I'm a Squid Game superfan and we need to talk about that Season 3 ending

*Warning: Contains major spoilers for Squid Game Season 3*
To quote the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders (my other Netflix obsession), Squid Game is often imitated but never equalled. The twisty Korean thriller brought not only a totally unique aesthetic to viewers, but a gut-punching storyline that never unfolds in quite the way you'd expect.
That was never more true than for Season 3 of the show which picks up after Season 2's bloody - and let's face it, doomed from the start - rebellion. In the newest episodes, Player 456 Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is a ghost of his former self until he finds himself responsible for the survival of Player 222 Jun-hee's (Jo Yuri) newborn baby.

While he couldn't save his relationship with his own daughter, Gi-hun sees an opportunity to make amends by ensuring this child makes it, especially given it was Jun-hee's last wish that he protected the baby at all costs before she fell to her death.
The show's director made clear that the baby is symbolic of "humanity and conscience", with Gi-hun feeling like he's "looking at his own daughter" when holding her. For many viewers, it quickly became obvious that at some point Player 456 would have to make a terrible choice between his own survival and that of the baby.
Lo and behold that's exactly what happens, but the way in which it unfolds is no less shocking. While you may be able to predict some of the twists in the show, the way in which they actually happen remains astounding and is testament to the quality of the writing.
In the very last game in the Season 3, Sky Squid Game, Gi-hun and the baby's real father Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan) are the last two adults standing, meaning surely the baby could have at least one father figure post-games. No such luck: the pair fight and Myung-gi falls to his death before the round officially starts meaning just Gi-hun and the baby remain, with one player still needing to be eliminated.
While the VIPs watching on think Gi-hun will sacrifice the baby, he chooses to end his own life and in the process confronts them and Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) with his humanity. It is a poetic, dramatic and highly-emotional moment and from this point, we see a huge shift in Front Man as he sits uncomfortably with his newfound feelings as he torches the whole island to evade capture by the Coast Guard.
A happy ending in the Squid Game universe is always bittersweet, but viewers definitely get more happiness than in previous seasons with a number of storylines satisfyingly concluded, including the baby becoming a newly-minted Squid Game winner and the revelation that Pink Guard No-eul's (Park Gyu-young) daughter may actually be alive after all.
But before viewers breathe a sigh of relief that Player 456's sacrifice finally brought an end to the brutal games, we discover there's another branch. After returning Gi-hun's belongings to his family in LA, Front Man encounters a besuited Cate Blanchett playing ddakji in an alleyway, confirming the games were actually an international affair and bigger than we ever thought.
Ultimately Player 456's sacrifice was for nothing and the misery and suffering perpetuates. Viewers that expected anything else missed the point.
From where I'm standing, it was the perfect ending to a perfect show, and I'll certainly be lapping up every spin-off that comes next.

BTS Members Reunite for the First Time Since Military Discharges, Reveal 2026 Comeback Plans

The boys are back. In a Weverse livestream Tuesday (July 1), all seven members of BTS reunited for the first time since completing all of their military service requirements and shared plans for their future. Squeezing in together on a cozy-looking couch, RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook smiled while greeting ARMY as a unified group for the first time in years. Laughing and joking with each other, they shared in a group statement, 'We'll be releasing a new BTS album in the spring of next year.' 'Since it will be a group album, it will reflect each member's thoughts and ideas. We're approaching the album with the same mindset we had when we first started.' The performers also announced plans to hit the road again in 2026. 'We're also planning a world tour alongside the new album,' they said. 'We'll be visiting fans all around the world, so we hope you're as excited as we are.' ARMY has been waiting for this moment since Jin became the first of the Bangtan Boys to enlist in the South Korean military in December 2022. Over the next two-plus years, the remaining members gradually completed their own service periods, with RM, Suga, V, Jimin and Jung Kook becoming the final groupmates to be discharged in June. Leading up to their long-anticipated reunion, BTS has been teasing plans to make a comeback as soon as possible. In April, j-hope told Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe that he anticipated the band's next steps to have 'massive energy,' while Jimin told Jimmy Fallon in May, 'It was great to be alone, but when they come back [from the military], since they worked very hard, I'm going to honor them and give them great respect.' Now that the band has officially confirmed when they'll return with new music and shows, fans will be counting down to spring 2026 to see what the septet has in store. BTS last dropped an album in 2020, with Be reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200, spawning Billboard Hot 100-toppers 'Dynamite' and 'Life Goes On.' The Latest Update On ‘Squid Game: America' On Netflix

Squid Game Squid Game season 3 has ended, but if you think that's the last you're going to see from the series, I wouldn't put money on it. And I don't just mean Netflix's ill-conceived game show. Rather, the end of the Squid Game finale (spoilers) has the Frontman in America delivering billions to Gi-hun's daughter. As he leaves, randomly, in an alley he sees none other than actress Cate Blanchett playing the very Korean Ddakji game and slapping a man that she apparently is trying to recruit for an American version of Squid Game. But the creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, did not say this meant a US-based version was coming. The idea of this scene is very weird, contextually, as the founder of Squid Game died in season 1, and now the Frontman runs the entire game, except he doesn't seem to know about this version. Or maybe the look on his face says he does? It's all very hard to parse, but like many things about the season finale, it doesn't make much sense. But now the question is whether or not this was a true teaser for a Squid Game: America spinoff, a sort of MCU post-credits scene implying where things will head in the future. I believe that some people are convinced this is a reality, and I've even seen a fake Squid Game Universe timeline being circulated on social media. But the reality is more complicated. Squid Game A Squid Game: America series was in fact brought up a while ago. This is still technically the 'latest' news on an American Squid Game, despite being all the way back in October 2024, as we have heard nothing from Netflix about it since. The original report from Deadline relayed that David Fincher was developing a new English-language Squid Game series. This would not be a remake of the original series; this would be a new story, set in the US. It also comes after an even older story that Fincher may have done a Squid Game movie for Netflix. But the last report was a new show. That is, in fact, the last report. We don't know if the Blanchett cameo and the new game reveal are definitely going to lead to a new series, but creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently told EW 'I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.' His main point of discussion was an idea he had about a Gi-hun show that took place between seasons 1 and 2, which would not feature an actual game. And it's likely that if there was an American series, it would be done by someone else, even if Hwang was consulting. Someone like Fincher. Squid Game Is this likely? The last big news involving David Fincher was that he was directing a Brad Pitt-starring sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino's original film. That's still casting and spooling up and will not be out for a while. Though Fincher 'developing' a Squid Game: America show would not be directing the whole thing, almost certainly. I absolutely believe Netflix is going to try to make this happen and not let go of Squid Game. Season 1 has not been surpassed as the #1 show in Netflix history. Season 2 is inside the top 5, and season 3 is likely to be around that. Netflix won't stop now. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
