Al-Ahram Weekly12 hours ago
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty held separate bilateral meetings with several of his African counterparts and African Union senior officials to cement relations, activate bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and enhance trade, investment, and economic ties.
This occurred on the sidelines of the 47th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
During the meetings, FM Abdelatty and his African counterparts discussed intensifying cooperation and leveraging the expertise and capabilities of leading Egyptian companies, especially in energy, construction, health, and infrastructure sectors.
They also stressed the importance of coordinating positions in African and international forums and intensifying joint efforts to promote regional integration and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Africa, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallaf said on Monday.
FM Abdelatty also highlighted Egypt's ongoing efforts to support development in Africa, particularly through the activities of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
EAPD aims to support Africa's development aspirations through the provision of capacity-building assistance, the transfer of knowledge, skills, and expertise, and the promotion of creative industries, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said at the 23rd African Union Summit in June 2014.
It also supports and promotes the private sector's trade and investment role in the continent's overall economic development.
Over the years, the agency has contributed to building the capacities of thousands of African professionals and implementing development projects in health, education, agriculture, water, energy, and other fields.
Egypt's top diplomat affirmed Egypt's aspiration to maximize African countries' benefit from the agency's programmes and initiatives as part of its commitment to supporting fellow African nations.
He also underscored Egypt's keenness to deepen South-South cooperation and support continental integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA).
Abdelatty further stressed the importance of enhancing joint African action amid the growing challenges facing the continent.
"Egypt will continue to play a pivotal role in supporting development, security, and stability efforts in Africa," he affirmed.
He also reiterated Egypt's steadfast commitment to supporting the continent's priorities, the African Union's Agenda 2063, regional integration, and sustainable development.
Additionally, he emphasized Egypt's support for specialized African institutions, particularly the African Space Agency, affirming readiness to enhance its capabilities, given that Cairo hosts the agency's headquarters.
He also commended the African support for Egypt's candidate for the position of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Dr. Khaled El-Anany.
"This support reflects the spirit of African solidarity," he said, stressing the importance of unifying the African voice in international forums to ensure Africa's legitimate aspirations are realized and its representation within multilateral organizations is strengthened.
The 47th session of the African Union Executive Council officially opened in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, last Thursday. The two-day meeting focused on financial and administrative governance within the AU.
Discussions centred on budget management, international partnerships, and preparations for key continental and global events, including elections for AU commissioners in education, science and technology, trade, and industry.
This year's meeting, under the AU's 2025 theme: "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations," brought together a select group of African heads of state to coordinate between the AU and regional economic communities.

During meetings on the sidelines of a ministerial summit, Abdelatty discussed the situation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and the EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica. The foreign minister briefed the officials on Egypt's efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and to resolve outstanding issues in the negotiations. Egypt's PM orders 60,000 new homes for Alexandria's unsafe buildings

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Tuesday ordered authorities to immediately identify land to build 60,000 new housing units in Alexandria for residents of dilapidated buildings, describing it as a project to save lives. The directive came during a visit to the coastal city to review a portfolio of major development projects, the prime minister's office said in a statement. 'This project is to save the lives of the people of Alexandria living in these dangerous buildings,' Madbouly said, stressing that work should begin immediately. In response, Housing Minister Sherif El-Sherbiny said his ministry would coordinate with the governorate to provide the required land. Alexandria's governor, Ahmed Khaled Hassan Said, noted that a precise inventory of the buildings slated for demolition already exists. During his visit, Madbouly said his government was keen to follow up on the progress of various projects to enhance Alexandria's value as a distinguished economic and tourist destination while preserving its historical character. The prime minister was briefed by the governor on the governorate's development projects. Said stated that 63 projects worth about 90.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($1.89 bn) had been completed, with 31 others currently underway. The roads and transport sector has received a significant portion of the investment, with about 200 km of roads completed and another 117 km currently under construction, including the expansion of the city's famous Corniche road. The briefing also covered progress on the Abu Qir Metro and the development of the Raml Tram. Madbouly also directed officials to immediately begin procedures to convert 200 public buses to run on natural gas as part of a push towards green transport. The governor also outlined the city's preparations for the 2025 summer season, which include upgrading beach search and rescue systems, developing city cleaning and beautification programs, and standardising the appearance of beach facilities. Madbouly reviewed several investment opportunities in the tourism and hotel sector and directed that a follow-up meeting be held to discuss them.

Egypt, EU, and Italy launch €24m integrated rural development project

Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, inaugurated the first technical committee meeting of the Integrated Rural Development Project, joined by European Union Ambassador to Cairo Angelina Eichhorst, Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni, and Head of Italian Development Cooperation Tibario Chiari. Funded through a €24m grant from the European Union, the project is implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and focuses on improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the governorates of Sohag, Assiut, and Beni Suef. Its scope includes strengthening agricultural extension services, livestock production, plant health, and field irrigation systems. Minister Farouk highlighted the project as a significant step towards sustainable development in Upper Egypt, reflecting the government's commitment to social justice and better living standards in rural areas. He noted that by widening access to economic opportunities and essential services, the project aims to empower local communities and enhance resilience. Farouk described the initiative as a comprehensive development model that combines targeted interventions to bolster agricultural cooperatives and improve the efficiency of agricultural value chains. These measures, he explained, will help increase productivity and incomes, reduce losses, and raise the competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural products both locally and internationally. The minister also emphasised the project's role in creating new opportunities for rural women and youth through dedicated programmes that provide training, technical support, and access to finance—enabling them to become active contributors to economic and social development within their communities. Farouk further praised the initiative as an example of strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, aligning with Egypt's Vision 2030, which calls for integrated rural development balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities. He affirmed Egypt's openness to expanding cooperation with the EU in areas such as plant and livestock production, export market access, and attracting European investment to the agricultural sector. EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst welcomed the collaboration, describing Egypt as a 'key strategic partner for the EU.' She affirmed the EU's readiness to work with Egypt in rural development, agriculture, and technology transfer, while stressing the importance of maximising the impact of the grant through effective implementation. Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni commended the partnership and the joint efforts to support agricultural development in the project's target governorates. He also invited Minister Farouk and a technical delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture to visit Italy to explore cooperative models as part of Egypt's broader strategy to modernise its agricultural cooperative system.
