BJP flays Oppn over bandh

Bhubaneswar: The BJP MP, Aparajita Sarangi, on Thursday criticised the Opposition for calling a Statewide bandh in Odisha, terming it an attempt to create political disturbance rather than providing constructive solutions in the wake of the self-immolation case. Speaking to the media, BJP national spokesperson Sarangi said, 'The death of a young student from FM (Autonomous) College on July 14 has deeply shocked us all. The government has responded to the situation within its constitutional and administrative framework. But instead of helping restore calm or suggesting positive solutions, the Congress and its allies are indulging in disruptive politics.' The Bhubaneswar MP said the Odisha government responded swiftly and responsibly to the incident. She highlighted that the government took complete responsibility for the girl's treatment. Sarangi also said that immediate disciplinary and legal action were taken against the accused faculty member, Samir Kumar Sahu, and the Principal of the College, Dillip Kumar Ghose, who were arrested and sent to jail. She condemned the demand for the resignation of Odisha's Higher Education Minister, calling it a diversionary tactic. 'Such behaviour is unacceptable. This is not the time for street politics but for serious self-reflection by these parties,' Sarangi added. Slamming the Congress, she said, 'The Congress was in power for 40 years, and the BJD has ruled for 24 years. What did they do to create a secure and enabling ecosystem for women? Why didn't they ensure women's safety then?' Sarangi further said the Opposition BJD and Congress have no moral authority to question a newly-formed government led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who took charge just over a year ago. Criticising the Opposition for 'politicising' the incident, she said, 'Both BJD and Congress are now polluting the environment by using this tragedy for political mileage. They failed to build a safe ecosystem during their regimes. It's time for them to introspect.' She concluded by expressing confidence in the BJP-led government's intent and capacity to ensure justice and improve women's safety across the State.

Authorities of FM college tried to cover up, protect teacher: Balasore MP Sarangi

BALASORE: Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi on Saturday alleged gross negligence and callousness on the part of FM (Autonomous) College authorities in handling a harassment complaint that culminated in a student's attempt of self-immolation. The BJP MP claimed that the college principal and the Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) failed to act responsibly despite complaints by the victim. 'This matter had been ongoing for several days. When it was brought to my notice, I personally called the principal and the police. The principal said the ICC was probing the matter and assured that the enquiry would be completed in five days,' Sarangi told mediapersons. The girl along with her friends had met him days earlier and revealed she had previously attempted suicide due to continued harassment by assistant professor Samir Kumar Sahu. 'After receiving the news of the self-immolation, I tried calling the principal multiple times, but he did not respond. I immediately rushed to the college to review the ICC report and was shocked to find glaring discrepancies between the report and statements made by the complainant, her father and other students. The report was clearly biased,' he alleged. Sarangi termed the ICC's report as 'Samira Chalisa', saying it appeared to glorify the accused professor rather than hold him accountable. 'One absurd claim in the report was that he taught yoga to students who came late to class. Is that even logical?' he questioned. The MP also raised serious concerns about the integrity of the ICC's functioning. 'When I checked the records, I was stunned. The proceeding register had only signatures and there were no details of discussions or conclusions. Yet the principal claimed the committee had met five times. Every effort was made to shield the assistant professor,' he said.

ED attaches 9 properties, bank accounts worth ₹14 crore of ex-principal secretary to former CM Bhupinder Hooda

Assets worth ₹ 14.06 crore belonging to retired IAS officer Murari Lal Tayal, former Principal Secretary to the then Chief Minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, have been attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of a probe into a disproportionate assets case, news agency PTI reported. The probe agency shared the information on Monday, stating that the attached immovable properties include two houses and seven apartments. The federal agency stated that a provisional attachment order for these properties, located in Chandigarh, Delhi, and Gurugram, was issued on 30 June under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The case is based on a CBI FIR accusing Tayal and his family of amassing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Tayal also served on the Competition Commission of India (CCI) from 2009 to 2014. The ED scrutinised the income tax filings and stock market activities of Tayal, his wife Savita, and son Kartik during the probe. During the check period (2006–2014), the accused acquired disproportionate assets worth ₹ 14.06 crore using proceeds of crime generated through illegal gratification, the ED alleged. In a bizarre incident last month, Bhubaneswar witnessed cash raining from an apartment window as Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, a Chief Engineer in Odisha's Rural Development Department, allegedly tried to dispose of bundles of ₹ 500 notes. Sarangi, a state government employee, was under investigation for corruption and disproportionate assets. The vigilance department recovered over ₹ 2.1 crore in cash during simultaneous raids at seven locations across Angul, Bhubaneswar, and Pipili (Puri). The raids were conducted at Sarangi's double-storeyed residence in Karadagadia (Angul), flats in Dumduma (Bhubaneswar) and Puri, a relative's house in Sikshyakapada (Angul), his paternal house and paternal building in Angul, and his office chamber. In a desperate attempt to evade the officers, Sarangi threw the cash bundles out of his Bhubaneswar flat's window, but the vigilance team later recovered them in the presence of witnesses.

The operation followed allegations that Sarangi possessed assets far beyond his known sources of income. A team of 26 officers, including eight DSPs, 12 inspectors, and six ASIs, carried out the raids. Videos from the scene showed officers counting piles of currency, mostly in ₹ 500 notes, alongside ₹ 200, ₹ 100, and ₹ 50 denominations. (With inputs from agency)

Odisha BJP chief poll put on hold

Bhubaneswar: Hours after initiating a process for the election of its Odisha unit chief, the BJP on Sunday put it on hold in view of a stampede during the Rath Yatra festivities in Puri. Three persons, including two women, were killed and over 50 others injured in the stampede near Shree Gundicha temple early on Sunday. Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi, who has been appointed as the State returning officer for the party's organisational poll, said that the election for both State president and national council members from Odisha has been 'put on hold'. An unfortunate incident took place in Puri, and three devotees lost their lives, and many others are undergoing treatment, Sarangi said. 'Such a tragic incident has disturbed all of us. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased devotees,' he said. 'In view of the stampede, the elections of the State president and national council members from Odisha, which were scheduled to be held on July 1, have been put on hold,' he said. Information about the election will be shared later, said Sarangi.
