Cong slams proposed zila panchayat reservation, alleges ‘bias' to block rivals; BJP replies

Time of India19 hours ago
Dehradun: The Uttarakhand govt on Friday issued a provisional reservation list for district panchayat chairperson posts across 12 districts—drawing strong objections from the opposition Congress, which alleged that the move was "politically motivated and designed to benefit ruling party candidates".
Objections to the proposal have been invited between Aug 2 and 4, with a final decision expected on Aug 6. According to the proposed list, the zila panchayat seats of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Nainital, and Champawat have been left unreserved, while Tehri, Pauri, Dehradun, Rudraprayag, and Almora are reserved for women. Udham Singh Nagar is reserved for OBC, Bageshwar for SC women, and Pithoragarh for SC candidates.
Congress veteran and six-time MLA Pritam Singh, whose son Abhishake Singh recently won as a zila panchayat member from Dehradun, strongly objected to the reservation of Dehradun for women, effectively disqualifying his son from contesting.
He alleged that the ruling "BJP manipulated the process" to prevent Abhishake from running.
"Since the beginning of the panchayat poll process, the govt made several attempts to use power to its advantage, it even tried to misuse the reservation of seats. People had approached the court," Singh said.
Dehradun's current zila panchayat chairperson Madhu Chauhan, wife of BJP MLA Munna Singh Chauhan, has held the post since 2019 and is a strong contender again.

"To stop my son, the govt has committed wrongdoing in the reservation process. But Congress members must not lose hope—we have the support of Uttarakhand's people. We will not accept this reservation," Singh said.
Former CM Harish Rawat extended his support and "warned the govt to "correct the mistake before it's too late". Rawat alleged that the BJP was weaponising reservation to target a specific individual, undermining its constitutional purpose.
Sharing his views on social media, Rawat wrote, "Power and politics must understand that reservation is a right, not a weapon. This constitutional right is granted to promote social justice and harmony. Unfortunately, the authorities in Uttarakhand are using reservation to settle scores with political opponents and for personal gain. We have consistently observed that the BJP is using this sacred right for unholy political purposes in municipal and rural council elections.
Had the reservation for district councils been announced along with others, many candidates might have reconsidered their decision to run for election."
Meanwhile, BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan told TOI, "After seeing the result, the Congress members are scared. People have once again voted against them. Let me remind them that the proposed reservation list has been announced based on the Panchayati Raj rules framed by the Congress govt back in 2016. Now they are opposing it, which is quite hilarious."
He added that it was not the final list and the Congress could file objections to any seat they wanted. "But instead, they are choosing to give false and misleading statements in the media rather than submitting their objections," he said.

Mass disenfranchisement is serious issue: Chidambaram slams ECI over Bihar SIR row

Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the Special Intensive Revision exercise. Remove Ads Criticising the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday questioned as to how poll body come to the conclusion that several lakh voters in Bihar have "permanently migrated" resulting in "deletion" of their names from voters a post on X, Chidambaram said that mass disenfranchisement is a serious issue and questioned whether any inquiry was done by the ECI to ascertain the "permanently migrated" status of enrolled voters in Bihar."How did the ECI come to the conclusion that several lakh persons, whose names are in the current electoral rolls of Bihar, must be excluded because they had "permanently migrated" out of the state? That is the question Before you reach the conclusion that a person has "permanently migrated" out of a State, should not a thorough enquiry be conducted into each case?"How could such an enquiry involving 37 lakh persons have been conducted in a period of 30 days? Mass disenfranchisement is a serious issue, and that is why the Supreme Court is hearing the petitions," he in the day, the Senior Congress leader had criticised the ECI over the 'reports' of the addition of approximately 6.5 lakh migrant workers to Tamil Nadu's electoral rolls and called it "alarming" and "patently illegal."In a post on X, Chidambaram wrote," The SIR exercise is getting curiouser and curiouser While 65 lakh voters are in danger of being disenfranchised in Bihar, reports of "adding" 6.5 lakh persons as voters in Tamil Nadu is alarming and patently illegal Calling them "permanently migrated" is an insult to the migrant workers and a gross interference in the right of the electorate of Tamil Nadu to elect a government of its choice Why should the migrant worker not return to Bihar (or his/her home state) to vote in the State Assembly election, as they usually do? Does not the migrant worker return to Bihar at the time of the Chhath puja festival? A person to be enrolled as a voter must have a fixed and permanent legal home."Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday said that not a single claim or objection has been filed by any political party with respect to draft rolls."From August 1 to August 3, 3:00 PM, all political parties put together, have filed zero claims and objections for the addition of the names of eligible electors and deletion of the names of ineligible election," said the poll panel.

Jitendra Awhad sparks row, says 'Sanatan Dharma ruined India'; BJP MP Medha Kulkarni, Shiv Sena's Shaina NC hit back

Maharashtra: Following NCP-SCP MLA Jitendra Awhad's 'Sanatan Dharma has ruined India,' comment, several political leaders including BJP MP Medha Kulkarni, Shiv Sena's Shaina NC, among others have hit back. 'It has become a trend for the Opposition to criticise Sanatan Dharma... His saying that Sanatan Dharma is a perverted ideology distinct from Hindu Dharma shows you his lack of education, and he is responsible for caste oppression and social exclusion by making such preposterous comments,' Shaina NC told reporters. Jitendra Awhad, on Sunday, made explosive statements claiming that 'there was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma,' and this 'so‑called Sanatan Dharma denied Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj his coronation.' 'The followers of this Sanatan Dharma tried to assassinate Jyotirao Phule. They threw cow dung and filth at Savitribai Phule. This very Sanatan Dharma conspired to kill Shahu Maharaj. It did not even allow Dr BR Ambedkar to drink water or attend school. It was Babasaheb Ambedkar who finally rose against Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti, and rejected its oppressive traditions,' news wire ANI quoted the NCP-SCP MLA as saying. Apart from Shaina NC, Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai also hit back at Awhad's comments. 'What Jitendra Awhad said is not acceptable to me. Sanatan Dharma is a distinct ideology that advocates for harmony and tolerance... What he said is totally wrong,' said Desai. BJP leader Ram Kadam said that Jitendra Awhad's comments are based on the MLA's 'incomplete study of the scriptures.' 'The statement by the leader of Sharad Pawar's faction is based on an incomplete study of the scriptures... Are you defaming Sanatan Dharma?... Will you now do this for your politics?... It is unfortunate that he (Jitendra Awhad) is making such statements solely for the politics of appeasement,' said the BJP leader.
