Rai finishes tied-fifth at Wyndham Championship after final round 68
Greensboro (US), Aug 4 (PTI) Defending champion Aaron Rai squandered a chance to finish runner-up as a double bogey on the front nine and a bogey on the back nine saw him sign off with a two-under 68 in the final round to end tied-fifth at the Wyndham Championship here.
Rai shot rounds of 63-66-69-68 for a total of 14-under on Sunday.
His tied fifth place saw him at 55th in FedExCup standings and he will play the first Play-offs event at St. Jude's.
Akshay Bhatia, who missed the cut was 45th and will need to stay inside 50 after St. Jude's to get into the second event — the BMW.
Sahith Theegala, who also missed the cut, will not make the Play-offs.
Cameron Young finally got his first PGA TOUR victory on Sunday after seven runner-up finishes, and he made it look easy.
He had five straight birdies early to build a nine-shot lead and coasted home to a 2-under 68 to win the Wyndham Championship by six shots.
The Wyndham Championship is the final tournament of the FedExCup Regular Season that determines the top 70 in the FedExCup who advance to the lucrative postseason that starts next week. PTI Cor ATK

FedEx Cup playoff field set; Gary Woodland, Adam Scott miss cut
The PGA Tour solidified its field of 70 golfers for the FedEx Cup playoffs following the final round of the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, and Gary Woodland was among a host of notable names that failed to qualify. HT Image Germany's Matti Schmid began the regular-season finale sitting 70th in the points standings, and he finished exactly where he started after tying for 31st in the tournament. Chris Kirk was the only player to climb in from outside the top 70. He tied for fifth at 14 under with four rounds in the 60s, and it was enough to boost him from 73rd entering the week to 61st. The one player who lost his spot: South Korea's Byeong Hun An, who missed the cut at the Wyndham and dropped from 69th to 74th in points as a result. Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, had an outside shot of entering the top 70 as he began the tournament in 75th place. Woodland opened with rounds of 67 and 64 to be near the top of the leaderboard after Friday, but back-to-back 70s on the weekend weren't enough. He tied for 23rd at the Wyndham and finished the season 72nd in points. Woodland was attempting to make the playoffs for the first time since he underwent surgery for a brain lesion in 2023. The first man out was Davis Thompson, who nearly rocketed from 78th place by tying for 11th at the Wyndham. Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark had a fine season and contended at last month's Open Championship but finished 73rd in points. Australian Adam Scott fired a 65 on the first day of the Wyndham but was pedestrian from there. He needed a victory to catapult from 85th to the top 70, but instead dropped back to 90th in points at season's end. Further down the list were Joel Dahmen (No. 93), South Korea's Tom Kim (No. 94) and Max Homa (No. 111). Defending FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler holds a large lead over Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy as the top 70 players head to the FedEx St. Jude Championship this week in Memphis, Tenn. The next number to watch is No. 50, as only the top 50 after Memphis will advance to the second leg of the playoffs. Australia's Min Woo Lee currently holds the 50th spot. Stokes says England disappointed and frustrated but 2-2 fair result
Last Updated: London, Aug 4 (PTI) England were 'disappointed and frustrated" at not winning the intensely-fought five-match Test series against India but the 2-2 result was 'probably fair", feels home team captain Ben Stokes. India beat England by six runs in the final Test here to draw the series. The visitors made a remarkable fightback on the final morning on Monday, picking up the remaining four England wickets quickly to bowl the hosts out for 367. Stokes did not play the final Test at the Oval due to a shoulder injury. 'I think the series as a whole even before this game, it was just all four games going to five days. This one again. It's been toe to toe pretty for 25 days. You know, two teams, two very good teams who have thrown everything at each other. Left nothing out there," Stokes said. 'From a cricket fan's point of view 2-2 is probably fair. Obviously, we're disappointed now to have not got the result that we wanted to give us a series win, there's obviously that disappointment and a little bit of frustration there as well from everyone." He felt the fiercely-fought series was a 'fantastic" advert of Test cricket. 'But as a massive advocate of this format and Test cricket as a whole, this has certainly been one of those series that could hopefully keep off that narrative around Test cricket is dying. As an advocate of the game the series has been fantastic to be part of." On the partnership between England second innings centurions Joe Root and Harry Brook which raised hopes of an England victory, Stokes said, 'Yeah 380 is obviously a very large total to try and chase down but as the game got deeper and deeper, the way that the wicket was playing completely changed from day one and day two. 'So we knew that if any of our lads were to get in it was going to give us a good chance. Harry got us into that position by playing a particular way, putting the Indian bowlers under the immense pressure to take them away from being able to consistently bowl the areas that they wanted to bowl. 'I'm sure everyone was applauding him when he bought up his 100 in the way that he did. Some of the shots he played were unbelievable. So, yeah, the dismissal and the way that he got out was a shot that we seen a lot of him do in that innings, which I'm sure was getting a lot of praise." Tailender Chris Woakes came out to bat despite a fractured left arm, tied up and strapped, and Stokes termed it 'unbelievable". 'It was never going to be a question for him to go out there. He was in a lot of discomfort running between the wickets there, but we've had Rishab up going out and back with a broken foot, Bash (Bashir) going out there bowling and batting fielding with a broken finger," the skipper said. 'Then we go to Chris out there today trying and get his team over the line with the quite recently dislocated shoulder. That just goes back to how much energy and effort that's been put into the series by both teams. Everyone's left a lot out on the ground for their countries, the series, definitely." 7,187 runs, Gill's mastery, Rahul's brilliance, Jadeja's grit, but it was Siraj who had the final word
Shubman Gill and co. snatched the win from the jaws of defeat at the Oval to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. It was a tightly contested series where every single Test went to Day 5. While Edgbaston had a clearer outcome, the other four encounters went right down to the wire, with both sides having genuine chances to seal victory. At Old Trafford, England were cruising towards a win at one stage, but Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar's heroic efforts from the bat pushed it to a draw, which frustrated the hosts and eventually helped India draw the series with a win at the Oval. India responded emphatically in the second Test at Edgbaston, securing a dominant 336-run win to level the series. England reclaimed the lead at Lord's, going 2-1 up, but tensions began to simmer during the third Test when their time-wasting tactics sparked the first major flashpoint in what became an increasingly heated contest. Old Trafford hosted the fourth Test, where India's remarkable rear-guard action helped them salvage a draw. England, however, were visibly frustrated as India refused to settle for a draw early, adding another layer of drama to the tightly-contested series. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj turned the game on its head at The Oval, producing a fiery spell to snatch victory from the brink and ensure the series ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. The series produced a staggering 7,187 runs in total—the second-highest ever in Test history and the most in any five-match series. India contributed 3,807 of those runs, the most ever by a team in a five-Test series and second overall in all Test history. It started with five centuries scored by Indians - KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant (in both innings) at Leeds —an extraordinary feat. Yet, in a stunning twist, India became the first team in Test history to lose a match despite posting five individual hundreds. In the five Tests, 21 centuries were scored - which equalled the record for most tons in a single Test series. Meanwhile, it was the Indian batters who dominated the scoring charts with 12 centuries to their names, equalling the record for the most by a single team in one series. Three Indian players scored over 500 runs —Gill (754), Rahul (532), and Jadeja (516)—a rare feat achieved by only five other teams in Test cricket. Jadeja etched his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian to amass over 500 runs in a Test series while batting at No. 6 or lower — a feat no other Indian has managed before. Meanwhile, Gill amassed 754 runs in the 2025 Test series against England, which stands as the second-highest total by an Indian batsman in a single Test series. Sunil Gavaskar remains the only Indian to have scored more in a series, with 774 runs during the 1971 tour of the West Indies. In a series largely dominated by batters on friendly pitches, The Oval flipped the script,becoming the stage where bowlers had the final word to decide the series. For England, Gus Atkinson claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings; meanwhile, for India, Siraj and Krishna decided the fate of the contest and series. Siraj, the leader of the attack at the Oval, picked nine wickets across two innings. The series reached a gripping climax as six wickets fell in the final 15 overs, including a flurry of four during a tense eight-over spell on the last morning. Siraj ended the match by clean bowling Gus Atkinson, marking the 45th time a batter was bowled in the series—the highest in any Test series since 1984, and the most in an England-based series since 1976.
