Tesla's entry will raise the bar for EVs in India, says Mahindra's Velusamy R

Tamil Nadu's electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem has come a long way since 2021, when Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) began developing its born-electric SUVs at the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) near Chennai. In an interview with The Times of India , Velusamy R, President of Automotive Technology and Product Development at M&M, spoke about the transformation of the state's EV landscape and what lies ahead. Velusamy, who set up MRV and now leads M&M's EV strategy, recalled the early days of building the electric SUV platform. 'When we started in 2021, Tamil Nadu's EV ecosystem was in a nascent stage. There was more curiosity than capability,' he said. Supplier partners were only beginning to develop EV-specific expertise, academic institutions hadn't fully pivoted towards EV research, and policy frameworks were still evolving. Despite these limitations, Mahindra invested in building capabilities by collaborating with global experts across Europe, the US, Korea, and the UK to upgrade the skills of its engineering workforce. Over time, MRV became a hub for innovation, enabling the development of the company's electric-origin SUVs and fostering a culture of component and software innovation. Tamil Nadu emerges as a leading EV hub Velusamy highlighted the rapid progress made since then. 'Today, tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers are actively investing in EV technologies, and the state government has provided strong policy support, including road tax exemptions and capital subsidies,' he said. Coimbatore, where Mahindra has established its Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) centre, has become a key location for developing software and electrical architecture for EVs. Velusamy noted that Tamil Nadu's growing charging infrastructure and its strong tech base have been instrumental in building Mahindra's ground-up electric platforms. Competition from Tesla seen as a positive force Responding to Tesla's entry into the Indian market, Velusamy welcomed the competition in the premium EV segment. 'It will raise the bar, but it also drives innovation. As Anand Mahindra said, 'Looking forward to seeing you at the charging station,'' he remarked, adding that while the immediate manufacturing impact may be limited, Tesla's entry sends the right signal to suppliers to align with global standards. He also lauded the Tamil Nadu government's efforts to expand its EV roadmap to include battery recycling and raw material strategies. 'The state is looking at EVs from a full life-cycle perspective, not just from a manufacturing angle,' Velusamy said, adding that other Indian states are also beginning to adopt such comprehensive approaches under central government guidelines. What states need to support EV development On what it takes for a state to become a successful EV product development hub, Velusamy stressed the need for engineering talent, electronics and software supplier networks, battery and cell development capabilities, and strong R&D infrastructure. He believes Tamil Nadu already has a solid foundation in all these areas.

Nara Lokesh amid language row: Telugu people coolest, speak only development

Amid the ongoing language row in South Indian states and Maharashtra, the Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh's message to manufacturers — urging them to come and build in the state regardless of their language or food habits — is winning to a tweet hailing him as the "coolest politician in India right now," Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's son took to X and wrote: "It's not me, it's the Telugu people who are the coolest. Development is the only language here. Everyone who speaks this language is welcome in AP. " advertisementOn Saturday, Lokesh, inviting the Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra to set up shop in Andhra Pradesh, the IT minister wrote, "We greatly value your ongoing investments in AP, sir. I look forward to deepening it further. I have been reading about your group's expansion plans in EVs, defence and aerospace manufacturing." In his pitch, Lokesh further highlighted Andhra's welcoming nature. "Also, your workforce will feel most welcome and speak whichever language they wish to," he wrote on X. He further said that Andhra would welcome Mahindra's workforce and 'impress you with our speed and approach.'Lokesh was responding to Mahindra's earlier post stating, "We would be proud to be a partner in Andhra Pradesh's journey. Our teams are already in discussions across multiple sectors, from solar energy to micro-irrigation and of course, tourism."Earlier, Lokesh responded to an advertisement posted by Mahindra Group, saying, "Loved the Telugu ad, sir. AP is a large market for your vehicles and I'm sure the ad would be loved. Speaking of which, why not consider a #Mahindra manufacturing facility in the sunrise state Andhra Pradesh to take advantage of our advanced automotive ecosystem and large market. Would love to host your team and showcase the abundant opportunities available here!"- Ends

Indian stock market rebounds sharply amid buying in banking heavyweights

Mumbai: Snapping the losing streak, the Indian stock market closed in the positive territory on Monday, following value buying in banking heavyweights, as Sensex gained over 442 points. Sensex settled at 82,200.34, up 442.61 points or 0.54 per cent. The 30-share index opened in green at 81,918.53 against last session's closing of 81,757.73. However, the index experienced a volatile session, hitting intra-day low at 81,518.66. Nifty50 closed at 25,090.70, up 122.30 or 0.49 per cent. Analysts said that positive results from banking majors supported the market to rebound after many days of consolidation. 'The market remains highly reactive to earnings, indicating that investors remain focused on the earnings front to aid valuation," they added. The manufacturing segment gained today as the government is reviewing the scope of expanding the infrastructure spending to support growth. In the Sensex basket, Zomato, ICICI Bank, Adani Ports, HDFC Bank, Mahindra and Mahindra, BEL, Kotak Bank, Tata Motors, Bajaj FinServ, L&T, Power Grid and Kotak Mahindra Bank settled in positive territory. While Reliance, HCL Tech, Hindustan Unilever, TCS, and ITC were closed in red. Meanwhile, 28 stocks advanced, 21 declined, and one remained unchanged from the Nifty50. Among sectoral indices Bank Nifty soared 430 points or 1.62 per cent and, Nifty Auto jumped 0.67 per cent or 160 points. At the same time Nifty IT and Nifty FMCG ended the session in red. Broader indices witnessed a sharp rally with Nifty 100 closed 121 points higher, Nifty Midcap 100 surged 363.85 points, and Nifty Next 50 settled 278 points up. "Persistent uncertainty surrounding ongoing trade negotiations between the US and India tempered overall market gains, with investors closely monitoring the outcome of these high-stakes discussions for further cues, according to Ashika Institutional Equities. Rupee traded weak by 0.18 per cent at 86.25 as focus shifts to this week's Fed Chair Powell's speech, which is expected to drive volatility in the dollar index. Additionally, key economic indicators such as Manufacturing and Services PMI will be closely tracked by market participants, said Jateen Trivedi from LKP Securities.
