CM Siddaramaiah to lead show at Backwards Classes sammelan in Delhi
The gathering, orchestrated by the AICC, comes on the heels of last week's Bengaluru convention, where Karnataka's OBC, Dalit and minority communities had converged in a show of renewed Ahinda solidarity.
The Congress hopes to scale up its Backward Classes formula, crafted and championed by Siddaramaiah, to the national stage as it sharpens its strategy for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Observers say this could be Congress's Mandal 2.0 moment, with the party reworking its social justice pitch after years in the political wilderness. Insiders say that caste census data and community estimates are fuelling Congress confidence. 'There's a huge block of Kurubas across the country,' said one source. 'When you add communities like fishers, Edigas, Yadavas, it could point to a social shakeup.'
Despite their size, none of these communities has ever seen one of their own become prime minister, which the Congress is keen to highlight. The Mandal Commission had earlier pegged the OBC population at 51-52%, and when combined with Dalits, STs, Adivasis and minorities, the coalition could form 75 per cent of the Indian electorate.
Leading the charge is Siddaramaiah, a two-time CM and Kuruba leader with grassroots connect, administrative acumen, and an advocate of the oppressed. His emergence as the symbol of a new social justice coalition has re-energised Congress circles.
On Friday, Talkatora Stadium is expected to see a crowd which will rally for nationwide adoption of the Bengaluru Declaration, demand a nationwide caste census modelled after Telangana's survey of collecting social, economic and political data, relaxation of 50 per cent cap on reservation for backward classes, and implementation of reservation in private educational institutions.
The Congress believes the road to 2029 runs through India's heartland castes, and Siddaramaiah could just be the man to lead the long march.

Bhatti Vikramarka attributed the conceptual foundation of the survey to Congress leader Shri Rahul Gandhi. He said that it was Rahul Gandhi's idea to initiate such a survey in Telangana, and this has now had a ripple effect at the national level, prompting the Union Government to consider including caste-related data in the upcoming national census. The Deputy Chief Minister also informed the media that a high-level delegation, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and comprising key ministers including himself, will visit New Delhi on July 24. The delegation aims to brief the Congress central leadership on the modalities and execution of the caste survey in Telangana. In addition, the delegation will meet Members of Parliament across party lines to garner support for the proposed legislation that would enable the inclusion of caste data in the national census. The State Government is committed to championing the cause of social justice and equitable development through informed policymaking based on comprehensive data, he added.

Congress chides BJP over BC reservation remarks
Hyderabad: The ruling Congress party has vehemently criticised the state president of the BJP following his comments suggesting it was 'impossible' to increase Backward Classes (BCs) reservation to 42% and include it in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Government Whip Aadi Srinivas, MLA Beerla Ilaiah, and numerous other Congress leaders condemned the remarks as an attempt by the BJP to obstruct progress on the reservation issue at both national and state levels. Minister Prabhakar asserted that the newly appointed BJP state president was 'revealing his true colours' shortly after assuming office. He expressed strong reservations over the claims, demanding an explanation for the assertion that a 42% increase in BC reservation and its inclusion in the Ninth Schedule were unachievable. Prabhakar reminded critics that similar action was successfully undertaken in neighbouring Tamil Nadu in the past. He challenged BJP MPs representing Telangana to resign if they truly believed the reservations could not be implemented, stating, 'We will see why the reservations are not implemented.' Pointing to the successful completion of the caste census, the Minister suggested that with credible state-level information, such a move was indeed possible. 'That is why the state government has conducted the survey and is awaiting Centre's decision for constitutional amendments and President's approval,' he stated. The Minister emphasised that the decision ultimately rests with the central government, reiterating the state government's commitment to 42% reservations. He urged all BC communities and caste groups in Telangana to 'observe the true nature of the BJP' and actively participate in safeguarding the reservation process. Prabhakar also noted that according to credible reports, the information regarding reservations is currently before the Supreme Court. He expressed a lack of faith in the BJP delivering justice to BCs, citing the party's failure to appoint a BC as its own state president. He concluded that 'social justice is possible only with the Congress.'

BRS slams Cong's dishonesty over BC reservation
Hyderabad: BRS party leaders opined that the Congress party has been following a deceiving stance from the beginning on providing 42 per cent reservation for BCs. A meeting of BC leaders of the party was held at senior leader Talasani Srinivas Yadav chaired by party's working president KT Rama Rao here on Tuesday. The BC leaders of the party criticized that the Congress' real aim was to deceive BCs at all levels, starting from the caste census to the ordinance being brought by the government. Rama Rao discussed extensively on the treacherous activities being carried out by the Congress party towards BCs. In this meeting, BC leaders opined that the Congress party acted dishonestly in every case in the matter of providing 42 per cent reservations in local bodies with the malicious intention of deceiving BCs. They said that even though they knew that the law they brought would not be approved, the Congress government was once again engaging in a new drama in the name of an ordinance. They said that the Congress party's malicious intention was clearly visible in reducing the number of BCs from the caste census to the enumeration process. They said that the Congress party is doing serious injustice to the BCs by not implementing a single promise given by the Congress in the name of the BC declaration. The BRS leaders said that the Congress party acted dishonestly from the beginning in the matter of providing reservations for BCs in local bodies. They said that even though they knew about the flaws and loopholes in every process they undertook, they were now preparing to evade it in the name of courts and legal provisions with the malicious intention of deceiving BCs. The leaders were furious that by presenting the caste census survey conducted with the most flawed and malicious intentions as a national role model, they were not only deceiving the people of Telangana but were also telling lies on national platforms. On the one hand, while deceiving the BCs on the issue of 42 per cent reservations, the Congress deceived the BCs by not implementing any of the promises made in the name of the BC declaration. They said that the cancellation of the schemes started by the previous BRS government for the poor and weaker sections and not starting new schemes was a betrayal of the Congress party.
