Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi, who has been appointed as the State returning officer for the party's organisational poll, said that the election for both State president and national council members from Odisha has been 'put on hold'.
An unfortunate incident took place in Puri, and three devotees lost their lives, and many others are undergoing treatment, Sarangi said. 'Such a tragic incident has disturbed all of us. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased devotees,' he said.
'In view of the stampede, the elections of the State president and national council members from Odisha, which were scheduled to be held on July 1, have been put on hold,' he said. Information about the election will be shared later, said Sarangi.

Himachal: Disaster has inflicted deep wounds on state, says Jai Ram Thakur

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India] July 2 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh LoP and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday said that the onset of this year's monsoon has inflicted deep wounds on the state. The incessant rainfall and a series of cloudbursts and flash floods have devastated parts of Himachal Pradesh over the past 19 hours, leaving five people dead, 16 missing and causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property. According to the Himachal Pradesh State Emergency Operation Centre (HP-SEOC), 332 individuals have been successfully rescued in coordinated operations across multiple districts. The worst-hit district is Mandi, where all five casualties and the highest number of missing persons - 16 - were reported. Eleven people remain stranded, and several more have been evacuated from flood-affected zones. A total of 278 individuals were rescued from Mandi, the HP-SEOC confirmed. 'There has been a huge loss of life and property. Many people lost their lives untimely. I pray to God that the souls of those who lost their lives in this tragedy rest in peace. My condolences to those who lost their loved ones in this disaster; may God grant them the strength to endure this sorrow,' he said. He said that the most devastation occurred in the Mandi district. Many areas have lost contact. No news is being received from there. 'We have deployed our workers and associates in the disaster-affected areas to provide all possible assistance. We also urge the administration to speed up relief efforts for the disaster victims. They should be given all possible help. Relief and rescue operations should be carried out at war footing.' Thakur also congratulated Dr Rajeev Bindal, the newly elected State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and said that he will take the organisation to new heights. He said that last time, the BJP missed creating history. 'We narrowly missed forming the government again. There was a very small margin, but I believe that this time Congress will not even cross double digits.' He said that under Dr Bindal's leadership, BJP will reach new heights. Dr Bindal is an energetic leader who neither stops nor tires. Responding to questions from media representatives, Thakur said that media friends used to ask when the election for your president would be held? Our president is in front of you now. Now go and ask them, for the past nine months, they have only had a president, no executive body, and no office-bearers. Those who were irritated by people of the state being served chapatis during Jan Manch are now serving wild rooster at their programs, besides that, not a single task of the public is being fulfilled. Due to the government's failures, people are fed up with this government. They want this government to go as soon as possible and to be freed from this misgovernance. Jai Ram Thakur said that 'we are very fortunate that we have seen BJP form government three times consecutively before our eyes.' Because of this, things are happening in the country today that we couldn't even imagine. If any work was done to give women reservation in the legislature, it was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We are among the fortunate who witnessed the completion for the Ram Temple. We have seen the grand Ram Temple being built in Ayodhya Dham. Today, Article 370 and 35(A) have become history in Kashmir, and development has become its new identity. All this became possible only when there was a BJP government in the country and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. (ANI)

"Central govt refusing to cooperate in crackdown on drug trafficking": AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj

New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): AAP leader and Delhi Unit President Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday levelled allegations against the BJP-led Central Government and claimed that the Delhi Police--under direct control of the Centre--is obstructing crucial anti-drug operations by Punjab Police across the national capital. According to an official release, the AAP Delhi State President alleged that the Centre was playing politics on an issue as serious as narcotics and demanded immediate cooperation with state agencies to dismantle the drug trafficking network operating in Delhi. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj stated, 'We all know that under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, a sustained and major crackdown is underway against drug abuse and those engaged in the drug trade. For years, former Punjab Minister Vikramjit Singh Majithia's name has been repeatedly linked with the drug business in Punjab. Just a few days ago, Majithia was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Department in connection with a drug-related case.' He added, 'As part of this investigation, the Punjab Police and Vigilance Department are today conducting raids in several states across the country.' Saurabh Bharadwaj further said, 'It is with great regret that I share with you all that the Punjab Police and Vigilance Department have been seeking to conduct raids at multiple locations in Delhi since this morning. However, the Delhi Police, which reports directly to the BJP-led Central Government, is refusing to cooperate with the Punjab Police and Vigilance Department in executing these raids.' He stated, 'It appears deliberate efforts are being made to obstruct these raids in Delhi, potentially allowing other culprits involved in the drug racket to destroy evidence and evade arrest.' Appealing to the Central Government, Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'Drug addiction is a serious issue that is destroying our future generations and ruining our youth. On such a sensitive issue, the Central Government must rise above politics and extend full cooperation to state governments.' AAP leader and Delhi Assembly LoP Atishi took to X and posted, 'Has a deal been struck between BJP and Vikram Majithia, accused in the drug money case? Now, the BJP is saving Majithia from the drug money case; in return, Majithia will join the BJP. Since this morning, Punjab Police have been present to raid two important locations in Delhi. But the BJP's Delhi Police is not allowing the raid to happen. Why is BJP protecting the accused in the drug money case?' (ANI)

Karnataka: Siddaramaiah slams railway fare hike, says common man will bear the brunt

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 2 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticised the Centre for increasing railway fares, saying it would burden students, daily wage workers, small traders, and the common man, while accusing the BJP of double standards for protesting against state government policies but remaining silent on the Centre's decision. 'Railway fares hiked!! Who bears the brunt? The daily wage workers, students, small traders, and the common man struggling under rising prices,' Siddaramaiah said in his X post on Tuesday. Demanding an immediate rollback of the hike, Siddaramaiah said he stood with the people of Karnataka and the country who are forced to pay more for essential travel. 'This fare hike must be rolled back immediately. Don't make people's daily travel another jumla. Let the trains run, not the people's patience,' he said. He took a swipe at the Karnataka unit of the BJP, saying the party had no problem protesting against milk price hikes meant to help farmers but stayed silent on a decision that burdens ordinary people. 'When we increased milk prices to help our farmers, @BJP4Karnataka shouted in the streets and called it 'anti-people'. But now, when the @BJP4India-led Union government hikes railway fares, there is deafening silence. Why? Because this hike doesn't help farmers or the poor--it only helps the BJP government fill its own coffers,' he added. Siddaramaiah also drew a comparison with the Bengaluru Metro fare hike, accusing the BJP of blaming the state government despite the hike being recommended by a central committee. 'When metro fares were hiked in Karnataka after 8 years, BJP leaders rushed to blame the Congress government, ignoring the fact that the fare hike decision was taken by a fare fixation committee constituted by the Union Government itself. Back then, the Centre manipulated the narrative to place the burden on us. Now, with this railway fare hike, who will they place the burden on?' he said. The Ministry of Railways has announced a rationalisation of passenger train fares, which came into effect on July 1, 2025. As per the new structure, fares for non-suburban ordinary second-class coaches will increase by half a paisa per kilometre for journeys exceeding 500 km. This means a fare increase of Rs 5 for journeys between 501-1500 km, Rs 10 for 1501-2500 km, and Rs 15 for 2501-3000 km. Sleeper and first-class fares will also rise by the same per-kilometre rate. Mail and express trains will see second-class fares rise by one paisa per kilometre, with proportionate increases for other classes. However, fares for suburban trains and season tickets will remain unchanged. (ANI)
