Baler machine valued at over a million rand destroyed in fire
The Umtshezi Fire Protection Association (UFPA) yesterday (July 7) responded to a call after a baler caught fire due to component failure on the machine.
Thanks to the quick thinking of the operator, the baler was unhitched and moved onto a gravel road, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby bale stacks and causing further damage.
The UFPA's Warren Blaker explained that although the fire was quickly extinguished, the machine was completely destroyed. The baler is estimated to be worth over a million rand.

Katherine Street and Pybus Road intersection
Sandton residents, businesses, and daily commuters are being urged to exercise caution around the busy intersection of Katherine Street and Pybus Road, where significant construction works are set to continue until December this year. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) announced that the works, which began on July 3, will involve deep excavations, uneven walkways, exposed cables, increased dust and noise, heavy machinery movement, and irregular traffic flow. Read more: JDA unveils R83.7m Sandton road strengthening project to enhance public transport To manage these risks, the JDA has installed a designated and barricaded pedestrian crossing point on-site. Trained flag personnel will be stationed during peak hours to help pedestrians cross safely and to alert them to any sudden hazards. Kenneth Nxumalo from the Johannesburg Development Agency said, 'We understand these works may cause temporary inconvenience, but they are essential for improving the area's transport infrastructure. We urge everyone to follow the safety measures in place and use only the designated pedestrian crossings.' According to the agency, crossing at any other location may place individuals at serious risk due to heavy equipment and unpredictable traffic changes. Road users and pedestrians are advised to comply with on-site signage and instructions from safety personnel to ensure both their safety and the smooth progress of the project. The JDA said it regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the community's cooperation during this period of disruption, adding that the result will be a more efficient and safer transport network for all who use the area. Update: Pothole repairs on 10th Road in Kew extended to July 11
Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) has provided an update on the ongoing pothole repairs at 10th Road in Kew, reassuring residents and motorists that work is now back on track. JRA regional operations manager Khayalethu Gqibitole said that the repairs, which were initially scheduled for completion by July 4, are now expected to be finalised by July 11. Gqibitole explained that the delay was due to unexpected issues that arose during the repair process, which temporarily disrupted the workflow. However, he assured that the team has resolved these issues and is now focused on restoring the road to a safe and smooth condition. 'Our team visited the site on July 7 and is making steady progress. While the delay was caused by unforeseen circumstances that temporarily impacted our schedule, we are fully engaged and committed to completing the work by the end of July 11.'
