Egypt's Al-Mashat urges Arab economic integration at Kuwait financial meetings
Al-Mashat, also governor for Egypt at the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), participated in the meetings alongside a high-level Egyptian delegation including the central bank governor, the finance minister, and the agriculture minister. The meetings brought together finance, economy, and international cooperation ministers from various Arab governments and heads of Arab financial institutions.
The meetings covered the boards of governors of the Arab Fund, the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF), BADEA, and the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID), as well as the shareholders of the Arab Investment & Export Credit Guarantee Corporation, the Bader Fund supervisory board, and the Council of Arab Ministers of Finance. Al-Mashat participated in the boards of the Arab Fund and BADEA, as well as the shareholders' meeting of the Guarantee Corporation.
'Arab economic integration represents a strategic pillar in facing the intertwined challenges witnessed by the world and the region,' Al-Mashat said, highlighting the discussions on the future of Arab financial and economic cooperation, future financial policies, and support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She noted the extensive discussions on stimulating investment, enhancing financial sustainability, and reviewing experiences in digital transformation, public debt management, tax developments, and energy security, all within the context of achieving the SDGs amidst global challenges and changing international financial landscapes.
Al-Mashat commended the role of Arab financial institutions in formulating development strategies and supporting member states, stressing the need for flexible and innovative models based on knowledge exchange and investments aligned with sustainable development priorities.
'Egypt has presented a pioneering model in the sound utilization of development financing to implement strategic projects that serve citizens and enhance economic stability,' Al-Mashat said, referring to Egypt's Sustainable Development Strategy Vision 2030 and its cooperation with Arab financial institutions.
She stressed the need for institutions to consider geopolitical changes and structural shifts in the global economy, including supply chain fluctuations, climate finance, and digital transformation, and the importance of coordinating Arab positions internationally to influence the global development agenda and advance global financial system development.
'Encouraging partnerships between the public and private sectors and facilitating the movement of trade and intra-Arab investments enhances the ability of countries to face challenges,' Al-Mashat added.
The meetings, held amid growing challenges in food security, energy, and finance, focused on enhancing the resilience of Arab financial systems, expanding innovative financing mechanisms, supporting investment in green and digital transformation, intensifying Arab integration efforts, and strengthening partnerships with international institutions. The meetings also included the award ceremony for the Sheikh Abdlatif Y. Al-Hamad Development Award, which Egypt won twice consecutively.

Egyptians abroad require more than just mere remittances: Official
The Coordinator of the Specialized Council for Economic Development affiliated with the Egyptian Presidency, Hussein Eissa, said that Egyptians abroad are always concerned about their homeland, and their interest in it goes beyond mere remittances despite the importance of them. Expatriates are always eager to buy apartments or villas in Egypt, he noted, and as they enjoy clean and well-maintained restaurants, cafes or gardens they have a vested interest towards any developments in the national infrastructure. Eissa continued that in addition to meeting their desires, all that must be done is encourage them to invest further. Certain economic entities must approach them directly, he added, offering them forms of participation in new or existing companies alongside explaining to them opportunities to diversify their investment portfolios to capitalize on the current investment momentum and simultaneously enhance their contribution to the country's development. The new tax reforms could encourage Egyptians abroad to invest more, especially as they see the appreciation for local investors, he said. Eissa explained that Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk told him that a second, third, and fourth package of tax reforms would be forthcoming, and that the goal was for financiers to be partners, not enemies. He added that the Finance Minister also emphasized that he was not concerned with the outcome, as these would come later after building up trust and proper partnerships. Kouchouk revealed that the package of facilities was not a top-down idea, Eissa said, adding that the minister would eventually leave his post, but the employees would remain. Therefore, he personally sought to convince them and gain their support for the new approach. Eissa said that tax evasion is primarily due to bureaucratic complications. He estimates that these complications are responsible for 70 percent of Egypt's tax problem and the weak revenue as a percentage of GDP. He also notes that the other 30 percent is due to deviant or improper behavior, taking into account that the more bureaucratic complications there are, the worse human behavior is, and vice versa. Egypt keen on cementing ties with continent: FM Abdelatty to African counterparts - Foreign Affairs
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty held separate bilateral meetings with several of his African counterparts and African Union senior officials to cement relations, activate bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and enhance trade, investment, and economic ties. This occurred on the sidelines of the 47th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union. During the meetings, FM Abdelatty and his African counterparts discussed intensifying cooperation and leveraging the expertise and capabilities of leading Egyptian companies, especially in energy, construction, health, and infrastructure sectors. They also stressed the importance of coordinating positions in African and international forums and intensifying joint efforts to promote regional integration and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Africa, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallaf said on Monday. FM Abdelatty also highlighted Egypt's ongoing efforts to support development in Africa, particularly through the activities of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. EAPD aims to support Africa's development aspirations through the provision of capacity-building assistance, the transfer of knowledge, skills, and expertise, and the promotion of creative industries, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said at the 23rd African Union Summit in June 2014. It also supports and promotes the private sector's trade and investment role in the continent's overall economic development. Over the years, the agency has contributed to building the capacities of thousands of African professionals and implementing development projects in health, education, agriculture, water, energy, and other fields. Egypt's top diplomat affirmed Egypt's aspiration to maximize African countries' benefit from the agency's programmes and initiatives as part of its commitment to supporting fellow African nations. He also underscored Egypt's keenness to deepen South-South cooperation and support continental integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA). Abdelatty further stressed the importance of enhancing joint African action amid the growing challenges facing the continent. "Egypt will continue to play a pivotal role in supporting development, security, and stability efforts in Africa," he affirmed. He also reiterated Egypt's steadfast commitment to supporting the continent's priorities, the African Union's Agenda 2063, regional integration, and sustainable development. Additionally, he emphasized Egypt's support for specialized African institutions, particularly the African Space Agency, affirming readiness to enhance its capabilities, given that Cairo hosts the agency's headquarters. He also commended the African support for Egypt's candidate for the position of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Dr. Khaled El-Anany. "This support reflects the spirit of African solidarity," he said, stressing the importance of unifying the African voice in international forums to ensure Africa's legitimate aspirations are realized and its representation within multilateral organizations is strengthened. The 47th session of the African Union Executive Council officially opened in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, last Thursday. The two-day meeting focused on financial and administrative governance within the AU. Discussions centred on budget management, international partnerships, and preparations for key continental and global events, including elections for AU commissioners in education, science and technology, trade, and industry. This year's meeting, under the AU's 2025 theme: "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations," brought together a select group of African heads of state to coordinate between the AU and regional economic communities.
