KUCHING (July 28): A new matriculation college will be built in Sematan to enhance access to education in rural areas, said Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan.
He said the establisment of the college is a crucial initiative to empower rural youths, especially students from Lundu, Sematan and the surrounding areas, by providing better opportunities for higher education.
'This college will not only offer more pathways for our local children to pursue further studies but will also act as a catalyst for economic and social development within the community,' he said when speaking at the closing of the Sematan Festival 2025 on Sunday, according to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report.
Azizul said the construction of the college is expected to begin next year once the planning phase and technical approvals are finalised.
He added both the Sarawak and federal governments are expected to work together on the project.
On the Sematan Festival 2025, Azizul expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) for their support in making the event a success.
He proposed that the festival be held annually with a more inclusive and larger-scale approach.
This year's festival featured a wide range of activities, including a powerboat race, E-sports competition, 'rakyat' concert, Joran Challenge, and the Sematan Duathlon 2025, which drew thousands of visitors from various backgrounds.
Also present at the event were political secretaries to the Premier of Sarawak, Abang Abdul Aziz Abang Draup and Niponi Undek; MTCP permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini; and Lundu district officer Awang Yusup Awang Mostapha. azizul annuar adenan college education matriculation

He said despite technical challenges, including an issue at pier number 52, the contractor had assured the matter would be resolved soon. 'We discussed about the bridge being usable by Gawai 2026. We hope all outstanding issues will be resolved and we will continue to visit and monitor the progress of this project,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report after a working visit to the project site in Sebuyau today. According to the report, the 4.8km bridge forms part of the Sarawak government's ongoing effort to strengthen coastal road connectivity and will fully replace the long-standing ferry service between Sebuyau and Triso. The RM848.7 million project began construction on Jan 7, 2021, and is one of 16 major bridge projects currently underway across Sarawak. Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak is actively on the ground to assess and discuss any arising issues. 'Our aim is to minimise the number of delayed or problematic projects in the state,' he said. He also revealed another major bridge project has commenced at Miri Marina, with a total cost of RM6.53 billion. 'The government's aspiration is for all these investments to have a direct impact on the state's economic growth through improved infrastructure,' he said. Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the project status by JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, along with the technical leadership from Perbena Emas and the Sebuyau District Office. Also present were Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang and Sebuyau District Officer Ayurad Iman Bujang. Batang Lupar 1 bridge completion Douglas Uggah

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch announced that each eligible student will receive RM1,200, disbursed in two phases of RM600 per semester via the S Pay Global platform. Open to all Sarawakian students regardless of household income, the BKK aims to ease the financial burden on families and help students focus on their academic journey. The aid is expected to benefit around 42,000 Sarawakian students currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning nationwide. 'The Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has delivered on its promise. This shows that we care, not only about the students as Sarawakians, but because we are a government that is genuinely concerned about the future of our state,' said Abang Johari. Also at the ceremony here were Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof; Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Sarawak Attorney-General Dato Sri Saferi Ali; and other dignitaries. The Premier described the BKK as part of a larger strategy to empower youth through education and enhance Sarawak's global economic competitiveness. 'This assistance is provided regardless of students' backgrounds. We want to cultivate a generation that is knowledgeable, competitive and ready to seize opportunities not just within Sarawak, but internationally,' he said. Abang Johari also stressed the importance of preparing Sarawak's youth to become globally competent professionals in an increasingly borderless economic landscape. 'This is a strategic form of assistance. We have bright Sarawakian students who are intellectually capable and can pursue studies that are relevant to current global economic developments,' he said. He further noted that application numbers are expected to increase and reaffirmed the state's commitment to introducing more student-focused initiatives in the future. Introduced as part of Abang Johari's winding-up speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, the assistance was initially targeted at students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below. However, the eligibility has since been broadened to include all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students with Sarawakian status, regardless of socioeconomic background. Meanwhile, Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, in his speech said the aid is designed not only to ease students' financial pressures but also to motivate them to excel in their studies. A second application phase will open in September, catering to newly enrolled students and those who missed the initial round. Abang Johari BKK financial aid tertiary education

Malaysia strengthens global anti-corruption leadership through executive course for law enforcement officers from 16 countries

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA), in collaboration with the Foreign Affairs Malaysia Ministry (MOFA), recently organised the Executive Certificate Course for Strategic Management of Anti-Corruption Programme 2025 under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), held from July 13‒23, 2025. This intensive 11-day course brought together 17 senior anti-corruption and law enforcement officers from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, and Africa. The programme aimed to strengthen institutional capacity, expand strategic cooperation networks, and reinforce Malaysia's commitment to promoting integrity and good governance at the international level. Launched in 1980, the MTCP reflects Malaysia's long-standing commitment to South-South Cooperation and continues to serve as a key platform for knowledge sharing and best practices. The organisation of this programme underscores Malaysia's role as a leader in development diplomacy and anti-corruption education globally. The course focused on strategic management in combating corruption, including pressing contemporary issues such as intelligence-based investigations, digital forensics, cross-border asset recovery, cryptocurrency-related crimes, and strategic crisis communication management. The modules were delivered by a panel of experts and seasoned practitioners within Malaysia's anti-corruption ecosystem, designed to provide participants with practical approaches applicable within their respective national contexts. The organisation of this course not only reflects Malaysia's commitment to combating corruption in a holistic manner but also positions the nation as a key catalyst in building capacity and strengthening international anti-corruption cooperation networks. This effort is in line with the country's diplomatic agenda to shape a more peaceful and harmonious world with integrity. ‒ July 29, 2025
