's also back with a new single that deals head on with his troubles and highlights once again what a special talent he is.

Conor Coady to Rangers transfer timeline emerges as Ibrox side in talks for 2 more deals after landing defender
Talks have been ongoing with the Foxes and there is a willingness on the 32-year-old's part to move to Ibrox Rangers hope to get the green light from Leicester City to sign Conor Coady this week. The former England international has been a long-term target for sporting director Kevin Thelwell since he was appointed over the summer. Talks have been ongoing with the Foxes and there is a willingness on the 32-year-old's part to move to Ibrox. The move has been slowed down by Leicester's decision to sack head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy and the fallout from their relegation from the Premier League and the financial impact of that. The Midlands club have had more pressing issues but are expected to give Coady the green light to move north. The former Wolves defender is on a decent wage and in the final year of his deal. The move would help them cut their wage budget. Rangers wouldn't be able to offer the same wages but are willing to put a long-term deal in place to land Coady. New boss Russell Martin has already brought in Max Aarons from Norwich City on-loan and Coady is also likely to be part of his new-look defence. Rangers had also targeted Kwame Poku but he has decided to go to Queen's Park Rangers. The Ibrox side could have signed him from Peterborough for nothing cross-border. Rangers tabled a big-money deal in excess of £1million-a-year because they didn't have to pay compensation. Their move was scooped when QPR matched those wages and also agreed to pay Peterborough compensation. The 23-year-old then decided he wanted to move to London to be closer to his family than to head to Scotland. Rangers are still working on a couple of other fronts, with Liverpool left back Owen Beck amongst them and Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman. The Light Blues are also waiting to see what happens with interest in some of their own players. Lille are keen on Hamza Igamane but Rangers' valuation is an issue and that remains the case for AEK Athens and Cyriel Dessers. Kwame Poku tells Rangers exactly why he snubbed transfer for QPR deal
The winger appeared to be closing in on a move to Ibrox but opted to stay in England Transfer recruit Kwame Poku has lifted the lid on why he chose Queens Park Rangers amid interest from Rangers after leaving Peterborough. The forward has been heavily linked with the Light Blues in the past 12 months with Posh director of football Barry Fry revealing Ibrox scouts had watched the player in action. Russell Martin appeared close to bringing the 23-year-old to the Scottish Premiership in the last month - but in the end Poku opted to remain in England and take the step up from League One to the Championship. The club took a knowing swipe at Rangers on social media - and the man himself would lift the lid on the decision. Asked by club media why he opted for QPR, he said: "I think speaking to the manager, and speaking to everyone here, the project they are building here excites me and I want to be part of taking QPR to the next level. "When I was speaking to (new QPR boss) Julien Stephan he was talking about where he sees me fitting in and where he thinks I can influence the game. That's what really attracted me. "Being 23 turning 24, I'm not quite young anymore so I want to come in and make my mark from the jump.' Chief executive Christian Nourry also claimed that the R's have seen off competition from across Europe: "His decision to join the football club today in the face of interest from Europe-competing teams abroad and Championship teams with significantly bigger budgets than us is a fantastic validation of the direction we are moving in, including a specialised focus on individual player development." It leave Rangers to search for another winger as sporting director Kevin Thelwell and boss Martin look to strengthen before the crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos next month. The club are in talks over bringing in Conor Coady to bolster the defence while Dor Turgeman is a target to boost the frontline with Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers facing uncertain futures.
