Henry Cavill says Highlander reboot is ‘taking all of his focus'
The 42-year-old actor is due to portray Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod in director Chad Stahelski's reimagining of the 1986 action flick of the same name, and Cavill has now said he will be deep in production for Highlander soon.
When The Hollywood Reporter asked the Man of Steel star what projects he'd be working on this summer, he said: 'Highlander! That is taking all of my focus.
'It's a project that I'm extremely excited about. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I'm loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.'
Filming for Highlander had initially started in January in Scotland, with Amazon MGM Studios said to be targeting a 2026 release for the movie.
In Highlander, immortal warrior Connor MacLeod (Cavill) battles across centuries, facing duels with others like him.
In modern-day New York, he must confront his greatest foe to claim the ultimate prize.
Cavill will be taking on the role of Connor MacLeod from Christopher Lambert - who portrayed the action hero in the original series - and Stahelski said he had persuaded him to sign on by pitching the project as a martial arts-focused movie that centred around an intense character arc for the swordsman.
The John Wick director told The Direct: 'My selling point was, to [Cavill], look, you've got a guy that's been alive for over 500 years. He's the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation.
'So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that's trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.'
The Ballerina producer added his Highlander film would be set 'beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong', teasing that it's 'a bit of a love story, but not how you think'.
He said: 'We're bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes.
'There's big opportunity for action. There's a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it's a bit of a love story, but not how you think. On John Wick, I learned a lot on how to bend the storytelling a little ... another kind of myth.'
The Highlander reboot will feature Russell Crowe as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, originally portrayed by Sir Sean Connery, alongside Industry star Marisa Abela in a new, undisclosed role.
Following the announcement of her casting, Abela shared that it was a 'real honour to step into such a legacy' and added that she was 'looking forward to working with Henry and Russell on something this iconic'.

‘Isn't what I would have done': The Naked Gun creator David Zucker reacts to Liam Neeson's reboot
The Naked Gun creator David Zucker has offered his support for the reboot's director Akiva Schaffer, even if the movie 'isn't really what [he] would have done'. The 77-year-old filmmaker helmed the original Leslie Nielsen-starring comedy series, and Zucker is glad to see the new Naked Gun is performing well at the box office - opening with $17 million domestically - and has praised director Schaffer for his work. Zucker told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I'm excited about it because it just shows that there's a strong market for comedy in movie theaters, and spoof in particular. 'People are liking it, which is great. I really like the director, and I just couldn't wish him more well. 'I texted him already, saying, 'I hear the reviews are great, and it's tracking well.' He was very happy to hear from me, and we'll probably get together later in the month when the smoke clears.' Zucker had initially worked on a script for a fourth Naked Gun movie with Pat Proft and Mike McManus - which would have focused on Frank Drebin's (Nielsen) 30-something-year-old son - though Paramount Pictures ultimately chose to move ahead without the original creators for the reboot. As a result of feeling burned, Zucker said he had no plans to watch The Naked Gun in the cinema. He explained: 'I'm not gonna see it, but I don't see any of the sequels that were of my material done by other people, and that's fine. I've told Akiva that I have no intention to see it. 'He actually invited me to come see an early cut of it, but I told him there's nothing I could do to help because it really isn't what I would have done. 'That's not to say that he didn't actually end up doing a good movie. But I don't think I could help with that.' Zucker added he didn't want to be credited as an executive producer for The Naked Gun, even though Paramount had offered him just that. He said: 'I won't take credit on anything that I didn't work on from the beginning. I don't need the money. 'After the agents and managers, it would have paid three electric bills, probably. If it's a big hit, Akiva should get the credit, and he deserves it.' Zucker hopes the success of The Naked Gun will give momentum to his movie that was initially planned to be the fourth Naked Gun film, though is now titled Counterintelijence. However, the director wishes the best for The Naked Gun and is glad producer Seth MacFarlane spoke with him shortly after the reboot's script was finished. Zucker said: 'He spent the first 10 minutes telling me how much he loved Airplane, The Naked Gun and Top Secret. 'I can't get mad at anyone who will tell me what a genius I am. That was a good conversation. I was glad that Seth called, but I told him politely, 'Good luck, but I can't put my name on this.' [But] everything happens for a reason.' In The Naked Gun, rookie detective Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) stumbles into his first big case, and a complicated romance with bombshell Vinessa (Pamela Anderson), while trying to stop a criminal conspiracy. Chaos, clueless heroics, and classic slapstick follow in his father's footsteps.

Halsey was 'picky' before making movie debut in Americana
Halsey was "cautiously picky" before deciding to make her major movie debut in Americana. The 30-year-old star features in Tony Tost's modern Western and explained that she "really connected" with the project, which is finally hitting cinemas later this month after being filmed in 2022. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the movie's LA premiere on Sunday (03.08.25), Halsey said: "I'd been waiting a really long time, I'd been really cautiously picky about what I was going to do for my first project for getting into this world, into this space. "Tony reached out and he was so personable and so talented and I just really connected with the script and the character. Little did I know we were going to be making it during Covid, which was a crazy experience." The Bad at Love singer - who has son Ender, four, with her ex-partner Alev Aydin - added: "And from the moment I read the script until we started shooting. I got pregnant, had a whole pregnancy, gave birth to my son, had my son on set with me, and without giving anything away, it's really serendipitous to (her character) Mandy's arc in the film." Halsey stars in the movie alongside Sydney Sweeney - who had previously appeared in the music video for her 2019 song Graveyard - and was grateful to the Echo Valley actress for answering her "stupid questions" on set. She recalled: "We were actually hanging out a bunch during Covid, so when I got the call she was doing the movie we had like just gone hiking a few days before, so it was like, 'Oh cool, I'll see you there.' "It was just really great to have someone to learn from, to ask questions to - the stupid questions you don't think of. It was my first time on a movie set in a real way; just being like, 'Who do I look at? Who do I listen to? What's the cool code words I don't know, the actor lingo?' So having someone to ask the stupid questions to was great." Halsey - whose real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane - has revealed that she is developing the new Amazon series Bloodlust, although she is thankful that she will not be acting in the dark comedy. She explained: "I started the pilot a few years ago and Amazon wanted it and they took it and now we're getting it on the road. There's not so much that I can say but it's really cool to be part of a project that I don't face. It's quite relieving." Halsey added: "(I'm) just behind the scenes, just the puppet master. Matthew Modine teases ‘pretty exciting' Godzilla x Kong: Supernova
Matthew Modine signed on to Godzilla x Kong: Supernova because he 'wanted to meet Godzilla'. The Stranger Things actor, 66, is due to star in the upcoming MonsterVerse blockbuster, and has now revealed he had agreed to appear in the film to meet the iconic Titan - only to be disappointed Godzilla wasn't actually there during production. Speaking on a panel at Tampa Bay Comic Convention, the Full Metal Jacket actor said: 'I just worked in Godzilla x King Kong: Supernova. That was pretty exciting. Oh, to work with Godzilla. 'When I was working on Godzilla - that's what I was gonna say - I kept waiting. 'I was like, 'Wait a minute, Godzilla is not here!' I'm looking at Godzilla and King Kong as if they're there. And when you go to drama school, there's exercises you do where you come out, and you have to see things that aren't there. 'So I was happy to pretend that Godzilla was there. I did the movie because I wanted to meet Godzilla.' As well as Modine, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will introduce new characters played by Sam Neill, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo and Alycia Debnam-Carey. The film will also see the return of Dan Stevens as Trapper Beasley. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is being helmed by We Bury the Dead director Grant Sputore and written by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe David Callaham. Although no plot details about the movie are known, Deadline previously reported Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will introduce several new human characters who will join the titular Titans as they face off against a new world-ending threat. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova - which is slated to hit cinemas in March 2027 - will pick up after the events of 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Starring Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens and Brian Tyree Henry, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire followed the legendary Titans, Godzilla and Kong, as they joined forces to face a powerful new threat rising from within Hollow Earth - one that poses a danger to both their kind and the future of humanity. Last year, it was announced that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard would not be helming the next film due to scheduling conflicts. At the time, The Hollywood Reporter stated that his departure was amicable and that the possibility remained for Wingard to return to helm another Monsterverse movie in the future. Despite stepping away, Wingard had previously hinted that he had 'more story to tell' within the MonsterVerse. Speaking to Discussing Film ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's theatrical release in March 2024, he said: 'The whole idea that if you've done two movies, like, maybe you should just go ahead and do a third because, as you said, there's a trilogy in there. 'It just depends on how [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] does and how things kind of shape out. I do have more story to tell with these monsters, and I know where I'd go with it. 'I would be very excited to be able to come back on for another one if things worked out!'
