Apple To Close Retail Store In China For First Time; Details Here
iPhone maker Apple says its Parkland Mall store, located in the Zhongshan District of Dalian City, will shut its doors on August 9.
iPhone maker Apple is closing one of its retail stores in China for the first time, signalling a rare retreat in a crucial market where the company has been working to revive its sales momentum. The company said its Parkland Mall store, located in the Zhongshan District of Dalian City, will shut its doors on August 9.
Citing shifts at the shopping complex, Apple said, 'Given the departure of several retailers at the Parkland Mall, we have made the decision to close our store there."
The Parkland Mall store is one of two Apple locations in Dalian. The other, situated in the Olympia 66 shopping centre about 10 minutes away, will continue operating. Apple added that employees from the closing store will be offered roles at other locations.
In a statement, the company said, 'We're always focused on providing an exceptional experience for all of our customers both online and at more than 50 Apple Store locations across Greater China."
Apple currently operates about 56 stores in the region, accounting for over 10% of its global retail presence.
The move comes at a time when China's economy is under pressure from deflationary trends, weakening consumer demand, and declining home prices. Retail sales have underperformed expectations, and global tariffs continue to strain the country's export-led growth model.
Apple's sales in China fell 2.3% year-on-year to $16 billion in the quarter ended March 29, falling short of analysts' estimates of $16.8 billion. Still, the company is continuing to invest in the Chinese market. A new store is set to open at Uniwalk Qianhai in Shenzhen on August 16, with more planned in Beijing and Shanghai over the next year. A location in Anhui province was inaugurated in January.
Apple's global retail strategy remains in flux. While it continues to expand in key markets such as India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, the company is becoming more selective about its physical presence. Recent global closures include stores in Bristol (UK), Partridge Creek (Michigan), and Hornsby (Australia). Apple has also been emphasising online expansion, launching e-commerce operations in new markets like India and Saudi Arabia.
The Parkland Mall exit mirrors a broader exodus by major international retailers. Brands such as Coach, Sandro, and Hugo Boss have reportedly not renewed their leases at the mall in recent years. Earlier this year, the majority shareholder of the complex assumed full operational control.
While Apple continues to grow in select regions, the Parkland Mall closure underscores the company's evolving approach to retail, shaped by shifting market realities and changing consumer behaviour.

India-UK trade deal: India's seafood exports to rise threefold; fisherfolk to get better price as export duty scrapped
Seafood exports from India to the United Kingdom (UK) are poised for a significant boost, with industry leaders predicting a threefold jump in the coming years. This surge is expected to be a direct result of a new trade agreement between the two nations, which will eliminate the current 8.9 per cent export duty on fisheries products, PTI reported. The UK is a major importer of seafood from across the world, with a market valued at $5.4 billion annually. Gujarat-based exporter Jagdish Fofandi, the former vice president of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), said the relief in export duty would take India's seafood export to the UK from current levels of ₹ 1,000 crore to nearly ₹ 3,000 crore in three years. India's current share in this basket is just 2.2 per cent, which comes to around ₹ 1,000 crore at present. 'With the removal of the export duty, Indian seafood items will become cheaper by nearly 8 to 9 per cent for the buyers in the UK, making Indian products more competitive in comparison to other countries," Fofandi told PTI. "We are assuming that in the next three years, there is a potential growth of 300 per cent. Thus, I am seeing that our export will go up from the current level of ₹ 1,000 crore to ₹ 3,000 crore,' he said. Gujarat, with its extensive coastline of nearly 2,300 kilometres, is considered one of the key states contributing to India's seafood exports. Industry leaders believe that the increase in India's exports will also help Gujarat-based fishermen, exporters and the entire ecosystem attached with this industry: Shrimp makes up 70 per cent of India's total seafood export basket. However, it is facing challenges from US and other markets at present, said Fofandi. He further added that the new UK market will absorb some of the shock, particularly helping the shrimp farming industry of South Gujarat. While South Gujarat is more into shrimp farming, the coastline of Saurashtra region is known for its sea fish exports. Certain varieties of fish exported from that region have already become popular among Indians and Chinese settled in the UK. 'This trade agreement will eventually help fishermen in getting better prices for the catch,' said Ketan Suyani, Gujarat-based regional president of SEAI. At present, Gujarat's fisheries export is roughly around ₹ 5,000 crore. Of these, entire Europe accounts for nearly 40 per cent while the remaining 60 per cent goes to the Gulf, China and other Far-east countries, said Suyani. "This trade agreement will eventually benefit Gujarat fishermen because the demand for Indian seafood products will increase after the duty reduction. Fishermen will get better prices with the increase in export quantity," he said. In July 2025, India and the United Kingdom signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), a bilateral free trade agreement, said a news report. CETA provides duty-free access to 99 per cent of India's exports to the UK, which covers nearly 100 per cent of the trade value. This includes labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, marine products, gems and jewellery, and toys as well as high-growth sectors like engineering goods, chemicals, and auto components.

China's Li Auto consolidates electric SUV lineup one week after launch
Chinese carmaker Li Auto said on Tuesday it has replaced three variants of its i8 electric SUV with a single version priced at 339,800 yuan ($47,300), a week after the line-up's launch on July 29. The unusual move came as the EV maker's deliveries fell for the second straight month amid a bruising price war in the world's largest auto market. The updated version will be based on the previous i8 Max's configuration, which include a 720-km range, and be 10,000 yuan cheaper than the Max's 349,800 yuan price tag, Li Auto said in a post on social media WeChat. The company cited consumer complaints over "slightly complicated car variants" for its decision to streamline its offerings. In China, though, it has been common for automakers to offer new car models with three different versions, such as Xiaomi's SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV. Li Auto's new six-seater is its second pure electric model. The pioneer in extended-range EVs introduced its Mega multi-purpose vehicle in March 2024. Li Auto's car sales fell 39.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, deepening a 24.1 per cent drop in June. Li Auto and BYD are the only two Chinese EV makers with full-year profitability. BYD said on Monday that its vehicle production fell 0.9 per cent in July from a year earlier, ending a 16-month growth streak, while sales rose just 0.6 per cent.
