I'm a TV critic and this week I'm bingeing a jaw-dropping series

Metro's TV Editor Sabrina Barr reveals her top TV picks for July.
I don't know about you, but at this time of the year, when there are no weekly viewings of Strictly, Bake Off and The Traitors, I'm in a constant need of streaming recommendations.
This month, there are several series launching on Netflix and Disney Plus that I can't wait to binge, including one this week that set tongues wagging when the raunchy trailer dropped.
As a TV critic, I flit between watching shows for work and for enjoyment in my free time – but luckily, most of the time these cross over anyway.
With Lena Dunham's Too Much launching in just a few days, Eric Bana's Untamed coming soon and Sterling K Brown's Washington Black arriving on Disney Plus imminently, there's an abundance of brilliant TV to sink our teeth into this July.
Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter.

Here are my five top choices for the month – I hope you're looking forward to watching them too!

I haven't even seen it yet, but I just have a feeling that Too Much is going to tick all of the boxes for me when it comes out on Netflix this week.
In my eyes, it's a recipe for success – Lena Dunham in charge as the creator, having previously helmed the TV masterpiece that is Girls, a show that I inhaled during my university years.
I don't personally know much about the lead of Too Much, Meg Stalter, but people who've watched her in Hacks have claimed that she's a comedy phenomenon, and I have a feeling that she'll live up to the hype.
And then, the premise of the series – a young American woman called Jess (Meg) trying to find her feet in the UK after moving across the pond (hello Notting Hill, The Holiday, What A Girl Wants and Wild Child).
An archetypal bad boy arrives in the form of Felix (The White Lotus star Will Sharpe), who left viewers gagging (in a good or bad way, you be the judge) when he spit in Jessica's mouth during an intimate moment teased in the trailer.
All 10 episodes are coming out in one go, and I can't wait to devour every minute of it.
Too Much launches on Thursday July 10 on Netflix.
At the first glimpse of Eric Bana in the trailer for Untamed, I realised that it's been an incredibly long time since I've seen him on screen.
He hasn't been inactive by any means, but it blew my mind when I realised that the last role I'd seen him in was as Henry in the 2009 adaptation of The Time Traveller's Wife (a personal favourite of mine).
So, I was beyond excited to see him show up in Untamed as the protagonist Kyle Turner, a special agent who becomes embroiled in the mysterious case of a brutal death discovered in Yosemite National Park.
Despite his recent roles, plenty of people commenting on the trailer on YouTube agreed with me that he deserves more of a spotlight, and is a severely underrated actor.
'Eric Bana is an underrated actor that deserves more credit. He killed it in Troy and Hanna,' one comment from @TheHyena-ru8bz read, while @TheonlyLarssNelson wrote: 'I love Eric Bana, put that man to work more often!'
'You had me at Eric Bana,' @abrarmullan1 added. Well said.
On top of the allure of Eric, he's joined in the cast by cinematic legend Sam Neill, another powerhouse talent.
Untamed launches on Thursday July 17 on Netflix.
When the first season of The Sandman was released three years ago, I was immediately enraptured by the stunning world that was presented on screen in the Netflix epic.
Not only was it visually beautiful, but my mind was left buzzing by the philosophical debates that the series sparked, as well as the gripping portrayals of characters including Dream, Desire and Death.
The release of the second season has been marred by allegations of sexual misconduct levelled against Neil Gaiman, who wrote the comic book on which it was based and was heavily involved in the creation of the TV adaptation.
The voices of the women who have made allegations against the writer – which he denies – are of far greater importance than a TV show.
There is also so much more to The Sandman than Gaiman. Many people behind the scenes brought this TV masterpiece to life, and they deserve recognition for their incredible work.
I'm yet to catch up on the second season, but I've heard that the first part knocks it out of the park yet again, with the final batch of episodes set to drop later this month.
The Sandman season 2 part 1 is available to stream on Netflix, while part 2 launches on Thursday July 24.

Ever since This Is Us left me bawling my eyes out, I'm always immediately drawn to anything starring Sterling K Brown.
So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about his next TV project, Washington Black, an eight-part TV series based on the book of the same name by Esi Edugyan.
Knowing nothing else about the story, I came for Sterling… but after watching the trailer, he is far from the only reason why I can't wait to watch this series when it launches on Disney Plus.
The drama tells the tale of a young boy, George Washington 'Wash' Black (Ernest Kingsley Jr, and Eddie Karanja for the younger version of the character), who has an extraordinary scientific mind and is forced to flee the sugar plantation in Barbados where he was born.
Ernest previously starred in one episode of The Sandman, and two episodes of War of the Worlds – and now, I can't wait to discover his talent in his first lead role.
The trailer for the series currently has six million views on YouTube, with one person called @ResellerGeorge commenting: 'The book is amazing! I'm so glad it's been adapted.'
Another called @lyza69 remarked: 'I know 0 thing about this, but this trailer sold me. It looks like an incredible story full of adventure and emotions!'
Washington Black launches on Wednesday July 23 on Disney Plus.
One of my ultimate comfort watches, I was so relieved to find out that the rest of Abbott Elementary season four was finally being released on Disney Plus this month.
Considering the season wrapped up at the end of April in the US, it's been a long wait!
I first came across the show's mastermind Quinta Brunson when she was producing videos in the heyday of BuzzFeed, and it's been extraordinary to see her rise to become one of TV's most in-demand creators.
Abbott Elementary is named after one of Quinta's elementary school teachers, Joyce Abbott. That level of care and purity of heart at the core of the show is clear when you watch every single episode. More Trending
For anyone yet to check it out, Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary set in a fictional school in West Philadelphia.
The adult members of the cast are all scene stealers, including Tyler James Williams as the reserved but adorable Gregory, Janelle James as the charmingly egotistical headteacher Ava and Sheryl Lee Ralph as the legendary kindergarten teacher Barbara.
However, the children who star as the pupils also steal the show. One particular highlight was when a kid who's dressed as Thanos in the Halloween episode goes wild and dishes out all of the candy early. In a nutshell, it's TV gold.

Near-death experience as a kid meant I had to battle my biggest fear to take part in celeb shark show, says Helen George

SHE'S best known for playing glamorous nurse Trixie Franklin on hit BBC drama Call The Midwife, but fans are about to see a very different side to Helen George. The actress, 41, will battle her deepest dread of putting her head underwater as she takes part in a radical new ITV reality show, Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 4 Helen is best known for playing glamorous nurse Trixie Franklin on hit BBC drama Call The Midwife Credit: BBC Speaking to The Sun on Sunday ahead of the first episode on ITV1 tomorrow night, Helen reveals that she developed the fear, known as aquaphobia, after experiencing a horrendous near-death experience in a swimming pool as a child. Helen said: 'I was terrified of putting my head underwater. I have a real deep-rooted fear. 'I used to love the water when I was really young, but I went to a swimming party when I was six. 'They put those weird Nineties foam mats down. They're massive yoga mats, really. 'I just remember this moment of being stuck underneath one and not being able to get out. There was that fear of being trapped. I finally made my way up to the surface. 'But I remember no one noticing that I'd gone, and no one really believing what I said, because no one had seen it. From then, I got it in my head about not putting my head underwater. 'I have a really strong image of looking up to the top of the swimming pool and the mats were on top and no one knew I was down there.' Helen confronts her fear head-on in the new five-part series, in which celebs plunge into the ocean and learn to swim with man-eating sharks, without a cage, off the island of Bimini in the Bahamas. 'It's not safe' She is thrown in at the deep end with comedian Lenny Henry, Countdown's Rachel Riley, McFly bassist Dougie Poynter, stand-up comic Ross Noble, Amandaland actress Lucy Punch and TV presenter Ade Adepitan. Mum-of-two Helen was spurred to push herself as she realised her kids Wren, seven, and three-year-old Lark were becoming more confident in the water than she was. Call The Midwife actress looks nothing like her character after glam transformation and very sexy dress She also opened up to her property developer boyfriend Dan Innes about her fear, which he had not noticed on their holidays. Helen explained: 'My kids know that I am scared of the water, and my seven-year- old is more confident in the water than I am, and I realised I've got to do something about that as it's not safe. 'I hadn't even told Dan how scared of the water I was, and he was like, 'But you got in the sea on holiday in Cornwall with me. I didn't know you were so scared'.' It's the first reality TV show Helen has been in since BBC's Strictly ten years ago. She is stepping back into the limelight two years after splitting from actor Jack Ashton, the father of her two children, who she met on Call The Midwife when he played Reverend Tom Hereward. Soon after, she grew close to her co-star Olly Rix, who was cast as her businessman husband Matthew Aylward. My kids know that I am scared of the water and my seven-year-old is more confident in the water than I am. I realised I've got to do something about that When the offer to swim with sharks came in, Helen explained that she felt compelled to take part, even if it did leave her feeling exposed. She said: 'I'm an actor, I play other people's vulnerability, so playing my own and being vulnerable on screen without make-up was hard. It's so scary. I play a character known for wearing lots of make-up, and that's her thing — so not having that to hide behind was new. 'There's no hair and make-up. I've not done reality since Strictly, which is obviously a very different beast. So revealing yourself on screen is being vulnerable.' Helen was fortunate that producers at Call The Midwife, where she has worked for 13 years, let her finish filming a week early so she could jet out to the Caribbean last autumn to tackle her fear. Helen said: 'I get asked to do all sorts of things, but no one's ever asked me to do a show with sharks. I realised it was probably never going to happen again. It did sound like an amazing premise for a show, so I couldn't turn it down. 'Hearing how mad an idea it was, I thought I had to do it. 4 The celebrities taking part in new ITV show, from left, Ade, Ross, Helen, Lenny, Lucy, Dougie and Rachel Credit: PA 4 The scary predators will get up close with celebs in new show Credit: Mediadrumimages/KenKieferII 'I had to get some time off from Call The Midwife. They kindly gave me a week off so I could make it out. 'For me, putting my head under- water was the scariest thing I could do, so the idea that sharks would be involved made it even scarier.' Before filming began, Helen confessed she almost pulled out, but she forced herself to conquer her inner critic, revealing: 'I had that feeling you get before a funeral — you know, that something bad is about to happen and you've got to face it. 'I had a few moments before I flew out where I thought, 'Oh my God, am I actually going to do this?'. 'Before our first day filming, I knew that something big was happening, and I didn't know we were going to be cage-diving with sharks on the first day, just to really throw us in at the deep end. 'I did wake that night in a panic thinking, 'What am I doing here?'.' 'I burst into tears' In the first days of the show, Helen struggled so much to immerse herself underwater that bosses almost gave her a separate snorkelling challenge. She said: 'When we were doing the training in the swimming pool, I said to everyone, 'I haven't put my head underwater for 15 to 20 years. I'm really scared of swimming'. 'I hadn't realised how bad it was and I burst into tears. It felt like everyone else was really progressing and I wasn't. So at one point, the producers were going to put me on a junior snorkelling course, instead of the actual deep-sea diving experience. 'And then I thought, 'F**k this, I want to join in with everybody else'. 'It wasn't a big, beautiful moment that I'd imagined, where I saw a beautiful fish and I wanted to swim. 'It was more I felt like I was being left behind and I wouldn't have the same experience as my friends. 'When we were training in the swimming pool, I said to everyone, 'I'm really scared of swimming'. I hadn't realised how bad it was and I burst into tears' 'I had to put my big girl pants on and get on with it, or I was going to miss out on these incredible experiences.' Helen added: 'We kept hearing gossip from the crew that we might swim with dolphins, but I think they were dangling a carrot. We never saw a single dolphin!'

Fans rejoice as beloved Friends actor, 32, makes a surprising comeback

He once starred in one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time but Cole Sprouse, 32, has come a long way from his days on the Friends set. The former child star, who portrayed Ross Geller's son Ben in seven episodes of the beloved series, is now best known for his lead role in Netflix 's Riverdale. But it's another project that has fans rejoicing once again this week. Sprouse's side hustle is running a chaotic, cult-favorite Instagram account called @camera_duels, where he posts candid snaps of fans who try to secretly photograph him in public by snapping a photo of them back. The account became a viral sensation a couple of years ago but in June 2023 Sprouse stopped posting to it. 'It started because I was pissed off,' Cole previously told Wonderland magazine. 'I try to approach a lot of the strange trappings of celebrity and the culture with comedy… the actions and feelings and vibes that people put off when they're about to do something like that is so obvious and comical that it begs a duel.' The account was originally meant to shame people who tried to sneak photos without asking. But it has ironically turned into a bucket list item for fans with many admitting they now try to stage a stealth photo just to be featured. 'That was an oversight on my behalf,' Cole admitted. 'I should have seen that coming!' Now Sprouse is back posting to his Instagram. Last week he shared a rambling yet poetic takedown of a father in a Speedo snapping a photo of him at the beach. The caption included everything from commentary on the surveillance state to the unfortunate visibility of 'a 50+ shivering meatus' behind thin swimwear. Fans couldn't get enough and the post left followers fangirling over him. His account now boasts over 4.6million followers, with each post bombarded with fan messages. Sprouse played Ben for just seven episodes between 2000 and 2002 but suddenly disappeared from Friends without explanation. The real reason was because his character was written out as the show to focus more on Ross' relationship with Rachel and later, their daughter Emma. Still, despite his brief time on the show, the Friends fans have not let go. Fans have speculated that Ross may have lost custody of Ben off-screen, due to his increasingly erratic behavior. Sprouse himself has even joked about the theory, agreeing that Ross 'wasn't the most present father' during a previous GQ interview. In 2015, a Reddit user named D.F. Lovett hypothesized that Cole's character still existed but that Ross lost custody of him. 'Friends was on for ten seasons, but Ben doesn't show up in person after episode 12 of season eight,' the Reddit user posted. The post continued: 'He's only mentioned six times in the remaining 54 episodes after his last appearance. 'People like to give Ross the benefit of the doubt, wondering if perhaps he was a better father off-screen. Perhaps his children met but the audience never saw. 'The more likely answer is that he was such a deadbeat father that he completely faded away from his son's life, pretending to his family and so-called friends that he still saw a boy he barely knew.' Sprouse has also previously shared details of his time on set and admitted he had a major crush on Jennifer Aniston while filming Friends at just eight years old. 'I had a really, really hard time working with Aniston because I was so in love with her', he confessed to the New York Post. 'I was infatuated. I was speechless. I'd get all bubbly and forget my lines and go completely blank. It was difficult.' The role on Friends was Cole's first acting job where he starred without his twin brother, Dylan, because the sitcom didn't require both twins. Sprouse went on to star on Disney's The Suite Life of Zach and Cody with his brother before landing a role as Jughead in Riverdale after graduating from college. Sprouse said fans still regularly recognize him as Ben from Friends. 'Because Friends is on Netflix, there's renewed interest,' he explained in an interview with Marie Claire in 2022. 'People can call me 'Ben' on the street and I will turn around.'

Emmerdale star rules out major fan theory about what's wrong with Bear

Emmerdale star Joshua Richards has ruled out a fan theory concerning his character Bear Wolf. Viewers of the ITV soap have seen the character display a number of worrying behaviour patterns of late. He's lashed out at son Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), and has suffered a number of angry outbursts. His general demeanour just seems a little… off. The rift between father and son has been devastating, so much so that Bear has decided to leave Tenant's Cottage and indeed the village. Planning to visit Ireland, his trip falls through – but still decides to go. But where to? 'I think the dynamic in Tenants Cottage has changed because Mandy has moved in,' Joshua told us. 'Bear's probably thinking, 'Hang on a minute, this is my son trying to get a life together with his new bride and I'm in the way.' 'That's in his mind. I don't think it's in Paddy's or Mandy's minds but it's something he introduces as a sort of ghost at the feast.' Upon his return, he'll be launched into a huge new storyline, with fans already speculating what that might be. Some have questioned whether he could be suffering from a medical condition. 'I think he's too humiliated to go back. It's more than just humiliation, it's the confusion of''Who am I? What's my purpose in life and what do I do?',' he explained. 'To have a revelation at that age – because he's 78 – is a big thing. 'Luckily there's no dementia, but he's like somebody with dementia stumbling off into the countryside, not knowing who they are or where they're going or what their purpose in life is.'
