I'm a TV critic and these are 3 Netflix series you can binge in one night

Any Netflix user can easily spend more time browsing through possible options than actually watching something. The offering is changing on a near daily basis, it can be difficult to know what to dedicate most of your binging time to. As a television critic, it's part of the job to have an answer to that question. So what about options that make the most of your time? A series that will get you hooked and able to binge watch, in just a single evening? The picks below imagine you settling down between 3 and 4pm, you'll probably be ordering food in, unless you're talented enough to binge on a second screen while cooking. We'll aim to have you rolling credits on the final episode in time for bed, although that could be a little after midnight. This does rule out many hit shows with multiple seasons, you'll definitely need more than one sitting for that and so they can wait a little longer. Nevertheless, here are my top three recommendations. A second season of Supacell is on the way (Image: Netflix) Supacell Seasons: 1 Episodes: 6 Approx. total runtime: 5 1/4 hours Supacell is about a group of five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. They have little in common except for one thing: they are all Black South Londoners. It is down to one man, Michael Lasaki, to bring them all together in order to save the woman he loves. While the storyline sets up a superhero story, there are touches of social commentary on real-world issues such as racial profiling, knife crime, and workplace inequality. Being a British made series, it comes in at a pacey six episodes. It boasts a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% score and was even nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Drama category. While there is only one season to catch up on right now, a second is reported to be on the way. There is no better time to make sure you're ready for when that lands. One fan said: "Excellent first season. Fascinating take on the superhero genre. Well written and well acted. Can't help but be drawn into the characters. Can't wait for season 2!" Supacell is streaming on Netflix. American Vandal Fans should at least binge the first season of American Vandal (Image: Netflix) Seasons: 2 Episodes: 16 Approx. total runtime: Season One: 4 3/4 hours Season Two: 4 1/2 hours While there are two seasons of American Vandal, most episodes only stretch to around 30 minutes. The exception is both finales last about 40 minutes total. This makes a one session binge significantly easier. Like Supacell, it also boasts a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating. However, if you believe fans who shared their opinion of the series on Reddit, then it is only really the first season you need to catch up on. American Vandal is for those who believe they have watched every true crime documentary available on Netflix. It smartly subverts the genre to comedic effect. Utilising a mockumentary style, the first season follows the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left 27 cars belonging to staff vandalized with phallic images. Senior class clown Dylan Maxwell is blamed for the incident and expelled. An aspiring filmmaker and fellow student Peter Maldonado, launches his own investigation into the incident, with help from his friend Sam Ecklund. They are determined to uncover whether Dylan was the one truly behind the crime. The second season follows Peter and Sam as they investigate a new crime. They are essentially hired by a different school to make a follow up film after their cafeteria's lemonade is contaminated by someone calling themselves The Turd Burglar. One fan claimed: "This is the only series on Netflix that I have binged in the true sense of the word. The writing is superb, combining mystery and hilarity. Don't miss it." American Vandal is streaming on Netflix. Living With Yourself Fans say the 2018 title is the epitome of binge worthy (Image: Netflix) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 8 Approx. total runtime: 3 1/2 hours Most fans agree that this is a binge worthy limited series. It stars comedy favourites Paul Rudd and Aisling Bea and its premise could be an idea for a Black Mirror episode. However this story goes on for a manageable eight instalments. Miles, played by Rudd is a man struggling in life. When he undergoes a novel spa treatment that promises to make him a better person, he finds he's been replaced by a new and improved version of himself. As he deals with the unintended consequences of his actions, Miles finds he must fight for his wife Kate (Bea), his career, and his very identity. A fan posted about the show saying: "So perfectly binge worthy, and the only real way to watch it! Classic Paul Rudd- multi-faceted, multi-talented. Can't imagine anyone else in this combination sci-fi dramedy & thoughtful statement on science & society. Very well cast. Absolutely PERFECT ending!!" Living With Yourself is streaming on Netflix.

Dumb and Dumber fans only now noticing clever detail three decades after release

Fans of '90s hit comedy Dumb and Dumber are only now realising a clever detail from the movie, which is widely regarded among the funniest films of all time. Dumb and Dumber opened at number one at the box office and earned a whopping $247 million against a relatively small budget of €17 million. It is a standout film in the careers of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, who played the protagonists of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne respectively. While it's been 31 years since Dumb and Dumber first hit our screens, a clever detail in the movie has only recently surfaced on Reddit, leaving fans of the film in stitches as they remember their first experiences watching it, The Mirror reports. On Reddit's 'Movie Details' thread, one user highlighted a subtle joke that went over the heads of many viewers over the past three decades. A deleted scene from the movie had revealed the joke but it came as a surprise to most when it was pointed out. The Redditor pointed out: "In 'Dumb and Dumber,' Lloyd Christmas was in love with Mary Swanson. Had they gotten married and she'd taken his last name, she'd be named Mary Christmas. It's never mentioned in the movie." YardBarker further explained that this was not simply a coincidence, as evidenced by a deleted scene where Harry pieces together the connection, but ultimately, the filmmakers chose not to draw attention to the joke. When the deleted scene was shared on the Reddit thread, it received some criticism from users who failed to find it amusing. One commenter wrote: "Wow...I've seen a few deleted scenes and am glad they were deleted". Another user echoed this sentiment, stating: "I've seen an uncut version on TV a long time ago, and was like what the f*** is this? Over the top crude humour. It totally killed the innocent stupidity of the characters". One user joked, "So basically the sequel?" while another Reddit user poked fun, saying they act "like that doesn't exist". A fellow user chimed in, "Wise man. I still refuse to see it as well. In some alternate reality, there was a sequel that was true to the original and hilarious. That's what I tell myself anyway." The Farrelly brothers-led movie is considered one of the funniest of all time but it only holds a modest 67 per cent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Dumb and Dumber spawned an animated TV series, a 2003 prequel, and a 2014 sequel but it is the original that truly holds up among the greatest comedies of all time, with many reminiscing fondly of their first time watching. Many social media users have shared fond memories of the film, saying they were "obsessed" with it as a kid and had watched it so many times it was "burned into their brain," finding it "hilarious".

Beginner's pluck: Full-time writer and mother Daria Lavelle

From a creative family, literature has always played a large part in Daria's life. 'I was an imaginative child,' she says. 'I invented stories and games, and at 15, I started writing seriously.' She won some teenage writing awards for short stories, and had a play performed when she was at college. 'From the start my writing had a speculative element, of fantasy and magic.' Daria worked in advertising as a brand strategist for 10 years, but she didn't stop writing. I continuously wrote novels. An agent sent out two YA novels, but they died. She started writing Aftertaste in 2019. 'It was my thesis project,' she says. 'During the MFA they matched students with agents. Lucy Carson showed great passion about the novel.' It has sold to 15 territories, and the movie rights sold to Sony. Who is Daria Lavelle? Date/ place of birth: 1987/ Kyiv, Ukraine. 'I was 2 when we emigrated.' Education: Public school in New Jersey; Princeton University, creative writing and comparative literature; Sarah Lawrence College, New York, MFA in fine arts in writing with a speculative fiction focus. Home: New Jersey. Family: Husband James, twins aged 7, and an 18-month-old. A golden Doodle, Stanley. The day job: Full-time writer and mother. In another life: 'Writing is something in my soul. But I'd love to experience film or TV.' Favourite writers: Karen Russell; Erin Morgenstern; Kelly Link; Amy Bender; Anthony Bourdain; VE Schwab; Jennifer Egan. Second book: 'I'm working on it.' Top tip: 'You have to build a whole world, with tools to help the reader immerse themselves in the novel.' Website: Instagram: @ The debut Aftertaste Bloomsbury, €17.99 While dishwashing in a restaurant, Kostya mixes a cocktail and discovers his ability to summon spirits through the food he cooks. Rising through the culinary ranks, he starts to connect the living with the dead through his cooking. But it's a dangerous game, that threatens the stability of the afterlife — not to mention Kostya's love life — with the psychic, Maura. Full of ghosts, and delectable food, this novel explores life, death, love, and friendship, but mostly the effects of grief, and the difficulty of finding closure. The verdict: A gourmet delight. Highly original and hugely evocative, it definitely tugs at the heartstrings.
