South given only their money, cess up 600%: Congress debunks Amit Shah's claim in TNIE interview
On the claim that total allotment to five states in south India under tax devolution during the Narendra Modi government had increased in Grants-in-aid, Praveen Chakravarty reacted saying, "not true."
He further added, "It belonged to the states. That's number one. No one is giving. There's not some of your money that you're transferring over. They're not some rulers here. They're not kings here. Number two, the Union government imposed what's called cess and surcharge."
Praveen Chakravarty further added that the cess and surcharge has gone up 600% in the last 11 years.
"And what does cess and surcharge mean? It means I will keep that money only for the Union government and not share it with the state governments. That's what cess and surcharge means. So they've actually kept more money for themselves instead of giving to states what legitimately belong to the states'
Amit Shah had said that the total allotment to the five states under tax devolution during the Modi government has gone up to Rs 10,96,754 crore from Rs 3,55,466 crore, a 209 per cent increase.
Grants-in-aid now stand at Rs 9,38,518 crore—it was Rs 2,18,053 crore during the UPA. That's a 330 per cent rise. Tamil Nadu saw a 207 per cent growth in tax devolution—from Rs 94,977 crore to Rs 2.92 lakh crore. And grants-in-aid increased by 342 per cent—from Rs 57,924 crore to Rs 2.55 lakh crore.
On the Telangana census, Shah had said: What they are doing in Telangana is a survey. We are doing a census. There is a difference. In Karnataka, they tried, but had to scrap it.
The Congress leader reacted thus, 'He (Shah) said that it was a caste survey in the state not census. I'm the convener of the Telangana consensus committee. I'm writing a 300 page report. I think the question was, I remember, if I remember right, that the Union government announced the caste census on pressure."

'Unable To Understand...': Jitan Ram Manjhi On Chirag Paswan Questioning Bihar's Law And Order
Former Bihar CM Jitan Ram Manjhi praised Chirag Paswan as a "good leader" of the NDA but criticised his lack of understanding of Bihar's situation. Jitan Ram Manjhi, former Bihar chief minister and Union Minister, called his ally Chirag Paswan a 'good leader" of the NDA but said he is unable to understand the situation in the state. Manjhi's remarks come after Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Paswan's repeated attacks on CM Nitish Kumar over the law and order situation in the wake of a series of murders in the state. 'Sometimes, even trustworthy people are unable to understand the situation and make statements on it. Chirag Paswan is a good leader of the NDA… The person whose name you are taking has some shortcomings, and before making any statement, it is important to understand the entire situation by looking at the past, present and future… He has some shortcomings, due to which fingers are being raised at the NDA," he said. #WATCH | Delhi | Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi says, '…Sometimes even trustworthy people are unable to understand the situation and make statements on it. Punjab: Use of herbicide to expedite moong, maize harvest sounds alarm bells
BATHINDA: With the harvesting of moong and spring maize at its peak in Punjab, the rampant use of toxic herbicide has come to the fore. Paraquat Dichloride - a herbicide plant killer - is being used massively to quicken the drying time of both crops as farmers are in a hurry to transplant paddy or basmati. Though Paraquat Dichloride is widely used for weeding and grass control, it is being used in the fields in Punjab on moong, also called green gram, and maize. Immediately after the spray on the plants, it starts working, and the plant is ready to be harvested in the next 48-72 hours. In doing so, farmers even overlook the health hazards. The use of Paraquat Dichloride to expedite harvesting when the crop is nearing maturity is being seen as a cause of concern. Paraquat is a highly toxic compound that can cause serious health effects. "The Registration Committee (RC) constituted under Section 5 of the Insecticides Act, 1968, in its 361st meeting on Dec 12, 2015, deliberated to review 66 pesticides, including Paraquat Dichloride, and accepted its continued use with caution, improved packaging to prevent misuse, and training for medical personnel to handle poisoning cases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Further, a sub-committee was constituted to review the toxicity and safety of Paraquat Dichloride," Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Dec 3, 2024, when asked about the use of the toxic chemical Paraquat by the farmers. The Centre regulates the manufacture and use of pesticides in the country through the Insecticides Act, 1968, and Insecticides Rules, 1971, and pesticides are allowed for use in the country only after considering data on different parameters such as chemistry, bio-efficacy, toxicity, packaging, and processing to ensure efficacy and safety to human beings, animals, and the environment. The details of doses, crops, precautionary measures, and antidotes are prescribed on labels and leaflets of pesticides. Dr Hargurpartap Singh from the small town of Nihal Singh Wala in Moga district is running a campaign against the use of Paraquat. He deals with acute poisoning and regularly comes across cases of ingesting Paraquat. Normally, farmers keep the chemical in their motor room or homes after use on crops and sometimes even ingest it upon any disturbance on the economic front or familial issues. He came across two cases in the last week, and both died as the intake caused multi-organ failure. In Punjab, both moong and maize are being sold below the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 8,682 per quintal and Rs 2,225 per quintal, respectively. While moong is fetching Rs 7,000-Rs 7,500 per quintal, maize is being sold at Rs 1,700-Rs 2,000 per quintal, depending upon the quality of the crop Jagraon in Ludhiana district is the biggest market for marketing of moong. Commission agents at Jagraon grain market said the crop fetched Rs 7,000-Rs 7,500.
