Two dead, child injured in Ekurhuleni shack fire

A tragic shack fire in the early hours of Sunday morning has claimed two lives in Nigel, Ekurhuleni, including that of a two-year-old child. The victims were burned beyond recognition and declared dead at the scene after their remains were discovered in the charred debris.
The fire broke out before dawn, catching the family off guard while they were asleep. An eight-year-old child managed to escape the shack fire with minor burn injuries and was rushed to Pholosong Hospital for medical attention.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services responded to the call and found the shack on fire. Community members had already started attempting to extinguish the fire using buckets of water.
Firefighters quickly controlled the fire and initiated a search and recovery operation.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, but early indications point to a heating device being the possible source.
As temperatures continue to drop, officials have warned residents to be extra cautious when using heating and lighting appliances in informal settlements.
'Communities are reminded to use heating appliances with caution during this winter as many of these incidents can be avoided by making sure that all this heating and lighting devices are attended to when in use,' said Maswati Ndluli, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni's Emergency Management Services.
Incidents like this are a recurring concern during winter in Gauteng, where illegal electricity connections and unsafe heating methods frequently result in deadly fires.
Emergency services have urged residents never to leave heaters, candles, or open flames unattended and to install smoke detectors where possible, even in informal structures.

‘Waterfront wars' erupt in Cape Town, police bolstered

Table Bay harbour police are appealing to the public for witnesses to come forward following violent incidents involving teenagers at the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk. Social media has been flooded with videos showing clashes that took place over the weekend, drawing widespread attention and concern. The incident allegedly occurred when two teenage girls began physically fighting at the Canal Walk's restrooms. The scuffle later continued in a public area, attracting a crowd and sparking further unrest. The incident comes as the June school holidays kicked off on Friday, 27 June. Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said police are aware of the incident. 'Deployments have been bolstered in the area. However, no one has come forward to register criminal cases for further investigation,' said Swartbooi. He urged anyone who witnessed the violence to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111. The incidents have brought to light the growing trend of 'fight night', which sees teens gathering to participate in scruffles. These gatherings are allegedly for social media clout. Posters of the planned fights have also been emerging online. According to the Voice of the Cape, V&A Waterfront's Head of PR and Communications, Donald Kau, said security has been beefed up. He said the trends not only endanger those involved but also bystanders. Kau also added that serious action will be taken against those involved in the fights. The violent clashes have sparked widespread outrage online, with many social media users calling for those involved in the brawls to be held accountable. Others believe that teenagers should be accompanied by parents or guardians when visiting public spaces. The incidents have also ignited a broader conversation about public safety. 'Risked it all': Where is Nandipha Magudumana's husband?

Nandipha Maguduman's recent court appearance has left many South Africans questioning how and why she gave up her glamorous and successful life – and her marriage – to embark on a criminal spree with fellow-accused, Thabo Bester. The alleged couple are currently facing charges of orchestrating his 2022 prison escape, defrauding the public, and violating multiple bodies. They appeared at the Free State High Court for a pre-trial hearing, which has been postponed to 19 September. Their trial is set to begin on 10 November at the Bloemfontein High Court. With all eyes on Nandipha, many want to know where her other half, Mr Magudumana, is. Despite being a married woman, the celebrity aesthetics doctor allegedly embarked on an affair with Thabo Bester while he was behind bars for a rape and murder conviction in 2012. At the time, Nandipha was married to Mkhuseli Magudumana, who is a paediatric medical doctor. The former couple shares two daughters together: Ayana and Aziza. But according to an affidavit, Nandipha claimed she was Bester's 'customary wife.' In a tweet posted following her arrest, former friend Redi Tlhabi claims the couple divorced in 2022. However, conflicting reports claim that Nandipha is still legally married to Mkhuseli Magudumana, who has kept a low profile since her arrest. Where is Nandipha Magudumana's husband Mkhuseli? Images via Instagram: @drnandi/ Showmax In Nandipha's 2024 bail application, she revealed that she is currently separated from her husband. In a sworn statement, Nandipha claimed that she met Thabo Bester at Wits University in 2006, where he allegedly studied theology. Official reports have revealed that Bester only has a grade 7 education. Nandipha also claimed that she and Bester began dating in 2017, and he paid lobola for her in 2020. While Nandipha Magudumana's frail appearance has concerned many South Africans, others have claimed that she is merely playing the public empathy card. Some even insinuated that she was no better than Thabo Bester himself. In court appearances, Nandipha Magudumana has appeared to read her Bible, pray, and sing, all while under the watchful eye of clicking cameras. Months after her arrest, the mom-of-two was in tears when her attorney claimed that Thabo Bester had 'forced' her to skip the country with her. In a letter written during Women's Month, Nandipha also claimed that she was abused by many men in her life, possibly including Bester.
