Over 6,900 PMAY houses remain unfinished in Vizianagaram district

Time of India29-05-2025
VISAKHAPATNAM: Of the nearly 11,000 houses sanctioned under the
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
(
PMAY
) several years ago, only 41% have been completed in
Vizianagaram district
, with 6,924 houses yet to be finished.
Despite the govt sanctioning additional funds for housing construction, several beneficiaries have not come forward to build their homes. Officials suspect that some beneficiaries are not participating because they already own a house.
Vizianagaram district collector Dr BR Ambedkar said that the list of such individuals should be verified by visiting each household, and a report with supporting evidence should be submitted within two days. The houses sanctioned to such individuals will be cancelled, the collector clarified.
The collector conducted a review meeting on the progress of housing in the district at the collectorate. Speaking on this occasion, Dr Ambedkar questioned the slow progress in housing completion in Bobbili and Vizianagaram urban areas. Officials explained that the delay was partly due to a lack of water supply and theft of borewells, and that letters have been sent to the municipal commissioners regarding this. The collector ordered that action be taken to ensure all borewells become operational within two days.
He also directed that door-to-door awareness campaigns be conducted regarding the additional financial support being provided by the govt. Daily targets should be set to speed up the work, and weekly reviews will be conducted going forward.
He instructed that the 4,096 newly submitted applications for house sites be verified. "Another 2,500 manually submitted applications should be coordinated with the respective tahsildars to verify eligibility. Housing should be provided to everyone and that the list of beneficiaries sanctioned under the PM Janman schemes should also be verified," added Dr Ambedkar.

Koregaon Bhima violence: Sharad Pawar seeks six weeks time to reply on Ambedkar's application

Senior politician and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar recently sought six weeks from the Koregaon Bhima Commission of Inquiry for replying to an application filed by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar in connection with a letter that he had given to former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in January 2020. In his application before the commission filed in February this year, Ambedkar claimed that on January 24, 2020, Sharad Pawar had given a letter to then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stating that the violence that broke out in Koregaon Bhima was a conspiracy hatched by the previous government under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis. Along with his application, Ambedkar had attached a news report, which stated that Pawar's letter to Uddhav Thackeray demanded the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Koregaon-Bhima violence and accused the Fadnavis government of protecting the conspirators. Ambedkar had requested the commission to pass an order asking Pawar to submit a copy of this letter that he had given to Uddhav Thackeray, along with related documents. Ambedkar had also requested the commission that if required, Pawar should be called again to depose as a witness. On April 23 this year, advocate Kiran Kadam, on behalf of Ambedkar, filed an application at the Commission, with a request to issue a notice to Pawar for producing the documents related to the letter. The commission had then twice sent a letter to Pawar, requesting him to submit the 'documents in question', either personally or through his attorney. When contacted, V V Palnitkar, commission's secretary, confirmed that on July 24, Pawar had through his lawyer sought six weeks time to file his reply in this matter. Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray had opposed Ambedkar's application to call Pawar again for deposing as a witness. Hiray had claimed this was an attempt (by Ambedkar) to create 'sensationalisation' for political purposes and delay the commission's work. Hiray stated that Sharad Pawar had deposed before the Commission in Mumbai on May 5, 2022, and was examined by different lawyers. Hiray also said that Pawar had himself never mentioned about a letter that was sent to Uddhav Thackeray — as claimed by Ambedkar — before the commission. Meanwhile, the state government has granted yet another extension to the Commission till October 31 this year. An order in this regard was passed by Chetan Nikam, deputy secretary, state home department, on July 30. This is the 19th extension given to the two member commission led by retired high court justice J N Patel. The commission was formed for probing the Koregaon Bhima violence of January 1, 2018, in which one person died and several others were injured. The Commission's tenure had to be repeatedly extended to allow it to complete its work. The commission would now conduct its hearings in Pune around August 25. 50K houses to be allotted for Delhi's slum dwellers: CM Gupta

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced a decision concerning the slum clusters of the capital, directing the Railways, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and all government departments to ensure that no slum in the city is demolished. In cases where removal becomes unavoidable due to development projects or other reasons, alternative housing must be provided in advance. The CM further stated that approximately 50,000 houses constructed years ago in the outer areas of the city will be renovated and allocated to slum dwellers. She said that the flats will be allotted under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). She pointed out that under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Delhi government agencies such as DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated substantial funds. However, due to the inaction of previous government, approximately Rs 732 crore was left unused. She added that the Centre has approved the utilisation of these funds for the renovation of the dilapidated flats. The CM also stated that if required, the government will amend the existing policy on slum clusters and will even approach the court to protect their housing rights. Gupta said that the slums are an inseparable part of the capital, with residents who have been living there for decades. She criticised the opposition for using slum dwellers as a political vote bank, asserting that her government is making efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi.
