Odisha CM pitches Google collaboration on digital governance, woos top investors at WAVES-2025 summit
During his visit to the city to attend the WAVES-2025 summit, the chief minister held an investors' meet where he held discussions with senior representatives of Google Inc and Canarys Automation - for digital governance collaboration in areas such as predictive disaster monitoring, AI-based administration, data de-duplication in public service delivery and advanced data analytics.
Majhi also held separate meetings with the CEO & MD of TATA Steel TV Narendran and discussed the latter's expansion plans in Odisha in the context of the state's target to produce over 130 million tonne of steel by 2030.
His other engagement was with Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry, chairman of Shapoorji Pallonji & Company, to explore synergies and future collaboration opportunities in the state. He also had a meeting with CMD of Waaree Group, Hitesh Doshi and discussed the progress of the company's ongoing projects in Odisha. They explored avenues to expand renewable energy initiatives in the state.
The chief minister also met Anil Bhavarlal Jain, vice-chairman and CEO of Jain Irrigation, a leading company in drip/sprinkler irrigation, solar pumps, fruits and vegetable processing and tissue culture. They discussed opportunities for investment in Odisha's agriculture and irrigation equipment sector to boost sustainable farming and rural development.
He met representatives of Chamber for Advancement of Small & Medium Enterprises (CASME), Maharashtra and invited them to explore opportunities for MSME collaboration in food processing and packaging, leveraging Odisha's raw material advantages.
The CM invited these global investors to be part of Odisha's growth story, echoing the state's new rallying call 'Yahi Samay Hai, Sahi Samay Hai'.
The state's participation at WAVES-2025 is expected to pave the way for greater engagement with film producers, technology leaders, sporting federations, tourism operators and creative entrepreneurs, said a senior officer who was part of the high-level delegation led by Majhi to Mumbai.

India's retail focus returns to malls as high street leasing falls 26% in Q2 2025
New Delhi: India's retail sector has shifted its focus to malls again as leasing of high streets witnessed a 26 per cent quarter-on-quarter decline in the second quarter of 2025. According to the latest report by Cushman & Wakefield Malls accounted for 45 per cent of leasing volume in Q2 (1.01 MSF) - a 42 per cent q-o-q rise, and the highest mall share in the past five quarters, signaling growing interest in experience-driven, structured retail formats. However, even after witnessing a dip in the leasing activities, high streets continued to dominate with 55 per cent (1.23 MSF) of the market, underscoring the persistent undersupply of quality mall stock across cities. According to the 'Q2-2025 Retail Market Beat Report', no new mall supply was added in Q2, and Grade A mall completions for H1 2025 stood at 1.3 million square feet. As a result, mall vacancy levels dropped by around 77 basis points to 8.16 per cent in Q2 2025, with premium Grade-A+ or superior malls witnessing even tighter vacancies at just 4.28 per cent. This highlights the growing demand for premium retail assets and further strengthens landlord leverage in prime locations. Meanwhile, average mainstreet rents remained stable on a q-o-q basis, while recording a healthy 6 per cent y-o-y rise. Suvishesh Valsan, Head, Research India at Cushman & Wakefield said, "High streets remained the dominant driver of activity, while vacancy levels in Grade-A malls have tightened further - reflecting a clear and growing preference for high-quality and experience-led retail spaces. Looking ahead, we remain optimistic. Nearly 4 MSF of new Grade A supply is expected in the second half of the year, particularly across key metros such as Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Hyderabad" He stated that the growing interest from international brands and the sharp uptick in leasing across categories like wellness and grocery -- both of which signal a broader shift in India's consumption landscape. As per the report, the domestic retailers continued to maintain a dominant position in leasing volume with 86 per cent share (1.93 MSF). The quarter also witnessed a notable uptake in international retailer participation, whose share rose to 14 per cent with 0.31 MSF of leasing activity, up from 8.5 per cent in the previous quarter. This growth was largely driven by malls, which remain the preferred format for global brands seeking structured environments, brand visibility, and curated customer experiences. In terms of cities, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi-NCR emerged as the top-performing markets, recording leasing volumes of 0.76 MSF, 0.52 MSF and 0.3 MSF respectively- collectively accounting for over 70 per cent of the total leasing activity in the quarter. They were followed by Pune (0.23 MSF), Bengaluru (0.18 MSF), Chennai (0.16 MSF), Kolkata (0.05 MSF) and Ahmedabad (0.04 MSF).

Draft data protection act receives 6,915 inputs, says govt
New Delhi: The draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2025 has received 6,915 feedback/inputs from citizens and stakeholders, the government has informed. The DPDP Act is a comprehensive data privacy law to regulate the processing of digital personal data. It balances the rights of individuals to protect their personal data with the need for lawful data processing. 'The policies of government of India are aimed at ensuring a safe, trusted, and accountable cyberspace for all users. Capacity building and awareness are important components of the Government's IT security strategy,' said Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, in the Rajya Sabha. Regular training programs are conducted across sectors to build IT security skills among officials and professionals. Public awareness campaigns such as Cyber Security Awareness Month and Safer Internet Day promote online safety, secure digital transactions and cyber hygiene, the minister added. CyberShakti programme, launched in October 2024, aims to build a skilled women workforce in cybersecurity. Under Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) programme, 3,637 workshops have been conducted, reaching over 8.2 lakh+ participants, including academia, law enforcement, government personnel, women, and the general public Also, multilingual awareness materials such as handbooks, videos, posters, and advisories (including on deepfakes) are widely disseminated. Some of the key measures taken by government to strengthen cybersecurity are the establishment of National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) for protection of critical information infrastructure in the country (Section 70A of IT Act, 2000); Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) designated as the national agency for responding to cyber security incidents (Section 70B of IT Act); National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) implemented by the CERT-In detects cybersecurity threats, facilitates coordination among different agencies by sharing with them the information to mitigate cybersecurity threats. The DPDP Act provides a comprehensive framework for the protection of digital personal data of individuals while making Data Fiduciaries accountable for personal data breaches. Data fiduciaries are required to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to prevent personal data breaches by taking reasonable security safeguards.

VDA begins campaign on new building bylaws
Varanasi: The Varanasi Development Authority has intensified its campaign to make people aware of the UP Development Authority Building Construction and Development Bylaws-2025, as well as the Model Zoning Regulation-2025. Speaking to TOI after the launch of the awareness campaign, VDA vice chairman Pulkit Garg said that following the state govt's approval of the Building Construction and Development Bylaws-2025, which aims to streamline construction processes, promote green buildings, and encourage vertical growth, the authority in Varanasi has started its promotion. By holding workshops and other events, the agency is highlighting how it will be beneficial for builders and building owners. Concerns generated by provisions like approving maps along with a minimum of 9 meters of existing roads only, in new developing areas, are also being tackled by officials. The first major workshop in regards to this was organised by the VDA on July 24 at the cultural complex Chowkaghat.
