2025 PWHL Draft Profile: Maya Labad

Yahoo18-05-2025
Maya Labad is a prospect for the 2025 PWHL Draft. The left wing spent the past four seasons playing NCAA hockey at Quinnipiac.
Labad likes to take the puck to the middle of the ice and isn't afraid to get herself to the net. She has a good shot and tracks loose pucks well in the offensive zone.
After four consistent years at Quinnipiac, Labad is excited for the opportunity the PWHL has created in women's hockey.
"The PWHL is an exciting and important step forward for women's hockey, giving top players a professional league to compete in," Labad told The Hockey News. "Having the chance to play in it would be an incredible and rewarding opportunity to pursue what I love to do at the highest level."
Off the puck, Labad is a hard worker who can be tough on the forecheck. She is a good skater who can keep pace at the next level.
Last season Labad recorded 15 goals and 27 points in 38 games for Quinnipiac. She also represented Canada's national development team at the Six Nations Tournament.
Prior to the NCAA, Labad won silver as a member of Canada's U-18 national team at the 2020 U-18 women's World Championships.

McCartney seventh in final on debut at Worlds

Ellie McCartney said the World Championships have been "an incredible experience" after she finished in seventh place in the 200m breaststroke final. The 20-year-old, from Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, was competing at her first World Championships in Singapore. McCartney reached the final with a personal best time of 2:23.79 to reach Friday's final. She could not replicate that time in the final but her swim of 2:25.22 was good enough for seventh place. "I don't have high expectations coming into the final, at the start of this year all I wanted to do is qualify for the World Championships," said McCartney after her final swim. "This year, as the season progressed, we had to keep on moving that target, and I never thought it would be a final." European Under-23 champion McCartney said she would learn from the final and take it into future competitions. "Tonight's swim may not have been the fastest I've ever been, but I came into this meet seeded eighteenth and I finished seventh. "So the progression is what it is I'll take a learning from this time and hopefully apply it to future competitions." Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry will swim in the 50m breatstroke on Saturday, while Danielle Hill is in action in the 50m freestyle. On Friday, Olympic gold medallist Jack McMillan, from Northern Ireland, helped Team GB to a gold medal in the men's 4x200m relay.

Lady Vols basketball schedule 2025-26: Non-conference games in Kim Caldwell's second season

Lady Vols basketball announced its nonconference schedule for the 2025-26 season on Aug. 1, which only includes five home games. Tennessee will play five nonconference games on the road and two at neutral sites. Including SEC play, the Lady Vols will 14 games against teams that made the 2025 NCAA Tournament. That also includes every team from the Final Four – Tennessee will play UCLA, UConn and South Carolina on the road and host Texas. "Including our conference opponents, our schedule includes the top six teams and 10 of the top 20-ranked programs in the early preseason polls," Lady Vols coach Kim Caldwell said in a school release. "We have our work cut out for us, but I believe our challenging non-conference opponents will better prepare us for what we're going to see in the Southeastern Conference. "We're a little out of balance in terms of home and away ranked opponents, and that's something that takes some time to even out. We'll continue to work on it going forward, but I think this year it will allow us to really test our players and get them ready for conference play." The nonconference slate took a step up in strength of schedule from Caldwell's first season. Tennessee only faced three power conference opponents during the 2024-25 nonconference schedule, and it will face five during the 2025-26 season. UT also only played one true nonconference road game last season. The Lady Vols will open the season Nov. 4 against NC State in Greensboro, North Carolina. They will also make their return to the Women's Champions Classic in Brooklyn, New York, on Dec. 20 where they'll face Louisville. UT's fifth power conference opponent in nonconference play is at Stanford on Dec. 3 as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. Tennessee has 10 matchups with teams in ESPN's Top 25 including SEC play. South Carolina is the highest-ranked team in ESPN's projected rankings at No. 1 and UConn is the highest-ranked nonconference opponent at No. 2. The nonconference slate includes four matchups with in-state opponents. The Lady Vols will face MTSU and UT Martin on the road and Belmont and ETSU at home. Tennessee will travel to Belmont next season and host MTSU in the final game of a four-game series. LADY VOLS: Tennessee women's basketball's 2025-26 roster is set.
