Yaduveer reviews arrangements on Chamundi Hills to handle rush on second Ashada Friday

The Hindu2 days ago
MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar visited the Chamundi Hills on Thursday and apprised himself of the arrangements made for devotees who will visit the Chamundeshwari temple on the second Friday of the Ashada month.
The visit followed public complaints that there was a lack of arrangements on the hilltop the last Friday.
'We had received complaints that devotees had faced several inconveniences on the first Ashada Friday. Hence, I visited the hill to inspect the arrangements. Directions have been issued to officials to ensure a hassle-free darshan for devotees,' he said.
About the fees charged for paid darshan, Mr. Yaduveer said the issue was discussed with officials and deliberations have taken place to reduce the fee, and a decision would be taken in the coming days.
'All shops on the hills should only organic and chemical-free turmeric and vermillion,' he said.
Mr. Yaduveer said that mobile phones should be banned inside the temple and photographs should be prohibited. 'A decision should be taken in this regard,' he added.
Mr. Yaduveer extended his support to dress code for the Chamundeshwari temple.
'A dress code should be enforced, and I have been supportive of it. We should educate the next generation about our culture, traditions, and customs. People should visit religious places in a manner that respects the sanctity of the space,' he added.
Tiger deaths condemned
Reacting to the recent poisoning of five tigers in the M.M. Hills and the alleged mass killing of monkeys near Bandipur, Mr. Yaduveer said it was condemnable. The Forest Department should take strict actions in this regard, he added.
He said that elected representatives of Chamarajanagar should have raised their voice against such killings, but they had not done that.

Historic Anegundi monuments under threat due to official apathy

Gangavati: Ancient forts, temples and heritage structures dating back to the pre-Vijayanagar and Vijayanagar eras in Anegundi are facing severe damage due to the negligence of the Archaeology Department, local residents have alleged. Anegundi, historically recorded as the original capital of the Vijayanagar Empire before the seat was shifted to Hampi, still houses many remnants of its glorious past. Numerous temples, gateways, mantapas and fort walls stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history — but today they are crumbling due to lack of conservation. One alarming incident has come to light at the Agasi fort gate of Chikkarampura, one of the four historic gateways of Anegundi. Local reports say that mantapas atop the fort have been demolished by encroachers who have illegally built houses inside this protected area. Ironically, this land falls under the jurisdiction of the Forest Department and no legal titles have been issued here, yet illegal construction continues unchecked. Similarly, private individuals are reportedly destroying parts of the ancient Anegundi fort ruins on the left side of the main road connecting Anegundi to Anjanadri and Talwara Ghat, to carry out unauthorized civil works. The Anegundi region and 18 surrounding villages come under the Hampi World Heritage Area Development Authority. As this area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, any construction activity here requires mandatory permission from the authority. However, locals say unauthorized work goes on blatantly while officials look the other way. 'It is unfortunate that the few remaining monuments are also being destroyed. The authorities must wake up and take urgent steps to protect what is left,' demanded local youth leader Devendra R.B. Reacting to the allegations, Shejeshwar, Assistant Director, State Archaeology Museum and Heritage Department, Kamalapur division, said: 'We were not aware of this issue. I will immediately send a team for inspection and personally visit the site within two days.'

Massive plantation drive underway in Anantapur

Anantapur: Withthe vision of achieving 50% green cover across Andhra Pradesh, the State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Konidela Pawan Kalyan has launched the Haritha Andhra Programme. As part of this statewide green initiative, Anantapur district is undertaking a massive plantation drive, especially in light of the recent rainfall received during the onset of monsoon. Anantapur, a drought-prone district with a geographical area of 10,205 sq. km, has a forest cover of just 7.296%, and tree cover with over 30% canopy density accounts for less than 0.1% of the total land area. The district receives an average annual rainfall of 508.2 mm, one of the lowest in the state. However, recent rainfall has exceeded expectations. According to the India Meteorological Department, the district received 105.53 mm in May and 54.73 mm in June, showing a 27.41% excess rainfall between June 1 and July 3 compared to the normal. Capitalizing on the favorable conditions, the district administration, through the Forest Department and in coordination with various departments, has intensified efforts to expand green cover. Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), more than 29 lakh seedlings have been raised during 2024–25. These seedlings are currently being distributed to the public from forest nurseries for plantation in revenue areas, homesteads, farms, roadside avenues, and institutional campuses. The plantation drive is being supported by various stakeholders including government departments, educational institutions, and private organizations. Citizens are being encouraged to participate actively in the programme to build a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. The Forest Department has also made arrangements to facilitate easy access to seedlings and has set up multiple distribution points across the district to ensure smooth implementation of the Haritha Andhra Programme.

Efforts may fail but not prayers, says DKS on his CM ambition

Mysuru: Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar sought blessings at Chamundeshwari temple atop Chamundi Hills and later said that while "efforts may fail, but not prayers", signalling his ambition for the state's top post remains undimmed despite Siddaramaiah reaffirming that he would stay chief minister for a full five-year term. Joined by family on Ashada Friday, widely considered auspicious, Shivakumar offered puja to the deity and underlined his faith in divine intervention. "I prayed to the Goddess for what I want," he told reporters, but refused to discuss his long-rumoured chief ministerial ambitions. "I don't want to discuss anything now. I have not come here to speak about politics. I want good for the state. Mallikarjun Kharge is Congress president; he has given us a message and advice. Abiding by his words, let's all work together," Shivakumar said, stressing the importance of party unity. Asked if he had relinquished his dream of becoming CM, Shivakumar reiterated his reliance on prayer: "Even if attempts fail, prayers to the goddess never fail." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Echoing this tone of solidarity, agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy, who also performed puja at the hilltop temple, said, "No weapon against the unity of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar will succeed. They cannot be divided by any conspiracy and their unity will remain for five years." Cheluvarayaswamy briefly turned to Centre-state relations, urging Union minister HD Kumaraswamy to partner with cabinet colleague Pralhad Joshi to secure outstanding tax dues for Karnataka. "MPs have access to a Rs 5 crore annual fund — far exceeding Kumaraswamy's recently announced Rs 30 lakh grant for an auto stand," he said, while appealing for bigger central assistance. Earlier this week, Shivakumar's brother and former Bangalore Rural MP, DK Suresh said there is still "hope" his brother would become CM. He said that while the CM's post is not vacant now, "hope still exists and will remain tomorrow too" that Shivakumar would be CM.
