New Zealand's emerging whiskey industry finds a global audience with export prices more than Ireland and the US

Time of India20 hours ago
New Zealand, traditionally recognized for its wine, wool, and scenic vistas, is becoming an unexpected player in the global whiskey market. While whiskey exports brought in a relatively modest $1.3 million USD in 2024, industry analysts note that it's the pace and positioning, not the volume, that's drawing attention
Fueled by favorable climate conditions,
experimental distilling methods
, and increasing global demand for
premium small-batch spirits
, New Zealand distillers are finding success abroad.
Its average export price, $11 per liter, well above the global average, places it in the same pricing tier as Japan's emerging craft distilleries and higher than bulk exports from Ireland or the US, which often range between $4–$7 per liter. This signals not mass production but rising luxury positioning.

The country's whiskey roots date back to the 19th century but faced significant setbacks during local Prohibition periods. A commercial revival began in the 1970s with Willowbank Distillery, which closed in 1997. That closure marked a turning point, as remaining barrels were bottled by The New Zealand Whisky Collection and introduced to a global market eager for new flavor profiles.
Today, a new wave of distilleries, including Cardrona, Pokeno, Scapegrace, and Thomson, is redefining New Zealand whiskey. With limited infrastructure, these producers have had to innovate: sourcing local barley, building cooperages from scratch, and experimenting with aging in Pinot Noir barrels or native totara wood casks.
Live Events
New Zealand's varied climate, from the humid Northland to the alpine Cardrona Valley, accelerates maturation and contributes to the whiskey's complexity. Legal home distilling has also fostered a culture of experimentation, helping inspire the next generation of commercial producers.
Exports to Australia, Singapore, Germany, and the UK have seen year-over-year growth of up to 30%, and bottles are increasingly featured at global tasting events. To ensure consistency and build international trust, Distilled Spirits Aotearoa introduced voluntary quality standards in 2021, helping to formalize the category.
As of mid-2025, New Zealand's whiskey sector is small but gaining recognition, offering a distinctive alternative in a crowded global market.

Russia-Ukraine war: Donald Trump pauses key weapons shipments to Kyiv; says 'decision made to put America's interests first'

US President Donald Trump - File Image The US on Tuesday announced that it would suspend certain crucial arms deliveries to Ukraine, previously pledged under President Biden's administration, potentially impacting Kyiv's defence against Russian aggression. "This decision was made to put America's interests first following a DOD (department of defense) review of our nation's military support and assistance to other countries across the globe," White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said in a statement, AFP reported. The Biden administration's previous commitments of munitions to Ukraine have been paused under President Donald Trump's leadership, following defence department assessments of US stockpiles and shifting priorities. This follows Trump's recent directive for US missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. A US official, speaking anonymously, revealed that Pentagon reviews found insufficient stocks of certain promised weapons, leading to the cancellation of some planned deliveries. The specific weapons affected remain undisclosed. Spokesman Sean Parnell emphasised US military readiness, noting that pending legislation would enhance defence capabilities against contemporary threats. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo This suspension of US weapons support impacts Ukraine during intensified Russian aerial attacks, complicating Trump-backed peace initiatives. At the Nato summit, Trump discussed potential Patriot air defence missile system deliveries with President Zelenskyy, acknowledging their effectiveness: "They do want to have the antimissile missiles, OK, as they call them, the Patriots," Trump said then. "And we're going to see if we can make some available. We need them, too. We're supplying them to Israel, and they're very effective, 100% effective. Hard to believe how effective. They do want that more than any other thing.

After a five-year hiatus, Shein, the fast-fashion global brand, is back in the Indian market. This time, it is in partnership with Reliance Retail, the major subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani's conglomerate, the biggest player in the Indian retail sector. Shein is a fast-fashion company founded in China and now based in Singapore. It is known for trendy clothing at enticing prices, and smart marketing that allowed it to attract a large number of consumers, generating USD 30 billion+ in annual revenues. Unlike before, Shein will not run a direct business stream in India, and will be focused on a contractor-based role, with Reliance Retail operating the Shein India fast-fashion application instead and independently running logistics, sales enablement, and customer relationship management. Despite the height of its popularity, the founder of Shein is not widely known. Meet mysterious man whose net worth is Rs 780000000000, owns Rs 2.5 lakh crore business empire, he is… Chris Xu established Shein. He is also known as Sky Xu. He serves as the company's co-founder and CEO. Shein is a fast-growing and popular brand among Gen Z. Shein sells trendy clothing in over 150 countries globally. In 2018, Shein made its debut in India. Shein Returns to India with Reliance, Revolutionizing Fashion with Local Style In 2020, the Indian government banned several Chinese apps and companies, including Shein. Earlier this year, in February, Shein re-entered India with Reliance Industries. They launched a new website called tailored to sell clothes made in India, rather than Shein's other global sites that sold mainly Chinese-made products. 'SHEIN is a global fashion and lifestyle online retailer committed to making the beauty of fashion accessible to all. We believe that the beauty of fashion should be accessible to everyone, not just the privileged few. We have set out to change the fashion landscape in India by leading the development of alternative processes and technologies that enable us to offer a wide variety of choices by reducing inventory pressure and curbing wastage,' reads the statement on the official website of the It further added, 'Our digital-first model meets customers where they are: on mobile devices, online and on social media. We have become one of the most popular shopping apps and continue to engage customers by providing multiple content streams directly within the SHEIN platform and delivering the best online shopping experience. We ensure the vastness of the choices we offer are driven by our core proposition of hand-picked trends, honest pricing, free shipping & assured quality.' Who is Shein's founder? Know his educational qualification Chris Xu, also known as Sky Xu, is the founder of one of the largest fast-fashion brands on the planet, but little is known about him. The 41-year-old billionaire was born in 1984 in Shandong province, China, and is infamously elusive when it comes to the media. He currently holds Singaporean citizenship, which is also where Shein currently has its headquarters. Xu finished his studies at Qingdao University of Science and Technology in China with a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon graduating from college, he began his journey in marketing and learned a number of different marketing techniques, including search engine optimization (SEO), while he was working for Nanjing Aodao Information Technology. These skills would later help him grow his brand into a global fashion brand with Shein. Emergence of Shein It was during this time that Chris Xu saw a major opportunity to sell Chinese goods to the global marketplace. In 2008, Chris Xu launched a company with two partners called Nanjing Dianwei Information Technology, which later became the foundation for Shein. A few years later, Xu launched a brand called SheInside, which sold wedding dresses as a pure-play online retailer. The business thrived, and consumer demand grew for low-cost fashion apparel. Xu rebranded in 2015 to Shein. In 2015, Xu moved the business operations to Guangzhou, then in 2022, the business physically relocated its headquarters to Singapore, and thus, Shein officially became Singapore-based. Chris Xu, CEO, one of the richest entrepreneurs in China Chris Xu, CEO and reportedly the largest individual shareholder of Shein, has been instrumental in developing the brand into one of the world's leading fashion retailers. Shein has created an enormous global market for itself with its ultra-fast production cycles, variety of products, and very cheap prices. Xu is listed by Forbes as having a net worth of USD 9.1 billion (almost Rs 78,000 crore), as one of the richest entrepreneurs in China. Shein received funding that valued the company at USD 100 billion in the first half of 2022, but their valuation went down later that year, when the global market slowed. Shein entered the offline retail market for the first time in 2023 through its partnership with Sparc Group, owner of Forever 21. This collaboration allowed Shein's products to be introduced to Forever 21's retail stores across America, moving the brand beyond just digital. Originally intended to go public via IPO in the U.S., Shein is now planning to pursue a listing on the London Stock Exchange instead.

Biocon eyes Canadian bonanza from generics of weight-loss 'super-drugs' Ozempic and Wegovy

Biocon Ltd. plans to file for regulatory approvals of generic versions of Novo Nordisk A/S's Ozempic and Wegovy in key markets as it races to be among the first few to reap a windfall after patents on the blockbuster weight-loss drugs expire next year. The Bengaluru-based company is seeking approval of generic Ozempic by September from Canadian authorities, and also in some emerging markets, its managing director, Siddharth Mittal, told Bloomberg News. 'I would say that we have the best chance in Canada' to start launching off-patent semaglutide, he said. 'If everything goes seamlessly,' then Biocon can receive an approval to sell sometime in 2026, Mittal added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List The Kiran Mazumdar Shaw-led insulin maker is joining the leagues of the world's largest generic drugmakers, which includes Sandoz Group AG, in eyeing the weight-loss drug market in Canada, where Novo is set to lose patent protection on semaglutide early next year. The Danish drugmaker, which says it controls about 70% of the global market for these drugs, will forfeit exclusive rights in many other markets from 2026, with patents in India expiring around April of next year. That patent expiration does not include the US, Europe or Japan. Live Events Other firms, including sector giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. and China's Gan & Lee Pharmaceutical Ltd., are gearing up likewise for a slice of the fast-growing global market for generic obesity medicines. But the Indian firm aims to be the first to launch a semaglutide copycat drug in Canada. 'I don't expect many companies to have crossed the finish line by next year,' Mittal said. The drugmaker also is looking to sell GLP-1 therapies in Latin American countries such as Brazil and Mexico, along with Asia-Pacific markets like Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and in its home base of India. 'We definitely see emerging markets where there is still under-penetration,' Mittal said. 'There's a huge scope for market expansion.' Biocon was the first generic drugmaker to receive approval to sell the generic version of liraglutide — Novo's older weight loss and diabetes drug, sold as Victoza and Saxenda — in the UK last year. India Launch Novo launched Wegovy in India last month, following Eli Lilly & Co.'s Mounjaro entry, as those Western drugmakers seek to tap the country with the world's third-largest obese population. Eli Lilly's Mounjaro has a longer runway with patent protection, which doesn't expire until at least 2030 in most countries. Biocon will start phase-3 trials for semaglutide in India 'soon,' and plans to file for approval by the end of next year, Mittal said. Rivals such as Cipla Ltd. and Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. also are in the race to develop and market off-patent versions of Novo's drug in India, which has at least 100 million obese people. 'Crowded Market' 'It will be a crowded market,' Mittal said, adding that Biocon is relying on its expertise in making insulin to retain an edge over local peers. The company doesn't expect significant price erosion for Wegovy copies in India since the price point at which Novo launched 'is quite reasonable,' he said. The average price may slip by about a fifth, Mittal estimated, compared with the roughly 90% price erosion typically seen for blockbuster drugs after generic firms rush in.
