How to watch the MLB Tokyo Series, baseball's international opener for the Cubs and Dodgers

New York Times17-03-2025
It's time to set our alarms, fantasy lineups and metaphysical expectations … because Major League Baseball is back in our lives. The season opener in Japan, showcasing the starry Chicago Cubs and even starrier Los Angeles Dodgers, catches American audiences early in the morning Tuesday (5 a.m. local time in Chicago and 3 a.m. in L.A.). Thus begins what Brooks Robinson called 'passion to the point of obsession,' and what Ebby LaLoosh realized to be 'a very simple game.'

Three of the four scheduled starters hail from Japan. Tuesday's matchup will be between Chicago's Shota Imanaga and LA's Yoshinobu Yamamoto, while fellow Dodger Roki Sasaki takes the bump Wednesday against Cubs southpaw Justin Steele. Before this year, the only Japanese players to throw an MLB pitch at the Tokyo Dome were Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideki Okajima and Yusei Kikuchi.
On the other side, at the plate, Japanese national and Chicago outfielder Seiya Suzuki is taking batting practice swings with a samurai sword.
The defending champion Dodgers harbor colossal expectations for 2025. Not every World Series winner gets the chance to run it back with the same roster (our apologies, Marlins). Seldom few give it a go with a new ace pitcher added to the staff … let alone two. The Japanese phenom Sasaki and two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell both chose the blue and white this winter. They join an absolutely stacked squad with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and so many other solid contributors.
The Cubs' offseason was headlined by the Kyle Tucker acquisition. It was one of the franchise's most aggressive moves in years. Tucker, who just turned 28, averaged 30 home runs, 104 RBI and 23 steals in his last three healthy seasons in Houston. He had 23 long balls across just 78 games in 2024, missing half the campaign with a shin fracture. Chicago also bolstered its pitching with fiery closer Ryan Pressly and veteran lefty Matt Boyd.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden predicts that both teams will win their respective divisions.
Cubs beat writer Sahadev Sharma on Chicago's pitching:
'The Cubs continue to keep tabs on free-agent pitchers, checking in on Lance Lynn and others, but they're happy with their depth and don't appear to be on the verge of adding anyone to a major-league deal just yet.
'I think we're in a good place,' Counsell said of his pitching staff. 'Essentially because we're healthy. But we have nine games until (domestic) Opening Day. A lot can change between now and then. Something will happen, I'm sure.''
Last year's series: The Cubs won four of six meetings with the eventual World Series champs. They averaged a full seven runs per game.
Last year's rankings: The Dodgers were second in runs, third in homers and fourth in batting average. They finished 13th in team ERA. The Cubs were 10th in ERA but fell below league averages in slugging and OPS.

Taylor Fritz beats Canadian Gabriel Diallo in Toronto in 3rd round of National Bank Open

TORONTO (AP) — Second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States beat 6-foot-8 Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 on Friday night in the third round of the National Bank Open. 'I thought the crowd was (very) nice for me playing the last player in the tournament from Canada,' Fritz said. 'I thought it was going to be a little bit more hostile. But I guess everyone is just so nice. I've dealt with a lot worse.' Fritz set up a fourth-round match in the hard-court event with 19th-seeded Jiri Lehecka of Czechia. Lehecka beat 15th-seeded Arthur Fils of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 27-year-old Fritz is No. 4 in the world. He has 10 career ATP Tour titles, winning this year on grass at Eastbourne and Stuttgart. In the late match, fourth-seeded Ben Shelton outlasted fellow American Brandon Nakashima 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (5). Shelton will face 13th-seeded Flavio Cobolli of Italy. In the afternoon, sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia beat Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. 'In the second and third sets, I was able to play more aggressive, fewer mistakes,' Rublev said. 'Let's see what's happening next, I'm super excited and motivated.' Seventh-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States edged Aleksandar Vukic of Australia 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to set up a match with Washington winner Alex de Minaur of Australia. De Minaur advanced when countryman Christopher O'Connell withdrew. Top-ranked Jannik Sinner — the 2023 winner — and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz skipped the hard-court event that ends Thursday. No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Djokovic also are absent. ___ AP tennis:

Dodgers 2-way star Shohei Ohtani to start on mound Wednesday. Team goes to 6-man rotation

BOSTON (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is expected to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues his buildup from elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all last season. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game. With the Japanese superstar working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation. They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation. 'Shohei is going to go on Wednesday and then he'll probably pitch the following Wednesday, so that probably lends itself to the six-man,' Roberts said. In Ohtani's last start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 46 pitches, 30 for strikes. Roberts feels like this season is sort of a rehab year in the big leagues and doesn't foresee the team extending Ohtani's workload deep into games for a while. 'I think this whole year on the pitching side is sort of rehab, maintenance,' he said. 'We're not going to have the reins off where we're going to say: 'Hey you can go 110 pitches.' I don't see that happening for quite some time. I think that staying at four (innings) for a bit, then build up to five and we'll see where we can go from there.' Also Sunday, the club activated right-handed reliever Blake Treinen from the injured list and recalled left-hander Justin Wrobleski. The 37-year-old Treinen was a big part of last season's run to the World Series title, picking up two victories in the Series against the New York Yankees. He has been sidelined since April 19 because of forearm tightness. 'I think the only thing I'm going to be mindful of is the up-down,' Roberts said on Treinen's usage. 'To come into an inning of leverage, I have no problem.' Wrobleski, 25, is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He's a starter now, but Roberts said he'll work out of the bullpen. 'Just trying to get a quality arm, get some length, potentially using him in two-inning stints, three-inning stints is going to be helpful for our 'pen," Roberts said. 'The goal is to get the best pitchers on your roster in whatever role.' To make room on the roster, LA optioned right-handers Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez. ___ AP MLB: Ken Powtak, The Associated Press
