The health minister added that India leads the world in hand transplants, showcasing our cutting-edge surgical capabilities and the unwavering dedication of our medical professionals.
Speaking at an event organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) to mark the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day, Nadda said there is a significant gap between the number of patients who need transplants and the number of donors.
'There is an alarming rise in organ failure cases, posing a serious threat to public health and increasing strain on the healthcare system. Every year, thousands of people wait for organ transplants. Despite the urgent need, there remains a significant gap between the number of patients waiting for transplants and the number of available donors," he said.
'This gap is not due to lack of willingness but often due to lack of awareness and hesitation rooted in myths and misconceptions. That's why the organ donation day — which gives us a platform to spread awareness, encourage conversation and honour the donors and their families — is important," he stated.
Highlighting the strides made by India in organ donation, Nadda stated that since the launch of Aadhaar-based NOTTO online pledge website in 2023, more than 3.30 lakh citizens have pledged their organs.
This surge in pledge registration reflects a growing awareness and dedication amongst the citizens towards this shared goal, Nadda said.
'Due to the unwavering dedication of our transplant professionals, India achieved a remarkable milestone of performing over 18,900 organ transplants in 2024, the highest ever recorded in a single year. This is a significant leap from fewer than 5,000 transplants in 2013. India ranks third globally in the total number of organ transplants, behind only the United States of America and China," he added.
Pointing to the gap between requirement and availability, Nadda emphasised the need for greater awareness, more public dialogues, timely consent from families, and robust system to support donation.
'Each organ donor is a silent hero, someone whose selfless act transforms grief into hope and loss into lives. One person can save up to eight lives by donating heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines. Additionally, countless lives can be transformed through tissue donations," he said, adding that organ donation is one of the noblest acts.
Underlining government efforts, Nadda said, 'Under the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi, financial support of up to Rs 15 lakh is provided to poor patients for transplantation of kidneys, liver, heart and lungs. A support of up to Rs 10,000 per month is provided after the transplant to cover medical expenses. Kidney transplant package has also been included in the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana," he said.
Emphasising that unhealthy lifestyle and food habits are among the major factors leading to organ failure and hence it is necessary to take preventive measures and lifestyle interventions, he urged people to adopt yoga to promote overall well-being.
'Ayurveda and yoga offer simple practices to strengthen our organs and boost immunity. We must adopt yoga to promote overall well-being," Nadda said.
He added that Prime Minister has time and again encouraged everyone to take proactive steps towards better health. 'One such powerful message is his call to reduce the consumption of oil by 10 per cent, a simple yet impactful step towards building a healthier disease-free future," Nadda said. PTI PLB RUK RUK

SME IPO: Medistep Healthcares Rs 16-cr public issue to open on Aug 8
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Pharmaceutical firm Medistep Healthcare is set to raise a little over Rs 16 crore through its initial public offering (IPO), which opens for subscription on August 8. The company's maiden public issue will conclude on August 12. The shares are scheduled to be listed on the NSE SME platform on August 18, Medistep Healthcare said in a statement. The IPO comprises 37.44 lakh equity shares priced at a fixed Rs 43 per share, aggregating to a total issue size of Rs 16.09 crore. Following the listing, the company is expected to have a market capitalisation of Rs 61.10 crore. The company will utilise the proceeds of the IPO for purchase of plant and machinery for expansion of its existing manufacturing facility, working capital requirements and general corporate purposes. 'Proceeds from the IPO will strategically support our expansion efforts and reinforce our footprint in both domestic and international markets," Girdhari Lal Prajapati, Managing Director at Medistep Healthcare, said. The company is in the business of manufacturing sanitary pads & energy powder, and trading of a diverse range of pharmaceutical products, nutraceutical products, intimate products and surgical products through a distribution network. On the financial front, the company recorded revenue from operations of Rs 49.65 crore in FY25, an increase from Rs 39.07 crore in the preceding fiscal. Its profit after tax (PAT) also rose to Rs 4.14 crore in FY25, compared to Rs 3.33 crore in the previous financial year. Fast Track Finsec is the sole lead manager of the public issue while Cameo Corporate Services is the registrar to the issue. Delhi recorded 57 ‘very poor' air quality days in 2024-'25, Byrnihat was highest at 66
Delhi recorded 57 days when the air quality was ' very poor ' and 91 days when it was 'poor' in the financial year 2024-'25, the Union Ministry of Environment told Parliament on Monday. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh said that Byrnihat on the Assam-Meghalaya border saw the highest number of 'very poor' air quality days at 66. The town recorded the air quality slipping to 'poor' on 98 days. Patna in Bihar and Haryana's Gurugram saw the highest number of poor air quality days at 132 each in 2024-'25, followed by Hajipur at 112, Asansol at 109 and Greater Noida at 105, said Singh. An air quality index value between 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', while an index value between 301 and 400 is considered 'very poor'. Air quality in the 'very poor' category can lead to respiratory illness on prolonged exposure. Vulnerable groups, including children under five years of age, elderly persons, pregnant women and those with respiratory or heart conditions, may experience adverse health effects even after short exposure. In March, the World Air Quality Report pointed out that 13 of the world's 20 most polluted cities in 2024 were in India, with Byrnihat topping the list. Delhi was the most polluted capital city in the world. India was the fifth most polluted country, down from third in 2023, and home to six of the nine most polluted global cities. The report analysed PM2.5 air quality data collected from 8,954 cities in 138 countries, regions and territories. PM2.5 refers to tiny airborne particulate matter that is about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair and can easily be breathed into the lungs and the bloodstream. The Indian cities featured in the 20 most polluted places are: Byrnihat, Delhi, Punjab's Mullanpur, Faridabad, Loni, Gurugram, Ganganagar, Greater Noida, Bhiwadi, Muzaffarnagar, Hanumangarh and Noida. Days after the report, a parliamentary standing committee said it was shocked that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had utilised less than 1% of Rs 858 crore allocated to a scheme aimed at controlling pollution in 2024-'25. The committee said that air, water and noise pollution had gone beyond permissible limits in the last few years and had serious consequences for public health and well-being. Air pollution has assumed 'gigantic proportions' and has become a national issue, it added.
