MDSO releases name of man fatally shot by deputy after chase
Just after 5 p.m., when deputies with the Robbery Intervention Detail attempted to stop a yellow Corvette near NW 66th Street and NW 22nd Avenue due to illegal window tint, the driver, identified as 24-year-old Kristofer Laboy, sped off, according to the sheriff's office.

"The vehicle fled the scene, and with the assistance of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office aviation unit, deputies tracked the Corvette to a dead end near NW 85 Street and NW 4 Court," Sheriff's spokesman Argemis Colome said.
Laboy, who was the only one in the car, then got out. Investigators said he was armed as he approached the deputies' vehicles and that's when Deputy Kelvin Cox shot him.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and declared him dead at the scene.
No deputies were injured during the incident and a Laboy's gun was recovered.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now leading the investigation, which is standard protocol in police shootings.
Cox is a 23–year veteran of law enforcement.

A rep for Dog and Francie told TMZ: "We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident, and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony." Dog - who has 13 children from previous relationships - got together with and Francie in 2020 after they both suffered the loss of a spouse. The TV star lost his wife of 13 years Beth in 2019 after a battle with cancer, while Francie's husband Bob Frane died in 2018. Francie previously told Entertainment Tonight the pair bonded over their shared grief which helped bring them together as a couple. She explained: "We understood the pain that the other one was feeling, and [in] those tough days and moments, we helped each other stand up. "We could cry with each other and talk about what we were feeling. "We were able to walk alongside each other through the pain and heartbreak, and it brought us together in this amazing way." The pair went on to marry in 2021, but Francie insisted they will never forget their lost loved ones. She added: "We're both still grieving. We're never going to leave Bob and Beth behind [or] forget about them. They'll always be a part of us."

Mountain lion bites 4-year-old on popular Olympic National Park trail, injuring child
A mountain lion bit a 4-year-old who was walking with their family over the weekend on a popular trail in Olympic National Park in Washington state, park officials said Monday. The child was injured during Sunday's attack and flown to a trauma center in Seattle for treatment, according to a statement from the National Park Service. The attack by a mountain lion fitted with a tracking collar was near an overlook on Hurricane Ridge, a popular mountain area with expansive views. The attack was reported to rangers around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday and paramedics and park staff traveled to the injured child, according to the National Park Service. Rangers immediately started searching for the cougar and by Monday, park staff had 'dispatched the animal,' the statement said using a term that generally refers to killing an animal. 'There are no current threats to the public,' the statement said. Officials said they would not be releasing any identifying information about the child to protect their identity.

Decatur police chief implements leadership classes for officers
DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — On Monday, Decatur Police Chief Torry Mack began the first in a series of police officer trainings to do what he describes as improving the quality of the department. When Mack was sworn in on June 2, he vowed to restructure the police department, and he said that starts with additional training. Mack brought in national communications specialist Darryl Rivers for the 4-day sessions. Hands Across Decatur extends hours due to heat Rivers had spent his entire adult life as part of the government, including 17 years as a police officer, sergeant and lieutenant. For nearly two years, the Decatur Police Department has been under heavy scrutiny since the police shooting death of Stephen Perkins in September 2023. The department drew more criticism in April with the death of John Scott Jr., who was arrested by police while experiencing an apparent mental health crisis. 'Leadership is not defined with what's on your collar. You could be a born leader, or you can be a leader,' Mack explained. 'Mr. Rivers is going to make a lot of leaders today with his message.' Rivers drilled the police officers on the meaning of earning respect with your ears and then losing that respect with your mouth. 'From time to time, the biggest part of communication is actually listening, and we as human beings don't do that all that well, so we elect to speak before we listen,' Rivers explained. A city-commissioned independent review released in January found Decatur police officers needed more training both on the law and how they interact with the public. Mack said he wants all of his police officers in the department to be trained as leaders in changing the perception of the department. 'This class today is for the sergeants and below or the officers that are aspiring to be sergeants,' said Mack. 'Just to give them a feel of what it takes to be a competent and a professional leader.' Mack added that he is focused on several issues detailed in the review. Rivers told News 19 that his goal for the officers is to believe that they are leaders both in and outside of the department in order to change its public perception. 'Sometimes people feel that the law enforcement community really isn't in tune with the plight of society, so I feel as though one of the main things that law enforcement could do is literally sit back and listen sometimes in order to understand how to best solve problems, issues and situations,' Rivers said.
