Amanah eyes five seats in Sabah, one confirmed under PH-BN negotiations
KOTA KINABALU (July 19): Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is looking to contest five state seats in Sabah for the upcoming state election, with one seat already confirmed under the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) seat negotiations, said party president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
Speaking to the media after launching Amanah's election machinery here today, Mohammad said the party remains fully committed to working with its PH partners despite mobilising its own grassroots campaign.
'First of all, Pakatan Harapan will move as one,' he stressed.
'But when it comes to activating our Amanah members, we have to deploy them ourselves. We will cooperate fully with all component parties,' he said.
He said Amanah is targeting around five seats, including Sulabayan, Tanjung Aru, and Lumadan.
Asked if contesting in Warisan's stronghold Sulabayan would be a risky move, Mohamad responded that the matter remains speculative for now.
'It's not certain we will get that seat. Whatever is decided later will be based on negotiations. For now, we can only mention it as a possibility,' he said.
On whether the seat for Tanjung Aru has been confirmed for Amanah, he explained: 'Tanjung Aru has been given to PH but that does not mean Amanah is guaranteed the seat yet. PH includes Keadilan, Amanah, DAP and UPKO. The final decision will be made once party leaders sign off.'
Addressing Sabah's growing preference for local parties, Mat Sabu said Amanah will ensure that all its candidates are Sabahan, and will ramp up grassroots efforts to build local trust and visibility.
'All our candidates will be local Sabahan faces. Once our election machinery is in place, we will launch more community-focused campaigns to show that we stand with the people of Sabah,' he said. Amanah election machinery Mohamad Sabu Sabah state election

MIRI (July 25): Selected retail traders included in the Rahmah Basic Contribution (Sara) aid programme should have more than one Electronic Data Capture (EDC) terminal, and a barcode scanner as a backup in case of equipment failure. An EDC terminal is a device used to process electronic payments for Sara recipients. According to Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak secretary Alan Ling, in the context of Sabah and Sarawak, having a backup EDC terminal is especially important for retail shops in rural areas. However, he also describes the requirement to qualify for a backup EDC terminal as 'unreasonable and illogical'. 'I have been told that only those with over 120 transactions per day are eligible to apply for a second terminal. 'I think this requirement is nonsensical; this is ridiculous. 'We want to make things easier for the people, not make them queue up for long periods at the counter,' said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak secretary in a statement. Adding on, he said that he had contacted Yayasan myKASIH regarding this issue. 'Yayasan myKASIH has been entrusted by the federal government to manage the Sara aid via MyKad, enabling the purchase of basic necessities at selected retail stores,' he added. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off SaraRM100 aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. This marked the first time that cash assistance was being disbursed universally to all adult citizens via their MyKad. Back to the EDC terminal, Ling said some retailers were only provided with a single terminal. 'This is insufficient in handling peak-hour transactions. 'That's why I got in touch with them (Yayasan myKASIH), asking them whether or not we could request just one backup terminal because traders had been informed that in the event of a technical issue, the equipment must be sent to Kuala Lumpur for repairs, which could take time and cause much inconvenience to both the traders and the consumers.' Therefore, for Sabah and Sarawak, Ling suggested that an agency or non-governmental organisation (NGO) be appointed to handle the distribution of EDC terminals and barcode scanners under the Sara programme. 'This would ensure better understanding of local needs and challenges, and allow for more responsive support in the event of technical issues. 'It would also enhance the effectiveness of the federal government's initiative through the involvement of local agencies or NGOs. 'This is a request from the people and from the traders, for the benefit of all. SMM sues MalaysiaNow for defamation, denies issuing mining licence to politically-linked firm
KOTA KINABALU, July 25 — Sabah Mineral Management Sdn Bhd (SMM) has initiated legal proceedings against news portal MalaysiaNow over allegedly false and defamatory reports concerning the politically-linked company Bumi Suria Sdn Bhd. In a statement, SMM accused MalaysiaNow of publishing 'numerous allegations which are false, misleading, and defamatory' regarding the purported awarding of a prospecting licence (PL) to Bumi Suria, a company linked to prominent businessman and former political aide Datuk Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak. 'At no point in time did MalaysiaNow seek SMM's clarification prior to the publication. The publications were biased, one-sided, and represent a calculated attempt by MalaysiaNow to defame SMM, its directors, and officers,' SMM stated, adding that it would pursue legal action against any other media outlet that republishes the claims. The lawsuit comes after a series of articles and videos by MalaysiaNow suggesting that SMM had improperly awarded a prospecting licence to Bumi Suria for a 70,000-hectare forest reserve area in Kalabakan and Gunung Rara. SMM rebutted this, reiterating that it has no legal power to issue prospecting or mining licences. It stressed that this authority lies solely with the Sabah Department of Lands and Surveys (JTU) under the Sabah Mining Ordinance 1960. JTU director Datuk Bernard Liew noted this yesterday when saying that no mineral-related licence had ever been issued to Bumi Suria. Instead, SMM clarified that it had only issued a 'Conditional Letter of Permission to Apply for a Prospecting Licence' to Bumi Suria following internal board deliberations, stressing that this document was not an approval or the issuance of any licence. 'However, Bumi Suria did not proceed to formally submit any of the required documents for an application. Consequently, on March 24, 2025, SMM issued an official letter of cancellation of permission to apply to Bumi Suria Sdn Bhd. 'These facts were maliciously omitted by MalaysiaNow,' SMM said. SMM also took issue with the use of a photo of its chief executive officer, Natasha Sim, and her name in connection with an audio recording that they claim does not feature her voice and is not associated with her. 'This deliberate act of misrepresentation is unacceptable and unethical,' it said. The issue has drawn public scrutiny, particularly as SMM has been embroiled in controversy since a series of leaked videos and audio recordings emerged, alleging corrupt practices in the awarding of licences and implicating several Sabahan politicians. Two state assemblymen, Datuk Yusof Yaacob (Sindumin) and Datuk Andy Suryady Bandy (Tanjung Batu), are currently facing corruption charges over the scandal. Farhash, a former aide to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has denied allegations that he owned Bumi Suria and that the company had been awarded a mineral prospecting or exploration licence. While confirming he is a director and shareholder, his lawyers have demanded the articles be removed.

Erasing record of non-violent or minor offences under study
AN amendment to expunge the record of individuals convicted of non-violent or minor offences after a reasonable period is being mulled, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the ministry is currently in the process of amending the Registration of Criminals and Undesirable Persons Act 1969 (Act 7). The Act serves as a legal authority to register individuals who have been convicted of offences listed in the First and Second Schedules of Act 7 in the criminal register. 'The proposed amendments have been agreed upon in principle by the Cabinet on May 21. 'Among them is the introduction of a 'spent' mechanism, allowing individuals who have not committed new offences within a reasonable period to be considered as having 'no record' in the criminal register,' he said. He was responding to a question by Wong Chen (PH-Subang) who had asked whether the government is considering erasing the records of those convicted for non-violent or minor offences. Saifuddin Nasution said the legal reform will provide a second chance to those previously convicted to enable them to pursue opportunities such as employment and further education.
